Practice #11 Monday Morning and Practice #12 Monday evening

LOL, For most these things come naturally. Other kids just have that big stick and never had to worry about mastering some of the finer points. You would be surprised at the 15yr olds I have seen.
My training came from my Dad hitting ground balls and fly balls to me and my brother when we were really little. He coached a fast pitch softball team, but I don't think that we had "finer points," just repetition. I guess that we had a little ability and hand/eye co-ordination, my brother more than me. I am sure that Dad's work with us helped us a bunch.

I used to spend hours throwing a rubber ball or tennis ball against a 2 story brick building next door, and catching the rebounds, trying to make it as hard as possible. I would also throw up rocks and hit them with a broom handle. A baseball and a bat look pretty big after that. Such was practice in the 50's.

Did the same thing in the 90's. Hung a drop cloth between 2 trees and pitched to the strike zone (painted square). Good times!

Help a brother out. Haven't been back to TN in awhile and flying in to Nashville Weds, where can I go to get some good UT VOL merchandise to take back with me to Texas? My wife, a former U of Texas student, said one day "you have too many (TN) orange shirts". I said "That's not possible"! However, some of mine have gotten too holey. Pls give me some stores to shop at & I'll look'em up on google. Thanks!

There are 2/3 places in Opry Mills. The best one there is on the Bass Pro side of the mall. Cracker Barrel has some pretty cool stuff. Walmart has stuff. I bought a couple shirts at a Dollar General for 8 bucks a piece. NCAA official and everything. You'll be in TN, man. That stuff is everywhere!

Yeah, I spent a lot of time with my kids as well and it makes a difference. Just sad there are so many distractions nowadays that kids don't do some of those things anymore. I think I have my son-in-law on the right track with my grandson. My 21 year old son still comes home and likes to play catch with me in the back yard. It something that, as a father, you can never get enough of and a great way to bond with your kids.

I played for Bearden High School in the early 90s. I fabricated a piece of plywood with a pillow attached that I would pitch against in the back yard. For fielding practice i threw a tennis ball against the house and tried to field it and throw the fielded ball against a chain link fence.

Played pitcher and third base. Will have to say that at that time I was already being surpassed by my classmates who played ball all year long for traveling teams and such.

I just wasn't that good and honestly just loved playing baseball. I even carved a bat out of a tree struck by lightning ala Roy Hobbs.

I learned that, even at the high school level it took more dedication and time than just living the game to play on varsity. That, and girls derailed my dreams of being the next "Natural".

One thing I did notice on offense was how quick Derrell Scott is in getting outside and turning the corner. That was noticeable, and not because it was right at me.

The size of the young DBs is noticeable. Rashaan Gaulden looks taller than the 6’1 he’s listed at. When he adds muscle he’s going to be a big cornerback, if he stays there.

If Curt Maggitt were not available in the opener, I think Barnett would start.

Is everyone else happy to hear that we actually have talented depth this year in our roster? I hate that Maggitt is out right now as I really want him out there wrecking some folks, but I'm a whole lot happier than the coaches don't have to dig through a roster for a replacement if a player gets injured.

I keep hearing about Malone being lack luster and sluggish. Does he even want to be here? I constantly see him drop balls and it almost looks on purpose. What's his deal?
We seem to forget that he's just an 18 year old kid. This is his first time living away from home. That alone would be enough to make a young player go through the motions. Some kids adjust to college life faster than others. We need to give him a break, none of us know what he is going through.

You are so right. I have no idea what pressure he must be under to catch a football.

When I was his age Uncle Sam shaved my head and sent me to Vietnam where some very short people took turns trying to kill me. Nobody gave a damn about me, and so many other 18 year olds, being 10k miles from home, lonely and scared.sh!tless.

I can't imagine the tremendous stress he must be under and agree he deserves our sympathy and support for his lack of effort. Is everyone invited to this pity party?:cray:

Thanks Rambo. Now that we know your story of heroics, we are all free to judge a kid we don't know based on maybe 45 seconds of combined film footage and analysis from guys who only witness a negligible portion of practices.

Hopefully Curt will be a full go for our first game of the season in Norman. No reason to play him in the two preseason games.

Who are YOU to judge me with NO KNOWLEDGE of my military history? I'm merely pointing out that an 18 year old should be mentally tough enough to catch a f#ing football without some apologist using homesickness and age as an excuse for lack of effort.

BTW,I was only one of the nearly 1.2 million young men and women who served in Vietnam. I was certainly no hero and freely admitted to being scared sh!tless. If you read me proclaiming myself to be a Rambo, I'm sure there is a Sylvan learning center near you that helps A'holes with their reading comprehension.

Your experience and Malone's experience aren't comparable. Also, you and Malone aren't the same people. Ergo, you can't possibly compare you and your experience with him and his experience. That is to say, these experiences are subjective and can only be seen from the perspective of the individual experiencing them. So quit with all the grandpa lectures.

Yes, thank you for your service.

I am neither young, nor old. I am 41. But, this is the second time this week I have seen youngsters and older guys barking at each other about being either "young and stupid" or a "grandpa".

The personal insults are just that, PERSONAL. You are both here because you love the VOLS. No need to be nasty with one another. I'm usually not one to get into other's business, but I don't like to see Vol fans be disrespectful to one another. Save it for the gators or tide...

Gotcha. We should all respect each other, but it is perfectly acceptable to trash the players of the team we all love without even a shred of back story. We're all cool with bashing woody Quinn because he's not super good at football. We jump all over a freshman wide receiver based on 45 seconds of film and a couple of reports by people that don't even get to stick around for the important parts of practice.

I don't disagree with anything you just said. I don't think a few posters speak for the whole board. In most cases, I think (hope) the "bashers" are kids the same age as the players. Even though its not OK, they are speaking from a kid's or a peer's point of view and not as a grown man who understands these players are still young and trying to figure things out.

I just want to read posts about football, without the personal attacks. I will try and not post any further on this. Can't we all just get along? LOL
