Practice #3 - Updates

Jancek: The difference is speed is apparent at all positions on defense.

Jancek: Moving @JohnsonJakob to DL from LB is about speed. That equates to more speed up front. That's the type of move we will look to make

. @UTCoachJancek: Obv not as big as last year but wenare going to have to be (more active) to keep big guys from laying on them." #Vols

Jancek: Depth is huge on the DL. We are helping the depth with development. We are helping with depth with recruiting.

Jancek: We get them here in the summer and we get them excited. Them we put the pads on and the real evaluation starts.

Sounds more like Chavis...

Steve Stripling expects Derek Barnett & Dewayne Hendrix to stick at DE. Said it's the complete package when a guy is 275 pounds & athletic.

Azzanni: We got to put the pads on today so there was even more intensity. I'm pleased with our different skill sets.

Azzanni: North is night and day from last year. He understands our expectations. He's a better leader.

Azzanni: We haven't gotten the results on Cody Blanc's MRI yet.

Azzanni: Yes we have potential, but time will tell. They have been up and down thru 3 days. Little by little we are gaining consistency.

Azzanni: The competition is fun for these guys. It's healthy, which is what we are striving for.

"Do you want to win?," Jones asked, getting a resounding "Yes!" from his players. "I didn't like the way we came out. It was unacceptable."

Among the one-on-one battles that highlighted the drills were:

Coleman Thomas battling Dewayne Hendrix to a virtual stalemate; Jalen Hurd winning with a takedown of Cortez McDowell; Elliot Berry more than holding his own against Lemond Johnson; Rashaan Gaulden, a day after sitting out with a high-ankle sprain, scoring a decisive win against Geraldo Orta with a takedown; Kenny Bynum toppled Gavin Bryant; Dontavius Blair looked better than at any point in the spring in this drill, repeatedly handling Jashon Robertson, who had gotten an earlier win. Todd Kelly Jr. and Derrell Scott were pretty even until Kelly gained the upper hand; Chris Weatherd "beasted" Justin King, according to a UT staffer near the circle who witnessed it first-hand; Josh Malone took down Evan Berry; Dillon Bates appeared to top A.J. Branisel and Neiko Creamer while one of the final battles saw Derek Barnett overpower Daniel Helm.

Defensively, the Vols worked a number of unique looks and also repped looks with much greater speed on the field. The Vols had Curt Maggitt, Dimarya Mixon and Corey Vereen together up front in a package that also saw A.J. Johnson and Jalen Reeves-Maybin roaming around a bit with a bevy of defensive backs in the mix.

Malik Foreman was back after missing Saturday's practice due to a death in the family; Foreman got some first-team reps at left corner along with Emmanuel Mosley.

-Jacob Gillam still at left tackle. Worley, Lane, North, Pearson, Malone. All three TEs rotated.

-The new walk-on Dellen Hash, quit.

Stripling: Barnett and Hendrix are ahead of the other freshman D-linemen.

Gillespie on new backs: Paulk is knocking off rust from his injury, but I like the way Scott is running.

Vic is going to be a factor this year. Coach Z foreshadowing IMO...

I have never had a freshman come in, and I've been doing this a long time, and practice as well as Vic Wharton has so far.

Azzanni: We are still so young. It's a whole different culture we are instilling.

Azzanni: Marquez wants to be the "fuel" for his teammates.

Azzanni: @JoshSmith_25 is going to w a very goo player here. Sky's the limit. He's quick twitch. He's so mature and very consistent.

Azzanni: @vwharton4, as far as a habits, I have never had a freshman that has had first 2 days like he has. He's got a great mentality.

Bajakian: We have a long way to go where we want to get to. We didn't come out with that mentality we new to have.

Bajakian: I need much more consistency at QB than where we are right now

Bajakian: We have been more aggressive with install. They have trained hard all year long. Conditioning we are in good shape

Bajakian: I want to see a tough OL that plays with physicality and toughness and chemistry. They have really good attitude.

Bajakian: Daniel helm and Wolf have added great depth. Alex Ellis is doing good things. Downs and Branisel doing what we ask of them.

Bajakian: Last year we had 63 dropped balls on day one, this year 62 balls on day one. Day 2 we had 45 dropped balls. We are improving.

I really hope a QB actually separates from the pack. Seems pretty disappointing so far.

This thread sucks. Claims to have updates from practice and theres literally nothing. Thanks op. Good info.

I am with you completely. Why make the thread if you have no information to offer. I guess I will go ahead and make the official practice number 4 updates thread ahead of time so I can feel special.

Mahoney: There is no classification. It's about getting the job done.

Mahoney: Blair can handle our up-tempo better. He's in better shape. He's a lot stronger. I'm encouraged after 3 days.

You have anything to share or are you just here to complain?
