Practice #5 Updates

so Butch tears his team down a little yesterday and rebuilds them the day before an off day.

And I bet he's had that planned for awhile. Just sayin. There are days when teams and players are going to get it no matter what and imo, yesterday was one of them.

You should watch Vic's video if you haven't already. About minute or two in (sorry can't remember the exact time) they ask him about CBJ getting angry yesterday and Vic immediately starts grinning/trying to suppress that grin and telling the questioner what he wants to hear (they ask Vic something like what was that like for you as a freshman yadda yadda). I'm not saying CBJ didn't get mad at them last practice, that they didn't frustrate him to some degree, or that they still don't have tons to improve on before kickoff but it's worth noting Vic's response. Vic is very smart young man, imo. :)

Need to study tackling 101 imo. How this is such a lost art confounds me.

So he's not "SOFT and TURRIBLE" after all?

There was one RB drill in the RTI video where you could see how fast Jalen Hurd really is. Marlin Lane ran it first and Jalen immediately followed and the difference in speed was amazing. In a later drill that follows it, you can tell Hurd isn't as comfortable with it and looked more 'normal' (like a regular SEC running back if that can be called normal - lol) but in that one drill the speed and agility was noticeable. Lane ran it fast (and he looks faster this year than he has in the past) but Hurd ran it faster.

Can't wait to see Lane, Hurd, and Scott wearing out and embarrassing defenders this year.

Von is going to turn some heads this year. Wow. Who needs an offensive line when you can just run bubble screens? Gotta do the Dave Clawson thing and get the ball to playmakers in space.

With all do respect....please don't say that. Bad memories!

AJ. What a class act. Fans need to realize that he not only will impact this years team, but also is showing the young men how to be leaders. His actions will effect this team for years. AJ is becoming our next Al.

Rucker says Josh smith continues to get most of the 1st-team reps and is taking advantage of the opportunity. According to Wes, he's getting open, making catches and showing good elusiveness in space.

Doing a great job Rollie! Thanks for all the summer practice info! Go Vols!!

And that's the way the QB order will stack up come 8/31 IMO.

Quarterback Work: I thought the quarterbacks looked a little bit better today. In the seven-on-seven or ‘skeleton’ work, the quarterbacks went 5 for 8 and actually moved the chains a couple of times without making any mistakes. Worley and Josh Dobbs took a series each with the ones and twos, respectively, and Mike Wegzyn took the third team reps (more on him later).

In drill work, the quarterbacks finished 22 of 32 on end zone throws against air. That number probably looks worse than it really was as multiple times receivers failed to get their feet down and make plays that they should have made – they are ruled incomplete, but the quarterbacks actually made some nice throws in this portion. As the players get their timing down, this is an area that will prove to be a big strength for this team given their size at WR.

Justin Worley was the first quarterback up, and his only completion in four throws was a quick, wide throw to North. Randolph had a nice breakup of a pass intended for Pearson, as he came through the junior college transfer to knock the ball away. North just missed a long catch down the sideline on Worley's first throw.

Croom and Malone caught short passes from Josh Dobbs with the second group, and Payne excellently defended a deep ball intended for Croom. Among the second group defensively: Payne and Riyahd Jones at corner, Foreman at nickelback, McNeil and Lemond Johnson at safety and Dillon Bates and Kenny Bynum at linebacker.

The qb competition is far from settled.

You know it. I know it. Others just need to realize it. I think it's a good thing. I think it's a good thing that CBJ is still making it a competition. Just making sure that Justin earns it is all that CBJ is doing.

Josh Smith has looked great in what limited footage I've seen. The whole wide receiving staff has looked pretty good
