Pons declares for draft

I've been saying since January that he needs to go pro.

1. He has arthritis.

2. He will not get as much playing time next season, and will definitely not be a top three option.

3. The draft, hypothetically, should be stronger after next season.

4. He is not going to grow three inches, which is his biggest hindrance.

He hit 44.6 percent of his uncontested jump shots this season. His shot release is not getting any quicker, his defensive awareness is not going to get any better and he will not be asked to take the ball off of the dribble any if he stays. Staying a year does nothing other than adding a year of wear and tear on his joints. He will go late second to undrafted, either way.
What can/will get better is his ball handling and his improvement for ht e behind the three point line. He needs to expand his game in both of these areas. I think our coaching staff can do both which improve his draft status next year.

I think he could be our second best player next year and get all the minutes he wants.

No disrespect to Pons but he isn't a 1st or 2nd rounder. Let's all be honest. He really grew and matured and improved last season, but he has a long way to go. Absolutely test the waters. I would be very shocked if he isn't back for another season.......

Pons is the perfect example of another season of the type of coaching Barnes provides to further develop as a player. He's still extremely raw in lots of areas.....

If it's for the purpose of evaluation, it's a smart move on his part. While his athleticism is pro-ready, his game is not. I believe his ceiling could be a Shawn Marion type impact on the league.

I agree this staff is good at developing strengths, but I just see no role roll for Pons next season.

I hope. He plays great as a small ball four. He would really excel if he had another rim protector around him . He gambles a lot and Fulkerson isn't the type of height that it coordinates well with.

"Yves is not hiring an agent and talking to some people on the UT side, he is expected back but is gathering information. Like I said in the War Room never say never but in conversations I’ve had about it Tennessee seems confident he will return." Rob Lewis - Volquest

I’m sure they will tell him to work on his ball handling, passing, and his shot a lil more.

I definitely think he can improve his draft stock, suggesting that’s not a possibility seems a bit crazy.

Define improving his stock?
where do you see him now and how high can he go ?

Keep in mind this might be the worst possible time in history to improve your skills in any sports.

I see him a second rounder this draft and the same next year. Not enough difference in going from the back of the 2nd round to the front of it to give up a years worth of salary imo

What if he’s told he’s a Second rounder this year?

Why come back and lose a years salary and still be a second rounder ?

Because most of VolNation doesn’t know how the NBA views players.

They think that players getting an extra in college is a good thing when it’s the exact opposite. The older you are the worse it is for you.

Barnes is bring in two top 40 guard players, Vescovi is coming back, and Walker can handle the ball a little bit. You think Rick Barnes is going to let Yves handle the ball more? Give him more opportunities to make plays and create?

It is ludicrous.

Well Grant, Admiral and Bone are all recent examples of guys getting drafted higher than they would’ve had they left a year earlier.

I think he’s likely very late 2nd to undrafted right now, I think he could be late 1st/early 2nd with another good year.

And two of those guys left as juniors. Bone wasn’t an NBA prospect at all after his sophomore year. Pons is a legit prospect who could drafted. Grant also went from sophomore to junior year. If Pons was a sophomore there would be a better argument.

He might but he is more likely not too. Besides he can get better development in the G-League.
He can also get passed over pretty easily in the G-league and “forgotten” about...so should Fulk leave now too? What’s his benefit to coming back?

I don’t think he has to handle the ball “more” to improve his stock...continuing to improve his shooting, being more effective when given the chances to handle the ball, and continuing to show elite on the defensive end will be enough to improve his stock.

They all still got a year older, no? How many mocks do you know of that have Pons has a mid-2nd rounder or better?

Fulk’s not an NBA prospect. If he had Pons’ type of skills and was getting mocked in some big boards then absolutely.

And yet he’s an NBA draft pick? That is ludicrous
