Practice #11 Monday Morning and Practice #12 Monday evening

-Lightening forced practice inside Monday night.
-Lane and North were seen fully dresssed and taking contact.
-Maggitt continues to be absent.
-Dobbs threw it better, not outshining the others, but more like himself

The highlight of Monday’s brief media viewing window was the one-on-one pass-catching drills, and the biggest highlight probably came when sophomore cornerback Cameron Sutton absolutely rocked North to jar the ball free for an incomplete pass over the middle. That fired up the defense in a big way, but it wasn’t the only big moment, nor the first. Freshman safety Cortez McDowell also had a nice pass breakup on a jump ball down the sideline with junior receiver Johnathon Johnson. In other moments, junior tight end Alex Ellis beat junior safety LaDarrell McNeil and made a nice catch on a well-thrown ball by Dobbs, freshman tight end Ethan Wolf breezed past sophomore safety Lemond Johnson, senior Jacob Carter got the best of freshman cornerback RaShaan Gaulden is what surely will be a learning moment for him

-Malone still looks sluggish and had trouble getting any separation in one-on-one battles against Payne and Moseley.

Fast Five: Tennessee Vols football Monday night practice

An obsevation that I made watching the video is the Dobbs and Worley throw the ball with a stiff front leg. Worley's is occasionally bent. Peterman's front leg is always bent.

I say this because my son plays catcher. His coach pointed out to him that when he throws the ball high over the head of the 2nd baseman or short stop his front knee is locked (stiff front leg). This causes the ball trajectory to be high. If he steps further and bends his front knee the ball is on target, low, close to the base the way it is supposed to be.

Petermans throws look to be right on target, right at the numbers. Dobbs and Worley's passes are somethime high. I don't know if the mechanics are the same when throwing a football, however the engineer in me says yes.

Help a brother out. Haven't been back to TN in awhile and flying in to Nashville Weds, where can I go to get some good UT VOL merchandise to take back with me to Texas? My wife, a former U of Texas student, said one day "you have too many (TN) orange shirts". I said "That's not possible"! However, some of mine have gotten too holey. Pls give me some stores to shop at & I'll look'em up on google. Thanks!

Hubbs speculating on Maggitt from earlier:

I think he will miss all this week and will be at best limited next week. My guess is the hope is to have him ready to practice game week, but that's just my speculation.

I'm afraid this season is going to mirror the 08 season as far as QB's go[/

Hopefully not, but these are probably our guys for the next 2 years (Worley only 1 year). There's no freshman QB this year on deck and it will be difficult for a true freshman to play well next year. Hopefully they all play awesome this year.

I mean I'm just saying - and I know, I know that we only are seeing clips and bits - but I think of it more as an audit. A sample of the true population.

But Butch's full quote from today was:

"We are getting closer to naming a starting quarterback," Jones said after Tennessee's practice Monday morning at Haslam Field. "I’m going to go back and watch the film this morning, a little bit tonight. But I expect, if things go the way they’ve been going, we’ll name a starting quarterback at some point this week."

And the media tracked a period where they pulled Peterman out to do drills on the other side of the field (yes, again, could be maintenance) but tracked Dobbs and Worley. Combined 7/17. Worley alone 2/9 in those drills. (Practice Notes and Observations: 8/11 PM | Rocky Top Insider)

All reports have been of 14 and 11's struggles this Fall. And CBJ has said numerous times, if one of them steps out and is consistent and separates themselves then they will be the starter.

...this place is about to have a meltdown...

i would not be surprised if maggitt hurt himself jumping and down like we have seen him do in photos. i hope he gets better in time for florida at least if not okie and uga as well.

Peterman has always had a perception problem owing to Jones's stupid decision to start him against florida, and his utterly woeful but not unexpected performance in that game.
