Pons declares for draft

Well I also follow my alma mater Saint Louis U hoops team and they have two Jr. players getting NBA evaluations (Jordan Goodwin and Hasahn French). They have zero chance of getting drafted by any NBA team. I feel the same way about Yves Pons. Thought I'd share the list of ranked prospects (hope it posts on this thread) Pons like Goodwin and French doesn't even make the Top 100 players. Does he wish to leave UT and play in Europe?

2020 aggregate NBA mock draft 5.0: International prospects are rising

I am no expert, thought Williams would come back, but unless the NBA has gone downhill they still need players who can play both offense and defense. Defensively strong but small and I don't see him scoring many points in the NBA. Needs more work but maybe he plans to play pro ball in France or other countries if no NBA contract.

So a guys 3pt% decreasing by nearly 10% over 2 years with the same number of shot attempts is somehow seen as a positive? Interesting spin you did there, somehow if Pons 3pt percentage drops at all next year I doubt you would spin it as a positive. Pons shot 42% on catch and shoot 3’s, which is exactly what the NBA is looking at right now, he’s not going to be a guy any team is looking at to be an offensive weapon. Thybulle sure wasn’t asked to be a main offensive weapon this year, he’s asked to be a knock down shooter and an elite defender, something Pons as a junior is already being acknowledged as. Maybe 1-1 he’s not the elite perimeter defender, but Thybulle also doesn’t have the same versatile as a defender as Pons does either. I’ve already acknowledged Pons needs to improve, but if he does that even marginally on the offensive end, say...38% overall from 3, and 45%+ on open 3’s, 75%+ from the free throw line while maintaining his 2pt% and defensive play then I definitely could see him sneaking into the back end of the first round.

All of those are very doable things, especially considering he’s improved on most of those already each year...I don’t think he needs to drastically improve his ball handling, play making abilities, show he can come off screens, develop his dribble drive, continue to improve his shooting and also become an elite 1-1 defender...again he does all that at his size and his elite athleticism and you are talking a Top 15 pick.

Care to show me where I said his 3 pt % decreasing was a positive? I never even mentioned that, but I did mention that he has a season that he has shot 40% from 3 which NBA scouts will look at and believe it can be duplicated. I know you are grasping at straws to appear like you know what you're talking about, but don't put words in my mouth that I never said.

You asked for advanced metrics that showed pretty substantial growth. I supplied it, and you just make up your own argument to disagree with that. Pretty impressive stuff.

I already acknowledged that Pons needs to shoot a higher clip from 3 and speed up his shot up. You seem to agree. Per your last paragraph though, he would have to improve immensely on the bulk of the other things to be a lottery pick. I don't think that is doable for any player at this stage of their development, so this lottery pick nonsense you keep throwing out is really irrelevant. The 2021 NBA draft is also considered a talented and deep draft, which makes the chances of Pons being a first rounder even worse. His offensive game is going to have to develop in a big way to be a first rounder. He would be a major liability on the offensive end right now and those guys don't get taken in the first round.

3 seniors went in the first round last year. Thybulle and 2 others. Those other 2 had a career 3pt% of 40% or more, which is why I've emphasized the 40% number. That's what the NBA scouts want to see.

Look at Josh Richardson. He was a significantly better offensive player with the ability to play the most important position in the NBA currently, was a very good perimeter defender with good to great athleticism and he was a mid 2nd rounder. I don't think Pons can improve on all that he needs to be considered a first round pick this time next year. You can throw out the perfect scenario of him improving on everything, but that isn't realistic. We might as well just have the ole "if the Queen had balls..." discussion instead.

A better Comp for Yves is Andre Roberson. He also played the 4 in college, yet has pretty much exclusively played the 2 or 3 in the NBA. He's considered to be an elite and versatile defender, but offensively he's been pretty garbage in the NBA, yet still gets plenty of playing time. I think he has a little bit better handle than Pons does, which allows him to play more on the wing, but the reality is he sits in the corner and waits for a pass to come to him.

I view Pons as a 3 at the next level because of his size. I'm sure he could play as an undersized 4 as well. I think he can effectively guard 1-4, and could guard small ball centers as well. Same as Roberson, who was a first rounder himself.

I've been saying since January that he needs to go pro.

1. He has arthritis.

2. He will not get as much playing time next season, and will definitely not be a top three option.

3. The draft, hypothetically, should be stronger after next season.

4. He is not going to grow three inches, which is his biggest hindrance.

He hit 44.6 percent of his uncontested jump shots this season. His shot release is not getting any quicker, his defensive awareness is not going to get any better and he will not be asked to take the ball off of the dribble any if he stays. Staying a year does nothing other than adding a year of wear and tear on his joints. He will go late second to undrafted, either way.
He’s going to get plenty of playing time. He’s our best defender on the team! His shot improved, and is the farthest thing from a liability on offense.
The incoming class will be good, but Pons has real experience in SEC games.

Maybe he didn't make the list because it was made 3 weeks before he declared.

Bottom line is Pons has an NBA body. It's not just that he has an NBA body, it's that he has the perfect NBA body for the modern game. They're looking for switchable defenders and you can put him on anybody in the league, positions 2-4. He's going to get drafted regardless of how unpolished his offensive game is.

Dennis Rodman never looked to score any points but knew he could impact every game with his energy, lockdown defense and rebounding ability.

Anosike can push Pons to be a better rebounder next season and Pons can work on his mid range shot which will help him greatly at the NBA or G League level.

Pons is nowhere close to as talented as Rodman. I understand what you are saying but Pons isn't close to Rodman defensively or rebounding. Their only similarities are how poorly they dribble.

An article on Rivals basketball recruiting homepage lists a top ten list of 2020 recruits who were not in the Rivals150 rankings. Malachi Wideman comes in at number ten. Maybe he can come in after football (assuming we have a football season) and help replace/supplement Pons production.

Sorry, I thought I was linking the one article and instead got the whole Rivals home page, it seems.
