'25 Portal Thread

1. We need interior OL. Just have had some gaps in recruiting and in this day and age there is no need to go into a season with a young OL if you can land a portal guy or two. ESPECIALLY with 2025 likely being the last year with Nico. Got to set yourself up to be in the playoffs while he is behind center.

2. On one hand it’s hard to pass up a high-level athlete at receiver, but like some have said it seems almost impossible for a guy to come in a thrive in the first year. Is that more about scheme / coaching or have we just not landed the right guys who were ready?

3. According to Hubbs and co. the staff really likes their young DL and the need for portal DL doesn’t seem as big going into 2025 as they would have thought at the beginning of the season.

4. Under Heupel, it’s seems the next man up at RB is physically and mentally ready to take a massive production jump when it’s his turn to be the feature guy. We’ve seen that with Wright and Sampson. I think between Bishop / Seldon / Lewis one of them will take that next big jump so a portal RB may not be a need.

5. If there is a special pass rusher in the portal you can land, you always try. With the way we rotate, extra pass rushers are not “luxury” they are necessity.

6. At safety I’m good to defer to the staff. We all griped about McCullough and the guy is playing well in the NFL. We were hand wringing about Brooks and he has made plays. If they don’t get a portal guy, we will be fine.
#3 is interesting. And encouraging. I’ve heard Hubbs mention that Garner is high on Wallace. Sounds like maybe they’re high on Robinson too. If true, between Hobbs, Eason, Moi, Wallace, and Robinson, you’ve got a solid 5 in the two DT spots. West or Jenkins could slide inside, as well. And one of the freshmen could also be that 6th guy. If so, we’re as deep in 2025 as we were in 2024.

First time in a while that we need IOL instead of tackles. I would hope a December transfer WR could pick up the offense, if a good one is available.

I’d take Key over KC too.

Edit: for a year anyway. An extra year for KC probably makes it a wash.
KC is widely considered one of the best WRs in the country. He's currently projected as a 1st or 2nd round WR. Key is projected as a late round pick or a UDFA.

Will Levis was a projected top 5 pick and Hendon Hooker was a projected 3-4 rounder.

Dylan Sampson is currently a projected 5-6 rounder.

Jalin Hyatt won the Biletnikoff and went in the 3rd round.

Needless to say, I don’t really care about NFL Draft projection. I care about college production.

KC is better with the football in his hands than Dane Key....Its not even close

more versatile skillset by a lot

outside of Thornton when hes wide open and maybe Matthews we have no catch n run types at all.
Question is if he can get open in this offense vs having been used a ton in motion a) to get open and b) on jet sweeps - stuff we don't do.

Key is a down field threat that KC is not

I think KC is what we want squirrel to be. Not sure he will be, also not sure that means it's worth going after KC.

I think that #2 is a combination of both. Thornton was the #5 option at Oregon for a reason and behind 3 others that were in his same class. He was a physical freak but not a good receiver. We had to develop him, him learn the system and try to get the most out of him in a short amount of time. Brazzell was recruited as a DB at Tulane and only played receiver one year there. Once again we had to develop, him learn the system and learn how to perform at the SEC level. Fortunately we get him for 3 years.

Several with disagree with me but Thornton was a horrible portal pick up. We have invested so many reps and development in a guy where Nimrod/Webb/Leacock/Matthews developments have suffered for minimal production.

That's irrelevant. Talent is talent. And even based on college production, KC still trumps him. So Concepcion is both viewed as more talented and has better production.
