Jenkins leaving sucks. He was a good rotation guy and getting better each year.
Wasn't he a project coming out of HS? Very lightly recruited?
Sucks to have a project player that we take a chance on, CRG coaches him up and turns him into a SEC player, then we lose him. What college football should do is start instituting transfer fees like professional soccer. In this instance, we take a chance on player no one wants, develop him and he leaves. The receiving institution should pay UT a fee for the rise in value. We made this kid some money and are adding value to the team that accepts him. It's what happens with every single "transfer" in soccer across the world-no matter what country or league. The receiving club plays the club that loses the player. Has nothing to do with player salary-that is a separate negotiation. There is no collective bargaining agreement that can extend across all leagues and countries with the different labor laws, so this is one of the ways around it. It's horse trading. This is similar, it's just that UT is getting nothing in return. Would be nice to pocket a few NIL bucks for our program as a reward for teaching this kid how to play football.

They aren't employees of the school.

There are all kinds of list. Spyre is generally in the top 2-3 in them. We certainly aren’t 15.
Spyre has always been said to be top 2-3.
But the Football Vols are always down near the 15 ranking it seems.

so my Question is, Why?
Spending on other sports taking more at UT than other places?
Heupel to picky and on bargains?

I'm not trying to be hyperbolic but the way I see it is big question marks at the following positions:

On offense:

WR- lose a lot and what we had was honestly mediocre, but if the young guys couldn't earn reps.......
Interior O line- break in new center and we lose a guard too don't we?
Tackles- our tackles were not good at all this year. Get one back break in another......
RB -not as worried about this one as I think our scheme makes things easier for our backs..... But still unproven and durability are a concern

On defense:

Safety- big concern
Linebacker- we have some talent but no depth
Edge- we feasted last year against some inferior opponents but they disappeared against teams with decent lines...... Not sure this is the strength everyone thought it was. Lose our best guy.

That's a lot of question marks and unknowns, hopefully young recruits step up to him the void but that typically means a curve in season.

With the portal and NIL we're in the same boat is every other team though.

As of today

Florida has 15 in the portal only 4 incoming
Bama has 14 in the portal only 5 incoming
Georgia has 9 in the portal with 0 incoming and they're still in the playoffs
LSU has 17 in the portal and 13 incoming
Auburn with 15 in portal and 14 incoming

Most the teams trying to get better are losing players and have question marks and unknowns everywhere. But I'd rather be where we are than where Auburn, haven't won 10 games since 2017 or Florida, haven't won 10 games since 2019 are.

We are all just more critical because of how bad the final game played out and how close we seem to be to being really good.

Who are the 14 teams ahead of the Vols?

Now of those 14 teams how many have a baseball and softball program that recruits and competes every year to make the world series? How many have a men's basketball program competing for conference titles every year and Sweet Sixteen runs? Our ladies basketball program, despite lack of results is one of the top 5 brands still even KJH was pulling in big time portal players. Some of these other schools are really only having to feed 2 or 3 sports from their NIL collective.

I don't disagree but we have to get, develop and retain better players.......I did something today I don't usually do, I went down the list of the top 100 players, this cycle and next year's crop. And it became abundantly clear why we aren't able to break through. Lots of GA, Alabama, Oh St, Texas LSU and FL, Miami etc........ And not enough Vols.

We just have to get better, and it's going to take time, but how much time do you have? Narratives shift over time, those in players ears make observations and make it more difficult to land the types of guys that can change a teams trajectory.

You have to be selective, but you have to shoot your shots too. All I can really do is hope that's what we are doing

Bottom line is we were much closer to Indiana this year than we were OhSt........

Yeah, agree. Not saying it can be done today. I'm no labor lawyer and I'm sure there are court cases all over the country that will determine what and how any structure can be applied to the transfer portal and NIL (if it ever becomes possible). Just saying that structure could be achieved under a CBA, but to your point, they would need to employees as well. I won't pretend to know how all this has be contained. But I'm just looking at the end result and asking if it can be reverse-engineered. The international soccer market seems most akin to what is happening now, or how this is evolving. My question for the attorneys would be how do we get there?

Jenkins to the portal puts us at 82 scholarships. I’m including Moe in that. Also including Eason, Karic, and Bailey. My guess for portal additions:

1 more OL
1 WR
1 DT
1 Safety

That puts us at 87. If Kitselman returns due to the JUCO lawsuit, that’s 88.

We would need to lose 5, although I suspect if Kitselman returns, Staes bolts, so that would be a wash. Would need to lose 4 more to avoid being over the limit.

Give me an elite ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT over just football any day of the week. Pay enough to be championship contenders in every major sport (see bball and baseball) along with a contending football team and I’m happy. Sure as hell wouldn’t want to be Georgia, who is really only relevant in one damn sport.
Football is the driver that brings in the revenue that pays those players though. What is a contending football team?

My fear is in looking back this season we had a fairly favorable SEC schedule the way it worked out. Won't break your way every year. We thought at the beginning of the season Mizzou had a cakewalk.

need to get away from the bigger not so fast receivers because you can only run so many wide receiver screens. Get receivers that can get down the field. we have zero mid range 15 to 20 yard for our receivers now can not get clear in the time frame for line to hold up. Plus no backs or te over the middle

I don't recall any of our receivers making people miss or taking it all the way from any distance. Saw a few deep throws, but we are NOT explosive at WR. Been saying it since the middle of the year and haven't seen anything to convince me otherwise.

They did have a cakewalk. They just sucked lol

That's literally all Thornton did. He housed several slants or go routes. However, our WRs are one of the worst groups in the nation at drops and generating separation so we either need a better WR coach, better WRs...or both.

That's a fairy tale that keeps being told, but simply isn't true. Statistically, he wasn't far off last year, and he drew all kinds of extra attention which allowed others to get after the QB.
Indeed.

Anybody who can watch the game can see that. And he played through a left shoulder injury last several games.
