Practice #4 - Updates

Competition is great, but I want to see a starter taking atleast 50% of the camp snaps to build continuity with his backs, receivers, and line.

When you're essentially splitting starting reps between 3+ players, the team is not able to build the continuity with the starter, and that causes issues down the road.

Establish a starter, let 2nd and 3rd string fight it out for a true backup position. Let the team rally around the starter, otherwise you have people picking favorites, teammates preferring one QB over another. This causes rifts with a team...

It's happening at Alabama right now, the team prefers one QB, the coaches prefer another, and it's caused a problem in their locker room

IIRC, Jones honed it down to two late in camp last year. I suspect he'll do the same this year.

I don't think I've heard of a rift. In fact, there were more rumors of grumbling when Fulmer was HC with Crompton behind Ainge. At least publicly, the players say they are ready to play with any of the QB's. Seeing that they elected both Worley and Dobbs to their player council and Peterman is said to be popular with the other players... there doesn't seem to be a problem.

Do u think the peterman call at UF was a good one

Do you think Peterman looked like that in practice?
Do you think the coaches thought he would get shell shocked?
Do you understand why they tried to give him a chance to correct himself?
Do you understand that they tried Peterman to try and keep the DE and OLB honest on some runs since Worley wasn't keeping the ball because he was timid as well?
Do you realize Butch was trying to win the game by changing the starter?
Do you realize moves don't always work out?

Some people are doers and some complain about what is done. I never have a problem with a coach making a personnel move in order to win a game. He has his own mind, own experiences, own supporting cast, own advisors on staff and team. And it still is funny that someone on the internet can hindsight it and from the chair, say he butchered it. That's the easy way out and anybody can blanket statement the move.

Fr all reports Worley is the guy so why not go with him?

The only thing that concerns me about the qb competition is that we don't have the luxury of playing a cupcake early on this season to figure things out. I would like to see a leader emerge sooner than later so he can get on the same page with the backs/receivers. The longer we wait the shakier i become about the Utah State game.

Hey fans. Let's not start jumping off bridges and kicking our dogs just yet. The coaching staff is acting as it should to motivate and foster competition. Jones knows a lot more about what he is doing than us fans in the peanut gallery who wring our hands and watch for the sky to fall. There are a lot of concerns such as youth and lack of depth that the staff are trying to manage at this point. This is going to be a tougher season than many of us might expect. So just relax and either enjoy or suffer through the season and hope we can somehow go bowling. Maybe we can pull off an upset or two because of the tough practices right now.

I was at Parris Island and know first hand that young Marine recruits are given more than they can handle, screw up a lot, get beaten down and feel as low as whale manure. But when it counts, they kick butt when the real bullets start flying. If the DIs were sunshine pumpers and giving praise for meeting mediocre standards I doubt the Corps would be very successful.

At this point, I want my coach to be tough as nails so the team will perform better when the real bullets start flying in a few weeks.

He will be. It's day 4. What if Worley gets hurt. Wouldn't the 2nd team qb have to come in and play with the 1's?
He's also still tearing guys down and building them up. It's day 4 in yr 2. Day 4.

I agree. I think people also forget that CBJ has also rested qbs from time to time by limiting their throws and allowing others to work with the ones.

He's the coach so he should know. It's his only flaw I see so far IMO

You seem to think CBJ will name a guy a starter and that simple act alone will turn him into the next coming of Peyton. Perhaps, and I'm just throwin this out here, that maybe he hasn't named a starter because no one has earned the job yet.

Labelling someone as the starter will not instantly make them good.

Also... it's been awhile since I've had a math class but I believe it is mathematically possible to give one guy more than half the reps and still split them three ways. Of course I was educated in TN so lemme double check...
