Possible Vacancies

Is there anybody that thought he would fit in at Oklahoma? I'll never forget hearing him speak at our local TD club after he took the Louisville job and with a straight face talked about having them competing for a National Championship within 2 years. The whole audience was looking at him like he was wearing a dress or something.
It was apparent early on that he was a horrible fit at OU. He came in with that typical Schnellenberger bravado. It offended a large number of OU fans. He acted like he was there to build a program where nobody had ever won before. Stoops got it right from the start. He embraced the program's past and ingratiated himself with the Sooner faithful.

I will agree that Howard is the master of hyperbole. However, that doesn't diminish the job he did in building Miami and Louisville. The Cardinals would be members of C-USA and still playing their home games at Cardinal Stadium if he hadn't been the coach there. He's actually built a decent program from scratch at Florida Atlantic. Yes, he has mentioned that he believes the Owls can eventually compete for the National Championship.

I would take Howard in a minute, as long as we had a designated manager to monitor the contents of his water bottle.

I don't do this to attack TCHFCATUTK, but his current plight sparked something in my head. It is quite conceivable that all of the following jobs will be open at the end of the season:
Miami
Clemson
Florida State
North Carolina
Penn State
Michigan
Oklahoma(Stoops to NFL)
Arkansas
Tennessee

I don't remember a season in which there was a possibility that so many top notch jobs could open up.

I would say all but FSU, PSU, and Clemson are game. With stoops being his choice. FSU & PSU seem to have lifetime commits to the HC. Clemson is a great school, but as far as football HC's, they won't do a whole better in team performance replacing CTB with their location and recruiting grounds. I think as long as CTB can keep decent season records he'll be O.K.

That was a huge protion of his problem at OU. Throwing up on the sidelines during the Nebraska game due to a "stomach flu" wasn't exactly the image the Sooner fans wanted to see projected.

As I stated earlier in the thread, I could see Paterno and Bowden walking away after this season. It will be their choice.

then the question would be how many top notch replacement candidates are out there to fill all these potential spots...?

that would be interesting to say the least.

Hopefully Richt will be the "automatic" replacement for Bowden when the time comes, but can you imagine RG following him to FSU? That would be scary.

I may be out to lunch on this one, but I can't imagine that Richt would leave UGA to succeed Bowden.

coker should be gone imo.

notice a trend in miami's record

12-0
12-1
11-2
9-3
9-3

they are just running further into the ground.

with a better coach, miami would be acc favorites every year.

competition has some to do with the deciline. The 11-12 win records were in the big East.

i could see it when UGA hired him, thought it was the perfect grooming job for the FSU job, but if Bowden coaches for a few more years, and Richt continues his success at UGA, it will be hard to lure him a way, esp if the drop off at FSU offensively continues....

he'll know what he's got at UGA, and if he's competing for SEC titles every other year and perennial top 10 program, he'd be foolish to leave that, you'd think anyway....

I agree, when they do leave their respective program, it won't be forced. No one wants to be the person who fired either one of those two.

He's already competing for the SEC title every year

It is hard to say. Following Bowden would be a lot more difficult if his OC wasn't such a moron. At some point Bobby will need to realize he is doing his son a disservice.

i won't discount that, but they lost to UNC and Ga Tech each of the last two years, and Va TEch was in the Big East so they were already playing them every year, and they were playing FSU every year OOC...

I don't see Richt going anywhere either. He is a real good fit at UGA. They won't allow him to get lured away. I'd be real suprised if that ever happened.

if he CONTINUES, (sorry, should have been ultra specific so my post wouldn't be picked apart) to compete for SEC titles every other year...i know he's already won them...you know what i was getting at.

The 2002 Miami team played Tennessee and Florida. How close were those games? The decline in production is proportionately related to a dropoff in talent.

True, but the lesser conference teams are better in the ACC than the Big East. They only had to prepare for maybe 3 real games plus a bowl. They are not as mentally tough for a season long battle. They've never had to be.

miami had to play florida state every year, vt every year, and without that the acc is really not all that good as it is, so it isn't a huge difference that way. and yes as hatvol said miami scheduled tough ooc games in the big east.

i believe if miami vt and boston college stayed in the big east, they would be much better than the acc with wvu, louisville, miami, vt, and bc.

Crazy notion that crossed my mind earlier today: Could Ed Orgeron be the head coach at UT? He is obviously a master recruiter and he doesn't need 10-win seasons to get the job done.

Clemson, Boston College, Virginia, NC State, Maryland, and Georgia Tech are almost always good. I would say they have been better than Arkansas, South Carolina, and Alabama the last 6 seasons.

possibly, and that could be backed up by many people's observation that the ACC as a whole has been the best conference in the nation the past 3 years or so...which i wouldn't necessarily disagree with...

though i expect that to change this year...MD, NCSU and UVA could be awful this year...

Anyone who says that any conference is better than the Big East is just a hater from a small media market!
