Post game thoughts

I had a bad feeling about the game all week. KY's loss to USC was a kick in their butt and I knew they would bring it into TBA. We didn't play well, but I expected KY to win by more. Still, I'm bummed out. GBO.

No reason to overreact after one poorly played game. But I do think Kentucky showed other teams how to defend us. Defend straight up 1x1 on post, don’t let us feel comfortable from perimeter and force us to drive and attempt to finish at the goal. I don’t think we match up well against Alabama.
I don’t know how many other teams we’ll play this year with the athletes to do all of that and not leave an opening to exploit. Alabama might be the only one.

Just make some first grader type layups and we win this game. Nothing really to worry about long term, but we have to figure out a way to stop these awful scoring droughts we go through. It hurts us at the worst times.

Show me a college basketball team that never has a scoring drought and I’ll show you a unicorn.

Um....you think we were "awful" this time last year?
Everyone was saying the offense sucked, we’d be lucky to make the tourney, Fahr Barnes, etc this time last year. The Texas loss had people in effing fits. The offense was awful and had not even shown the sparks we’ve seen from this season’s bunch.

We couldn't hit layups.
Nkamhoua, Phillips, Aidoo, & Mashack combined had almost no impact.
Nkamhoua played terribly soft all game, a stark difference to the last few games.
Plavsic played great, probably best game of the year.
We were pathetic from 3.
Jay Bilas loves him some Kentucky.

I was surprised to see Nkamhoua pulled that quickly in the 2nd half. And then I rewatched the sequence.

That weird pass to Vescovi. Not going after boards. Something was definitely off with the dude today.

This. We were 11-5 at this point, last year, having just gotten blown out by UK at Rupp. Lots of fans ripping our team, the offense, etc.

Story of his 4-year career, unfortunately. Plays like an All-American one game, looks like a dud the next. Just has never shown an ounce of consistency.

Yes, lots of rippping but I asked if we were actually awful, and no we were not. We weren't playing great, but awful is Wade Houston, not 11-5 and just outside the Top 25.

Fair enough. Just providing some context to the idea. It seemed like you had forgotten how down a lot of our fans were at the same point. I agree awful isn't the correct term I think the term was used metaphorically.

I remember, but hell that describes almost every year under Barnes that people start complaining about something with the team or the offense or whatever.

The UK and Texas losses last year had this fan base in the worst spot I’ve maybe seen it in the last 5 years. It was ridiculous.

Yeah, the Texas loss came in late January, so it hadn't happened yet. But yeah, the Legions were out in full force after that game.

I know that some of you just make it an issue of officiating, but our post players do not get to the free throw line. I don't think it's a matter of scheme, because Grant Williams lived at the stripe in 2019. It's a problem.

Did Calipari try to defect to TN’s staff?

I hope that the replay shows it. I have never seen it before.

First, Cal was often completely on the court in the first half when TN had the ball. Like a 6th defender. Rick Pitino used to get away with that all the time, so that one must be a UK exception in the NCAA rule book. I understand.

BUT, late in the game, I think during TN’s possession after Vescovi knocked down 2 free throws for a flagrant 1 against KY, Cal was one step out of the coach’s box. Yes. Cal was ONE FULL STEP OUTSIDE of the coach’s box and there was no technical foul called. No warning. Nothing.

Did I say that it was TENNESSEE’s coach’s box?

I have NEVER seen anything like that before. Maybe I had just stroked out and was unconscious for a few seconds and imagined the whole thing.

Go Vols. Lots of basketball left to play. And to the new wave of drive-by posters that are bringing the stupid… get out!

Don’t you all see it? Barnes is playing the long game. It’s genius. Now it’s going to be more difficult for KY to take away Cal’s lifetime contract.

Seriously. Anyone who willingly attended games during the Wade Houston years should get, like, some sort of certificate of merit and a lifetime stipend for hazard pay. Tennessee players included.

I haven’t seen it posted, but the TN crowd was pathetic. It’s the worst I’ve ever seen for a KY game other than those times that KY blew TN out on their own floor. And the KY fan turnout was the worst I’ve ever seen at the TBA.

Missed layups, missed free throws, poor rebounding, poor 3 point shooting. We all saw that. What I didn’t see in the 2nd half was Awaka. He played well during the few minutes he was on the floor. Want to see more of him with Uros on the block. To Kentucky's credit, they played with great effort. The refs got them to the line and they made the free throws. They rebounded well. They defended well. One thing about coach Barnes… he’ll make sure we learn from this, and those boys will be doing nothing but running and shooting free throws and bunnies in practice. On to the next one.

We need to build a smaller arena that’s actually designed for a college basketball environment like Auburn and Texas just did (and Alabama will soon be doing). Bigger is not automatically better. Keep TBA for concerts, WWE, etc but it’s too much like an NBA environment in there for basketball.

That is such a bad idea with zero chance of happening.
