'25 Portal Thread

Exactly, plus does that cause quality depth and development to transfer?

We keep complaining about none of our high school recruits getting snaps and living in the portal in the OL and nows our first real opportunity for those guys to step into starting spots and we are begging for a transfer lol
Well either their ready and good enough or they’re not.

I hope the coaches evaluate correctly and we finally have an OL that will hold up against anyone we play for a change,
And give our superstar QB the chance to be a superstar!

Does that also goes for Nico? Take the best QB in college Football over him?
I mean……if there is a qb out there that the staff said, “that’s the guy to get us the NC,” then yes.

In theory we all would agree but, as you know, real life doesn't work that way. You basically saying take the best player from each position in the portal if said player is better than your current guy. I team full of mercenaries is not the way to build a program nor culture. This is what i do on NCAA 25 tho lol. Of course you know all this but fun to have the conversation.

Nope. Because you’re already paying Nico a ton. And you’d have to pay that other QB a ton. And you can’t have that much money tied up in a position where only one player starts. Same for LT.

You’re looking at things as if we’re in a pre-NIL world. And what you’re saying would’ve made sense then. But in today’s environment, you have to think of things more like the NFL model.

The Ravens wouldn’t go out looking to sign Patrick Mahomes for a record contract simply because he’s better than Lamar Jackson. Because then you’ve got a ton of money tied up in a backup QB. Same applies here.

Heard is where we allocated our left tackle money.

It’s all conjecture and hypothetical…but ya just stop paying one NIL for another. Kids can transfer now for more money, I can cut a kid for a better player…..I’ll happily cut a $2 million player for a $3 million player if he gives me a much better chance to win.

We don’t know that Tennessee is contractually allowed to do that.

But I doubt Heupel would do that anyway. Doesn’t seem the way he deals. It would destroy credibility when recruiting in the future. There a difference between telling a backup WR who never plays that he’d be better off leaving and telling your starting LT to git.

This. It's not NCAA 2025 on Playstation.

Of course not. And it’s not the way to do things.

But……if my $2 million dollar player can break an NIL deal and go transfer for more money, then I can cut your NIL and find someone else.

Good question! A few reasons:
  1. The SEC is monstrous. OL metrics are adjusted for opponent defense strength, and IOL are also adjusted for the strength of the interior defensive line. Spraggins, as result, doesn’t have the best production stats but he’s got one of the highest SOS boosts.
  2. OL stats are also adjusted for other team factors. In Spraggins case, he gets a slight boost in pass protection metrics because Nico gets a bit more blame for his sacks than most other QBs.
  3. OL stats are quite slow to stabilize, so to get a better predictive stat previous years need to be weighted more heavily. Spraggins did take a step down this year (from an 84 to an 81 I believe) but there’s still a good chunk of last year helping his grade because that’s what the models say is the best way to predict future performance.
  4. He’s still not all that high by SEC standards. Around 40-50th in the SEC which would still put him in the low half of IOL starters in the conference. His grade is relative to the average IOL in all of FBS, and he still grades out as merely above average for that group, though I’d consider him below average for an SEC starter.
Pardon the essay. Hope that helps!
Got it, good stuff

He isn’t that good

No WR is gonna put up crazy stats at Kentucky lol. He’s very good. He’s the type of WR we are missing, very Cedric Tillman like. I wouldn’t be mad at KC, but we have a couple guys that can play the slot just fine.

How is he very good?

The fact that he is in the portal and available makes him a potential upgrade over anyone on our roster to folks. He’s a good player. Is he a great player? No but a good player. Would he represent enough production to warrant limiting Mike Matthews and the 25 class receivers development for a year?

Absloutely not
