'25 Portal Thread

I’m not “unhappy” about it. It just doesn’t move the needle. Outside of Brazzell, we are basically losing all of our production at the WR spot and the brightest talent we had in the next man up category (MM). It’s hard to get excited about portal pick ups of a player who has zero track record to know if he’ll actually produce or not.
Jefferson was in the same recruiting class as MM and is also a bright young talent. We all wanted him badly out of high school, just like we wanted Matthews.

In short, we were excited about Matthews because of what he did in high school, not what he did as a freshman (basically nothing). And yet, we were excited about the possibility of Jefferson out of high school…but now we’re not because he didn’t do anything as a freshman. That’s weird.

You are acting like Jefferson is some kind of stud at Bama who tore it up. If he wants to come here I hope he does tear it up. But Jefferson isn’t some kind of wow type of player out of the portal.
So is MM a big pickup for another team? They both have one year of college ball and neither made a difference in the W-L column. Jefferson wants to be here and MM is on the fence. There probably is some hurt feelings in this whole situation and I want MM here but he can’t help unless he is 100% here for the right reasons.

Outside of MM (also unproven), Jefferson has way more upside than any other receiver we lost to the portal.

If this is the least exciting receiver pick up I think we are going to be just fine. I trust this staff and think much like the secondary this year, you are going to see a much more talented and athletic unit next year even if it’s less experienced.

I hope Matthews is gone at this point. Just GTFO.
Honestly, the longer it goes the more it signals to me that he's wanted by this staff. If they had no interest in keeping him, he'd be long gone by now. Clearly there are suitors. Might be that he's worth holding out hope for?

Mike Matthews has reached Harrison Bailey status on this forum. Everyone knows he should have been the starter, except the coaching staff that watched him practice every day.

Funny how everyone wanted Jefferson out of high school but now he’s not good enough for Tennessee.

Fair enough. I shouldn’t have called it a “bad trade” but I’m probably feeling more skeptical of the WR moves compared to everyone else as I simply don’t trust Pope right now to develop. Maybe it’s not fair to Pope or the talent he is trying to bring in, but it’s just how I feel.

With Brazzell as the only returning receiver, bringing in proven production on the field is probably the only way for me to get excited.

The primary “reason” since NIL became a thing for the vast majority of players is $$$. That will remain the primary reason until there is a salary cap, multi year contracts, transfer limitations and real tampering rules. Don’t kid yourself - it’s a show me the money league now.
