Tinfoil hat time, with @TN-POSSUM:So WR room which we all agreed was one of the weakest groups.
Returning:
Staley - FR
Brazzell - RS-SO
Boo Carter - FR
Lots of other walk-ons it looks like, not sure if any are on scholarship
Incoming: (stars from 247)
Travis Smith Jr., 4 star
Radarious Jackson, 4 star
Joakim Dodson, 3 star
Speculation a bit on my part, but wouldn't surprise me to see us use a TE more as a 4th WR option. We have 2 really good ones recruited that are "traditional" TE bodies (6'4"+, 230lbs) and Miles gets another year we'll also return Cole Harrison & Ethan Davis
It is very possible that MM had some important things to work on that kept him from more playing time. If so, the staff would have constructively shared this. If this was true, and if it's true as has been reported that MM is resentful for lack of playing time, it could indicate a bit of an un-coachable attitude.Personally, I dont see adding a player who caught 10 passes over the course of 13 games improves the wide receiver room. I get it Everyone loves the 5-star prospects. There is some reason he did not play more snaps than he did especially with the lack of production, injuries etc. I tend to think Tennessee is adding a receiver through the portal. Likely Tennessee learned a lesson from whatever went sideways with Thompson's deal and they are trying to avoid that happening again
I taught HS for 6 years and now work with them on another level not in the classroom. That’s exactly why I don’t get heated when kids (yes they’re still kids) pull these types of stunts. It sucks and I hate it, but I’m not gonna hate on the kid because they either don’t have the support group to give them good advice, or they do and the advice they’re getting isn’t in their best interests. Either way, they’re going to make dumb decisions and it’s my hope the adults in the room have a plan for when that happens.Tinfoil hat time, with @TN-POSSUM:
Like the rest of you, I was excited last season when Bru announced he was coming back. In hindsight, I think Matthews probably was expecting that was "his spot" when he originally committed and Bru's extra year put MM off/behind. I'm also starting to think the lack of MM's playing time and him possibly leaving, have something in common with Bru's extra year. I don't know what he was told when he committed but (if true) that would rub me the wrong way. He was a legit 5 star coming out of HS and probably expected to play. It didn't make sense for him to sit when lesser receivers were the 1st ones off the bench. Maybe his attitude was bad because of what happened during the Spring over McCoy. Like I said, it's a "tinfoil" theory but kids are kids.
I don't care how grown up they look or sound, they're still young. I've got 2 sons, 20 and 17 yrs old, and they're moody/emotional just like other kids that age. Giving a good high school player a lot money doesn't make them mature. Maturity comes from experience, trials, and earning your way through life. You throw in agents instead of role models and you get the current state of NIL
He was overrated anyway. No way Pope and Heupel would've played Nimrod and Squirrel over Mike if they weren't better players (maybe if I say that enough it will be true).
In the next couple days ,No offense to dascoop, but saying something as incredibly vague as “Our WR room just got better” positions him to almost never be wrong with that statement. I’m not saying he is wrong, but without a timeline, a name, or really anything more concrete he could just circle back days later and say “This is who I was talking about”.
A lot of things have happened in the background in the last two days with agents involved but I do know MM hasn’t told the staff he’s leaving yet.
We do have a very high NIL number out to him that he’s evaluating along with promises of more playing time and offensive adjustments.
True. But also...No offense to dascoop, but saying something as incredibly vague as “Our WR room just got better” positions him to almost never be wrong with that statement. Waiting for the coaching staff to show MM this:A lot of things have happened in the background in the last two days with agents involved but I do know MM hasn’t told the staff he’s leaving yet.

You mean when the staff gave the entire secondary walking papers and replaced them?Very doubtful. The coaches are simply too loyal to the upperclassmen. You can see how that played out with the secondary after last years departures. They should have played the more talented Matthews as soon as he healed up.
I doubt that we would still be asking if he’s staying or going. It is very possible that MM had some important things to work on that kept him from more playing time. If so, the staff would have constructively shared this. If this was true, and if it's true as has been reported that MM is resentful for lack of playing time, it could indicate a bit of an un-coachable attitude.
Not saying any of this is correct.
