This kid isn't used to practicing hard, that's my guess. He needs to be a better practice player. And the coaches are trying to push him. I don't take it to mean he's a failure to this point, nor does it say anything about his talent level.
Anyone who watched the spring game saw glimpses of what the kid is capable of. I don't recall too many true freshmen coming in and putting up a performance like that.
Nor do I and I agree with everything you just said. I think people need to be a little tempered about the spring game because of who he was playing against. They kind of set that up for him.
I agree about tempering expectations. I don't expect Malone to come in and put up 100-yard games right off the bat, I don't care what he's ranked. There aren't many athletes who can come in as a true freshman and dominate in this league. North had to do it last year, because we didn't have any other options. With Malone, the coaches can slow play him a little since we have more depth at the position.
Just based upon what you've seen from Malone if he were in North's situation last year do you think he could have performed as well?
I have no idea. All I have to go on is the spring game, where he played really well, and some practice clips of various drills.
The question is, aside from a few motivational quotes, what is it that makes you think he can't?
I think not only is North freakish (excuse the pun) in his athletic ability but also very disciplined. Malone doesn't appear to be that disciplined. Even in the spring game he out athleticized whomever was covering him-made something out of chaos. North is very disciplined. Let's see if Malone can go across the middle in the SEC and catch passes like North can. I hope he can. Having two Northlike receivers on the team would be beyond wonderful.
Like I said, North had a really solid year for a freshman. I don't know whether Malone can live up to that standard or not. I think he has the ability, but he obviously needs to work harder in practice. It will also be much more difficult to get reps in this year's receiver rotation.
But I still think it's unfair of you to say of Malone, "so far he is nowhere near the player" North was, based on two weeks of fall practice. :hi:
Regardless, it sure is nice to have a best like North on the roster and be able to make comparisons between he and our 5-star freshman. The future is looking bright my friend.

It's maddeningly annoying when people make comments that A) they obviously know nothing about, and B) have no way of knowing anything about things they know nothing about.
You have no idea if Josh Malone is disciplined or not. You, literally, do not know, nor do you have any current way of observing and drawing a conclusion about his work ethic -- additionally, nobody's made a judgment about his work ethic that would be qualified to make such comments.
Likewise, you don't have a clue what North does or doesn't do, and can't compare the two when you don't even have the slightest clue as to what either do well or poorly.
do not kill the messenger....
but there are more than a few around Sumner county who followed him who believe he will be a bust in college.
I have never seen a single live game for Station Camp and have never seen him play so I have no idea if it is just talk or what...but I have been told more than once by people who mentioned he wasn't going to be that great.
I hope they are wrong. I am pulling for him because he's from Hendersonville and a Vol so I hope the talk was just bull**** and jealousy.
I guess I will find out.
Just out of my own curioussity, wasn't there a Donald LB or DE under Fulmer who was a 5 star bust?

Why's Azzanni beating him over the head in the press? Maybe thinking he should be getting more out of him? Trying to motivate him? Coaches don't normally do this to a freshman.
Here's something else to annoy you:
Wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni spent much of a pass-and-catch drill making sure freshman Josh Malone was minding his fundamentals. CTT stands for catch-tuck-turn not catch-turn-tuck, Azzanni told him. Dont get them switched.
Seems he isn't very disciplined.
