'25 Portal Thread

You weren't attacked. You were called out (probably more patiently than your argument has deserved).

And speaking of "logical", your first and last paragraphs are little more than appeals to authority, as opposed to dealing with the logic-defeaters that you've ignored. You are ignoring arguments in favor of veiled comments by people who may or may not know what is going on, but we KNOW that their jobs and paychecks depend on clicks/listens--i.e. the entire industry you're basing your anxieties on is an industry that makes its money on hyping and manipulating emotions to get those clicks/listens.

So, let me clarify where we're at...

You asked the "innocent" question: If we can't retain our guys, how can we expect to get other teams' guys?"

Several of us answered with very good and valid arguments as to why we should expect to. You ignored them. No one has guaranteed that we will. But we've given good reasons not to get wrapped too tightly around that axle until given more reason to assume your logic.

As example... My son watched the movie "Twister" when he was 5 or so years old. He was horribly afraid of rain and storms for a couple of years. Every time the sky darkened, or the weatherman predicted a storm, he ran in crying that the house may blow away.

Well, I guess it may, but I've lived through enough storms not to ask every time, "Why shouldn't I assume it'll blow the house away?"

That's where we're at here. You've asked why we shouldn't assume the house isn't going to be blown away. We've told you why. Now, you're reduced to ignoring common sense and recent history in favor of "weathermen".

You are just talking in circles.

For clarification: I did pose the question if we can’t talk our own guy into staying (Matthews), how are we gonna talk the top guys in the portal into coming, and I offered up comments made by Swain, Foster, as well as other circumstances that seem to indicate red flags in the WR and that support the validity of that question.

The “several of us” are you and one other guy that jumped in on that question as illogical handwringing and got maybe a couple of likes.

And the only “very good and valid arguments” you have made against the validity of my question is that it is illogical handwringing because what worked in the DB room last year will work this year. Other than that, please offer up what other points you’ve made that invalidate my original question.

My very first response to you. Go do your own work if you want to stop ignoring it.

But hey, maybe the house will land on a wicked witch, we'll meet a tin man, a lion, and a strawman... Oh... Strawman... Sounds like you already know him.

But like I said early one... You do you.

Still waiting on them “very good and valid” arguments you made as to why that was illogical handwringing and not a valid question, all things considered.

Matthews is a former 5 star (assuming he comes back)

Staley was a top 100 recruit.

Ethan Davis was a 4 star TE

In this incoming class we have two 4 star WRs and two 4 star TEs.

We also brought in Brazzell last year who was a well regarded portal transfer.

Reportedly we are also going all in for Branch, who is the # 2 rated portal WR and a former top 10 overall recruit (the top WR recruit in Nico's class).

The notion that we don't invest in weapons for Nico is not grounded in reality.
No its just UF invested in hypersonic missiles,
And we invest in Vietnam surplus

If you listen to Swain Event, may want to turn it on. He’s going in depth on the needs of change, development, and recruiting. Pretty informative details he’s sharing.
Damn NegaVol, spewing all that negativity!! Doesn’t he realize we were a dumpster fire and now we’re a playoff team. Why change what’s working?

is that how it is done? I’ve been accused of being too negative, I’m trying to change.

Man, we had receivers running wide open all year, and were among the elite in rushing O.

It's not philosophy. It's execution. If Nico can deliver on time and accurately and the receivers can catch the ball...
It’s not that simple.

If you’ve got WR’s running 15-20 yard routes in 5 seconds and then getting open,
And a OL that can block for 1-2 seconds

Which is what happened much of the time,

Then the offense needs to be tweaked.
You can’t execute under the circumstances.

Offensive line was actually better this year than '22.

The game has changed since '22 and the way defenses play us uas changed too and we haven't adjusted well enough in the passing game.

I will relay this, but take with a grain of salt as I am, ADMITTEDLY, just a normal dude from Knoxville, born and raised.

I work with a couple of guys who are very tight with some bigger name donors to the University who are big time business names in town. They related information to my colleague a couple of days ago that Miami did INFORMALLY reach out via “back channels” to Nico via the Mauigoa family. It was apparently more of a Mauigoa family reaching out to the Iamaleava family to express “hey it would be awesome to have our kids play together and Francis could be Nico’s blindside”. It was not official Miami officials or coaches but there was dialogue.

I know nothing other than that but take it with a grain as I’m once removed from actual source but I did reach text messages on the phone between colleague and big name donor
This sounds both possible and probable.

Good G*d. Just go away. You agree with points while ignoring points, and then decide we need to repeat them for the 20th time.

***********************

You asked about losing a position group. Happened last year and it was a benefit. No reason to panic.

Yah. I know. But that was different.

How?

..... Crickets .....

But what about Nico thinking about leaving?

He's staying.

But he thought about leaving b/c of WR room concerns.

(You know that as fact?) But nonetheless... He's staying. Does your logic mean that there is no more reason for concern about the WR room?

... Crickets ...

But the media!

Appeals to authority aren't support for the validity of the argument.

Yah... Well you still haven't given logical reasons not to panick.

Geez, man. I've wasted enough time on you. Sorry.

************************

I'll end with this. Again, you do you.

Bye.

It would be ironic to lose the most promising young receiver you have when moving toward a youth movement at his position........... The situations are very different.
Maybe the talk of him being problematic is true.
And if Heup really likes Staley and the Freshmen then using Mm money on a top veteran Wr or 2 wouldn’t be terrible.

I don’t know. We’ll see I guess

That’s debatable. At times they were pretty good and at times terrible.

But you see a lot of times Nico had a second to make a decision and a second to throw.

You’re right, we didn’t adjust and that was a problem.
