No one other than the staff really knows. But he was supposedly hurt in fall camp which delayed his development. Let’s be real, you and I could have taken the field against Kent State and returned a kick or lined up.
Sure, but using him being hurt in fall camp as a reason he didn’t play all season is laughable

Mike Matthews has reached Harrison Bailey status on this forum. Everyone knows he should have been the starter, except the coaching staff that watched him practice every day.

And the staff did such an incredible recruiting job that the wide receiver room is down to, what 2 guys, one of which is a portal guy.

Offensive staff needs to be upgraded.

Two guys that were never going to play?

As in we only have 5 scholarship WR’s right now and you need at least 8, but preferably 9-10 in the room. I think we get a better starter prospect and AJ is a depth piece that could be good later. He’s only a freshman. Chill out.

If his development was delayed, then they only played him in mop up duty. Coaches only play those they trust to make the correct plays. Heupel made a statement about MM at a PC later in the year.

Fair enough. I shouldn’t have called it a “bad trade” but I’m probably feeling more skeptical of the WR moves compared to everyone else as I simply don’t trust Pope right now to develop. Maybe it’s not fair to Pope or the talent he is trying to bring in, but it’s just how I feel.

With Brazzell as the only returning receiver, bringing in proven production on the field is probably the only way for me to get excited.
Understand.

I’m very skeptical of Pope too. The only WR who developed on his watch is Hyatt. And I question if that was actually Pope. In 2021, under Kodi Burns, Hyatt repeatedly got wide open, but dropped passes. Then Hyatt went crazy on the jugs machine to improve his hands before 2022. Had Burns already developed the technical aspects of Hyatt’s game (route running, understanding route trees, etc), but he just couldn’t catch? And then, when he developed his hands by working hard on his own, he blew up? Maybe Pope didn’t really develop Hyatt.

This would make sense, given how Hyatt is such an anomaly under Pope. Bru has gotten worse. Keyton got worse. Hell, I think Squirrel got worse. Tillman and Velus developed under Burns.

Sorry but that doesn’t reflect what happened. He was the one coming out of Summer and then missed several weeks with an injury.

Honestly, the longer it goes the more it signals to me that he's wanted by this staff. If they had no interest in keeping him, he'd be long gone by now. Clearly there are suitors. Might be that he's worth holding out hope for?

Indeed indeed.

One way to look at it is AJ is a dead swap for MM body type and skills and AJ was ranked a little higher. Additionally we are looking for better ball skills and strength over pure speed. AJ fits the bill there. He is not a Brazzell/Thorton type. He can fight off defenders and catch in traffic.

Not sure what to think, but I do find it funny that some say losing MM isn't a big deal and point to his production this season, but AJ is a big deal, despite having no production this season. I'd love to have both. But I'd also love a new WR coach. WR play under Pope hasn't been impressive.

Love it but MM was ranked higher than AJ

If AJ wants to be here and MM doesn’t I’ll take it.
