There hasn't been a freshman wr that has been productive because the system is complicated. The WR have to know what routes to run based on coverages. That's why freshmen wr don't play slot.
Maybe he didn’t do it to exert pressure but the timing of when he requested paperwork was about as late as possible. There was no way losing a talent like MM would have been easy regardless but the timing of it was terrible. Any decent options at wr that were in the portal were already gone. More/better talent may enter the portal. His reasons for requesting paperwork had to do with Nico supposedly; Nico isn’t leaving, never entered the portal/nothing.Just curious, but how do you know how it’s been handled? Are you privy to behind the scenes actions, you know, what really is going on? Surely you know better than rely on public info to make your judgements?
Stuff like this happens a lot. We do it too thru players and families.I will relay this, but take with a grain of salt as I am, ADMITTEDLY, just a normal dude from Knoxville, born and raised.
I work with a couple of guys who are very tight with some bigger name donors to the University who are big time business names in town. They relayed information to my colleague a couple of days ago that Miami did INFORMALLY reach out via “back channels” to Nico via the Mauigoa family. It was apparently more of a Mauigoa family reaching out to the Iamaleava family to express “hey it would be awesome to have our kids play together and Francis could be Nico’s blindside”. It was not official Miami officials or coaches but there was dialogue.
I know nothing other than that but take it with a grain as I’m once removed from actual source but I did read the text messages on the phone between colleague and big name donor
You want me to go away when you are the one that called out my valid question as illogical handwringing and a “crazy, short-sighted take.” Ok.
The DB situation last year actually left some meat on the bone. We are now down to 2 returning WR and 3 incoming freshmen. Just because that worked last year for DB’s, doesn’t make my question about this year’s WR situation illogical.
I am thrilled Nico seemed satisfied enough to stay. That is not the point. The fact that it has been reported by reputable sources that he and his family were concerned enough about the OL and WR positions to even meet with Huepel and co lends validity to my OG question. It has also been reported that this meeting contributed to Matthews entering the portal.
You are really just trying to sound smart and get the last word in with the “appeals to authority…” bit, while overthinking the whole thing in the process. It’s not that deep. The point there is that a guy like Swain (who has more football knowledge than you and I and a hundred other posters on this board combined) is questioning the WR situation, and that lends validity to my OG question. Ramon Foster said NFL ppl are also questioning him about our WR development, also supporting the validity of my OG question.
Not sure what points I have ignored. But I do agree with certain points because I believe in Huepel and hope he does what it takes to fix the WR room. However, there are logical concerns. I think the whole situation has put Huepel in a tough spot, and I do not envy him.
I thought I had been pretty clear all along, but maybe not. Should you still feel that my original question was illogical handwringing, I hope the summary above helps. However, I imagine you might still attempt to rebut with anecdotal evidence about the movie Twister and word salad like “appeals to authority,” etc.
he said it hadnt happened.AP reported that the MM 48 hour clock didn't start until the staff was able to show MM an informational video about entering the portal. None of us know when that happened. Probably wasn't Sunday night. So AP said we may not get a YES/NO from MM until later in the week due to the holiday.
Also, it would make the most sense for MM to wait until the last minute before declaring one way or the other. The longer he waits, the more offers he could receive via back channels. So IMO he will wait until the staff tells him the 48 hours is up and they have to enter him in the portal. At that point he will declare one way or the other.
What I’ve heard from an agent friend:Unknown. This is what we know.
1. He is not in the portal
2. His Instagram still has TN stuff on it
3. He is negotiating with TN
AP alluded to the WR/Pope issues being a source of that room clearing. His comment was basically, Who likes their position coach when they can't break the starting lineup? What I’ve heard from an agent friend:
- MM got bumped from $500k to $800k
- The receivers did not like Pope, leading to some of the transfer attrition
- Pope is out
- MM will return
That’s all I’ve heard
The portal ended Dec 28,so he had to submit it to the school by then. UT is on the clock, or the clock has expired.Thought it was 48hrs from when he submits good paper work. If so, the clock hasn’t even started yet
Again, the fact Nico is staying is not the point. The fact that QB1 and fam were so concerned they had to have a meeting is the point. If QB1 is concerned, is it so crazy or illogical for a casual fan to be concerned.So.., Again... If part of your argument about WRs being a concern was Nico's supposed contemplation of leaving b/c of it, why is he staying? To stay consistent in your logic, that should tell you that WR is no longer a concern for him?
(You quoted Ramone as source for your concerns, and he just literally said there was never nerves about that -- :30 mark below
You asked how we can expect to get replacements if we see large #s of our recruits leaving, when we got replacements after large numbers left last year. That's like asking how we can expect the sun to come out after a rain storm, while the sun is shining after the last rain storm.
Since Ramone is your only argument, watch the video.
I don’t think anybody’s concerns about the WR room will truly be answered until the fall. And trying to act like anything in that video answers anyone’s concerns about the WR room is pretzel logic. He's literally asking AP what the state of the portal is, which is kind of indicative that he doesn't know as much as you assume he does. AP's answers basically parrot what I've heard from him, and the rest of that crew: "It's a new world. No need to panic right now. We just need to wait and see how it works out, and it worked out when the same thing happened last year with the secondary."
Quote: "We don't know if MM is leaving, and even if he does we'll just hit the portal harder for receiver."Doesn't sound like he's questioning whether the staff can get transfers, just because we're losing transfers.
And for the record... Again... Stop acting like your concerns haven't been answered when they have been repeatedly. That's the source of the "go away" comment. It reads as debating in very bad faith.
1. So, AGAIN! Consistent logic should be that, if NICO was enough to CAUSE concerns, his staying should alleviate them. In that, he must have heard something that caused him to stay. THAT is the point, and you consistently ignore it. Hell, I would argue that the reports of his concerns, if true... His staying should ALLAY those initial concerns.Again, the fact Nico is staying is not the point. The fact that QB1 and fam were so concerned they had to have a meeting is the point. If QB1 is concerned, is it so crazy is it so crazy or illogical for a casual fan to be concerned.
Talking about ignoring points. First off, Ramone wasn’t my only argument. Secondly, here clearly said in that clip that NFL ppl had expressed concerns. I watched the video, and there wasn’t a whole lot said to ease my concerns about the WR room other than to say they will be trying to get multiple guys in the portal.

I hope Huepel fixes this. I really do. I think he has done an amazing job, and if he can fix the WR situation, he will have done an amazing job at that. However, pretending that concerns about the WR room are crazy, short-sighted, illogical, etc is nothing short of whistling past the graveyard. Worse, it’s gaslighting to win an argument. How anyone can look at what I laid out in the previous post and not admit that there are concerns about the WR situation blows my mind until you consider that it would mean conceding an argument.
Believe me man, I am far from the only one with unanswered questions. It’s not crazy, short-sighted, or illogical to be concerned.
My thing is if we can’t convince one or our own to stay, how we gonna convince top guys in the portal to get on board?

I'm confused as to why you think a transfer WR will contribute year 1. There hasn't been 1 transfer or freshman WR to contribute in their 1st year. I think yall are setting yourselves up for disappointment. Unless CJH tweaks the offensive router audibles.Bring me the USC Wr coach with Branch and JaKobi Lane
