Practice #5 Updates

As much as I love practice highlights, it only services to remind me the talent differential between us and teams like Alabama and Auburn. It's still immense.

We just don't have the players.

We have the players they are a) just arriving or b) haven't graduated high school yet lol.

Josh Smith was the forgotten man in the summer by VN and the media but it sounds like he's having a great camp so far. Could be an effective option if he irons out the drop issues.

My brother lives in maryville and told me Josh hasnt had a single drop in practice yet. Said he heard it on a radio talk show. Don't know if legit, just what he heard. If so good for the young man, if he can get over that image. I liked his speed and route moves last year.
GO VOLS It's time to beat some a$$ !!!!

Tennessee football practice report: Vols finally in full pads | Times Free Press

Quarterback Work: I thought the quarterbacks looked a little bit better today. In the seven-on-seven or ‘skeleton’ work, the quarterbacks went 5 for 8 and actually moved the chains a couple of times without making any mistakes. Worley and Josh Dobbs took a series each with the ones and twos, respectively, and Mike Wegzyn took the third team reps (more on him later).

In drill work, the quarterbacks finished 22 of 32 on end zone throws against air. That number probably looks worse than it really was as multiple times receivers failed to get their feet down and make plays that they should have made – they are ruled incomplete, but the quarterbacks actually made some nice throws in this portion. As the players get their timing down, this is an area that will prove to be a big strength for this team given their size at WR.

Justin Worley was the first quarterback up, and his only completion in four throws was a quick, wide throw to North. Randolph had a nice breakup of a pass intended for Pearson, as he came through the junior college transfer to knock the ball away. North just missed a long catch down the sideline on Worley's first throw.

Croom and Malone caught short passes from Josh Dobbs with the second group, and Payne excellently defended a deep ball intended for Croom. Among the second group defensively: Payne and Riyahd Jones at corner, Foreman at nickelback, McNeil and Lemond Johnson at safety and Dillon Bates and Kenny Bynum at linebacker.

The qb competition is far from settled.

Oh it's settled. You just gotta have the courage to believe it. I'm a Dobbs fan too, but he'll back Worley up this year, ahead of 3rd string Peterman.

It was nice watching the 1 on 1 drill and seeing all those jukes offensively. I love to see a good tackle too like AJ beasting Branisel but we need better offensive production this year above all else. If we have line or QB issues it'd be nice to know we have some skill guys that can create a spark where none exists.

Btw, there's just a teensy weensy bit more to QB evaluation than a series of 4 throws. Doubt Butch will drop down Worley from his firm grasp as the starter after your highlighted 1 for 4 throwing during a team drill.

that Gamble kid doesnt look bad at all. Its pretty apparent hes fast as hell.

Careful there RiseToTheTop in praising Gamble or you will be accused of being his father or himself by Beattie Feathers and others. :p

All kidding aside, I've commented on Gamble a few times over the last couple of days. I think he looks really good too. We're fortunate to have him, he was a top 100 4* WR out of HS.

Josh Smith was a starter last year for good reason. Elusive and quick. Called one of the fastest players on the team by Moseley, who we thought was fastest. Lets hope he translates what he bring in the practice field over to actual games this time around.

Moving Maggitt: One new look we saw on the defensive field was somewhat of a 4-3 under formation with this front seven:

DE: Kendal Vickers, Corey Vereen
DT: Danny O’Brien, Jordan Williams
LB: A.J. Johnson, , Curt Maggitt, Jalen Reeves-Maybin

Maggitt was walked up as a blitzing outside linebacker in that look, so it functioned as almost a 5-2 front. That’s anther example of how they can use the versatile redshirt junior to keep offenses off balance.

I like the sound of this package, reminds me of what the Seahawks are running.

The funny thing is when you see Moseley's comment on Smith's speed.

For, well, pigment reasons I'm sure Moseley didn't expect him to be so fast. UT can use that to their advantage when every opponent sticks a DE to cover Smith because, well, pigment reasons.

Obligatory "Moseley's a racist IMO"

These threads are turning into VolNation Comment Likefest 2014, I guess that mean's positive things are coming? :)

But little Janie just laughed and laughed. Cause she knew we weren't scheduled to play Auburn.

Yet we DO now have the talent to match up with GA and SC, not to mention Mizzou, Ole Miss, KY and Vandy. We are on the rise. :loco:

We're coming for ya, Auburn. Soon. :shades:

I thought racism only was present in our country during election years
