The defensive package with Maggitt, Mixon, and Vereen up front with AJ and Reeves Maybin roaming the line sounds nasty. I'm just ready for a consistent pass rush that we use to have in the late 90's early 00's
I mean, I really don't think there's any chance that Worley isn't starting against Utah State. Does anyone think Dobbs might actually win the job before the first game?
Competition is good and all, but I don't understand why Jones just didn't name Worley the starter, make him a captain and move on. There have been rumblings that Worley was upset that he wasn't chosen to go to SEC Media Days and I don't see any reason why he shouldn't have gone. JMO.
Tennessees third practice of fall camp needed three restarts.
Head coach Butch Jones barked out orders to hit the restart button on stretch drills three straight times Sunday afternoon, after his football team entered practice with a less than desirable mindset.
First it was the fault of Jason Croom, for not clapping in unison with the rest of his team. Then it was freshman running back Jalen Hurd, who didnt have his chin strap buckled. Then it was freshman safety Rashaan Gaulden, who was caught not clapping.
The slow start called for an extended rendition of Joness trademark Circle of Life drill, which made its fall camp debut and ran around 15 minutes in length.
Justin Worley continues to look like the leader of the three-man quarterback battle, getting reps before sophomores Nathan Peterman or Joshua Dobbs. In what limited team drills that have taken place in front of the media, Worley has worked in first with Marlin Lane at running back and Marquez North, Von Pearson (in the slot) and Josh Malone as the first set of wide receivers. Pig Howard, Josh Smith and Croom have been the first rotations in at receiver. Daniel Helm, Ethan Wolf and Brendan Downs rotated in with the first unit at tight end.
Ill give you a pair of names, Stripling said when asked about his newcomers. I think Barnett and Hendrix have jumped out, and theyre showing that I think theyre mature enough and physical enough at this point to where well see where they can end up on the depth chart.
No, theyre both ends, Stripling said. Its all based on your athleticism. They can be large and athletic, and they can still play end, if that makes sense. Youve got the real package when you can get a 275-pound end thats athletic.
Thats the real deal right there.
Tennessees defensive line coach said three position changes linebackers Curt Maggitt and Jakob Johnson moving to defensive end, and and Jordan Williams moving inside to tackle also boosted the Vols athleticism up front.
3rd practice, and CBJ made sure the energy was up and the small details was covered. He challenged the leadership of team @ beginning of day
Von Pearson was the player of CBJs choice to challenge today. VP feeds off of it and it makes him better. He loves it.
Hard to keep Swafford off the field and he is working at the top strong safety position. He is a playmaker.
Marlin Lane's leadership crystal clear. He leading a young RB group and doing a great job. Leading by actions. Theyre speaking loud
Swafford is playing a diff position this yr than last. Don't judge him yet. SS maybe his position. Jancek is putting the best 11 on field
"Hard word, and Coach Jones is the best. He has a vision, and he works every day to make it a reality."
--John BriceAlso found it very telling that Coach Gillespie voluntarily told me --- as I was asking about Derrell Scott and Treyvon Paulk --- that Gillespie no longer considers Jalen Hurd a freshman and that Hurd does not carry himself as a freshman
A dispute erupted during between senior Devrin Young and freshman RaShaan Gaulden. Both got in a couple of punches each before they could be separated when their facemasks locked up during the confrontation. Jones was so annoyed by the fight that he ordered: All of the team leaders report to The Hole. Both players are extremely confident and neither backs down from a challenge. No news on what started the dispute.
Jones called out Kendal Vickers and Jaylen Miller afterwards, saying both "hid" and didn't want to compete. I gave you seven opportunities, Vickers, and you hid, Jones said, pausing before adding: You hid, too, Jaylen Miller.
Jones challenged the leadership ability of Joshua Dobbs.
Both safety Devaun Swafford and linebacker Justin King were called out over the mic by Jones for walking on Haslam Field. This Tennessee staff runs extremely up-tempo practices and running won't be tolerated. Jones threatened to send Swafford "in for the day."
