Had Marino went to another team, say perhaps the Raiders, with Allen and Jackson at RB, and Long, Alzado, Hendricks, Haynes and Hanes, etc. on D, and just coming off a huge SB win over the 'skins, there would probably be no need for this poll. :)

Marino was good; was he single-handedly good enough to take Raiders teams that did not even make the playoffs from 86-89 to the SB? Or, take the '90s team, sans Bo in the playoffs, to the SB?

Marino had chances with great teams in '90, '92, and '98. Marino's best shot would have been '93, but he tore his achilles tendon.

I would throw Warren Moon and Jim Kelly into the convo..

Kelly had more gifts than any NFL QB could ever ask for; and, Kelly almost single-handedly lost two of those SBs (he had a propensity to throw the ball to the other teams).

Marino was always my favorite. Joe Montana gets the nod...even though I shudder to think of what any of the guys on the list could have done with Jerry Rice.

Marino was drafted in 83. That would have put him on the 84 Raider's team, and it was loaded. Like anyone else I'm just guessing, but I'd say multiple titles. QB was the downfall of the Raiders after Jim Plunkett's time was over. Don't make me mention Marc "I can't throw a dirty towel in the hamper without it getting picked off" Wilson and the host of others who are not worth mentioning.

I am not sure that the 1984 argument helps, since the Dolphins went to the Super Bowl that year and lost to one of the most dominant teams in NFL history.

That's your opinion. And also the opinion of a Chef's fan, also. :)

Marino was very good, he just played on some poor teams. I say he would not only have made the Raiders a better team, but the same is true of many other NFL teams.

Ask yourself this, how would the Dolphins fared without Marino? Shula may have retired a lot earlier.

I would have loved to have had Marino in KC. I said earlier that I think he is the second best, and the only reason I give Elway the edge is because Elway consistently derailed my Chiefs.

I just do not know that Marino would have won a SB with the Raiders; technically, nobody should ever win a SB with the Raiders.

Nobody should ever win a SB with the Raiders? If that were so and the Raiders had no SB wins, then they would still only have one less SB win than the Chiefs.

As we know, the Raiders have three Lombardi trophies. But I don't look for them or the Chiefs to add any more Lombardi trophies to their trophy cases any time in the near future.

Besides all that, I think a lot of QBs have "derailed" the Chiefs. :)

What impressed me about Marino is his knees were shot most of his career. He had very little mobility. So he stayed in the pocket and took the punishment.

Marino's dolphins were the only team to beat the Bears. And one of the Bear players said that was because Marino was a better roll out passer than they expected. But he did get rid of the ball fast, the best I've seen at that.

I like Elway, and he had all the physical tools, but I doubt he'd be getting this many votes if he didn't win an SB. I don't think you can argue that Elway was the best player on those championship teams. I'll never be able to understand why SBs are weighted so heavily in QB evaluations.

BTW, Elway only threw 20 TDs 6 times (career max = 27). Career 57% passer.

Well, part of it is also that he led/carried his team to 3 other super bowls (in a period of 4 years) before those last 2 (those last ones possibly being the only ones some newer fans migh remember him for)

I think a lot of times (minus the more casual fan's opinions) he more or less weighed by a combination of both sections

Good points.

Jim Kelly really gets less love than he probably deserves

....though, when talking about Moon, are we referencing just his NFL career or his entire professional career?

I think with Moon you have to use his entire professional career

Here's a question. If you ran an NFL team and you could pick any of the above mentioned QBs to be your Quarterback, who would you pick? I'm talking about you picking them now, but the QBs being at the age that they were drafted. I think I'd take Manning.

While I think Marino's release was the quickest ever, I think Peyton's knowledge of the game and work ethic makes the difference to me.
