Practice begins

Forget jumpshots. We could've built a house with all the bricks she shot on layups over the span of her career. I've never seen a 6'3" player shoot layups from their hip. No telling how many more assists Parker, in particular, could've had if not for her blowing the layup.

I do remember Amb in particular was fond of her missing these layups on the ESPN board. LOL

I loved the energy and passion Big Nicky brought to the game, but I cringed every time she went up for a shot. I knew nothing good would come out of it, except potentially an offensive rebound.

I never thought I'd ever see a post player get blocked so many times by guards. Then Bashaara Graves came along........

Nicky was noted for her rebounding but at least half of her rebounds were from layups she missed. She used to frustrate me to no end.

Graves gets tied up a lot because, offensively, she plays slow in the paint. She gets rebounds and then wants to bring the ball down, before going back up. This gives defenders time to get over to her and get their hands up, makes it more difficult to score. You have to be quick in the paint--have a quick release, use your body for leverage. She just doesn't have a scorer's touch or instincts around the basket, though she has slowly gotten a bit better. Last year she started taking 12-15 footers and, to her credit made a lot of them--but she'd hold the ball for two+ seconds before deciding to shoot.

Losing Nared for a while is bad because she is likely to be first off the bench for us. Don't know if she can practice with the injury--might be hard.

I don't think Bash has quite the problem Nicky had. Glory was very Nicky-esque with layups when she got to UT when it comes to shooting layups too low, but that got fixed. Plus, Glory can jump -- Bash and Nicky can't.

She won't miss any practice time as it's her off-shooting hand, although she may miss some practice time when it comes to full-contact. But she won't be playing because I'm sure the staff won't risk hurting it further. She should be back around Thanksgiving or soon thereafter, I would think.

We always have freak accidents with broken hands. Hornbuckle broke her wrist diving for a loose ball and missed about a month. Cierra Burdick broke her hand a couple years ago when her hand got tangled in a teammate's jersey in practice, and she missed I think about a month. Both of them played with a soft cast for quite a while after they came back -- and in Hornbuckle's case it was near the end of the season.

Omggggg Nicky was honestly you guys, the first person I had ever witnessed play basketball at a high level miss SO many layups. I used to look at the tv screen in disgust because I used to get soooooo mad and think "How the hell can you miss so many easy shots under the basket." She did compensate in other aspects of her game however, specifically rebounding and defense. Glory used to frustrate me alot as well. Like another poster said, she finally corrected that. Bash has it bad as too. When I played basketball in high school, I done the same thing. The reason being, if I was going up against taller players in the post, shooting it slightly from the hip or mid section always allowed for the initual contact that you receive from the post player to not affect the shot too much and it also gives a sense of balance. It's normally used by players who play very physical in the post. When you do that so much, almost every time you go up for a layup, your body is looking for that other body to make contact with so you can get a steady shot off. That's why Nicky, Glory, and Bash always threw/throw their bodies into a post player when they went/go up and if you notice when they miss the initial contact, they tend to miss the layup. It's a hard habit to get rid of but the plus side to it is getting alot of potential "And 1s"

I actually really like Bashaara and have continuously defended her. She's' an undersized post who plays even smaller because she lacks length and lacks hops. But she still puts it all on the court, even when up against bigger players. She's got good form, but she's still too susceptible to getting blocked even by smaller players. If only God gave her a longer wingspan....

It's amazing how Nina Davis is 3 inches shorter but still manages to play so much bigger.

Nina is what I call a "quick flinch" type of post player. She's extremely quick when getting the basketball and goes up immediately with the ball held high. She gets the ball off fast not allowing for a block or and a late reaction from the slower post player. It's very effective against the slower poster players that Nina usually goes up against.

What did you think about Alex Fuller... I personally liked during her time as a Lady Vol.. Just wished she had layed more or really new how good she was

So what do yall think the starting 5 will be for the Lady Vols?

PG: Cooper
SG: Reynolds
W: DeShields
PF: Graves
C: Russell

??

Carter started most of last season, and could play for Cooper at first until Cooper gets more experience, but Carter isn't a true PG is she? Reynolds is the top returning assist G with the departures of Massingale and Burdick, and y'all need some experience at the point to start out, or no??

Anosike was a defensive beast--she and Parker shut down opponents inside, and Hornbuckle was a good perimeter defender. I don't recall Anosike having bad hands, but she definitely lacked confidence on offense--almost never took a jump shot until the NCAA tourney her final year. Players like Anosike, who are getting a lot of playing time but lack confidence on offense, should be made to shoot, starting early, until they get comfortable doing it. Graves is another example--last year finally started shooting some jumpers.

Hornbuckle does basketball training in maryville now.... My daughter trains with her.

Reynolds will be the starting PG just like last year. I'm hoping Cooper will eventually be the starter by the time SEC play roles around...assuming Cooper is as good as advertised.

Fuller is and always has been a terribly underrated player and looks to be developing into a pretty good coach. I think she had so much more in her than we ever were able to see. Her size and skill set were awesome.

I remember that elite 8 game against Ole Miss she kept draining 3's.. They didn't have a nswer for anything that was being thrown at them

Nah. Holly is completely in love with Carter and Reynolds. We would have to pry them out of Holly's cold, dead hands.

perimeter defender--and you have to have good perimeter defenders if you want to be good. In fact, that has been a problem for UT in recent years. Neither Massengale nor Simmons were good defenders. You can't have guards who can't guard. What's the consensus on Reynolds defensively?

I think cooper should start and Jordan should play the 2. Carter should come off the bench she is nothing but a hustle player to be honest & you guys talk about how great she is on defense when she didn't stop nun of the top guards last year, Jewel Lloyd scored 30 on her & Tiffany Mitchell avg 18 against lady vols & the list goes on

The issue with that is that Te'a and Reynolds are both Point Guards where Middleton and Carter is more 2 guards (although Te'a can play off the ball as well). With Reynolds playing so well (she isn't the best shooter of the 3 guards) you have to keep her at the 1 and her size at almost 6'0 (5'11) makes her a tough match up and she also loves attaching the basket (just wish she makes her shots) so if you are replacing Te'a with Carter (which I wouldn't be opposed of) I think you have to play Te'a at the 2 guard and not the Point Guard when Reynolds is in the game. I am most looking forward to the lineup of;

PG-Te'a
SG-Carter
SF-Diamond
PF-Jones
C-Moore (although I think it will be more so Graves with this group)

Te'a, Carter, and Diamond all played together at local gyms and on the AAU circuit (all from Georgia) so they have a lot of on court chemistry. Add that with the fiesty/scrappy Jones who is probably the most athletic player in the conference and Moore's speed and ability to rebound and block shots would make a great unit.

Reynolds is /not/ a 2 guard--not a natural shooter or scorer. However, I would like to see the coaches isolate her in key spots and let her take the ball to the rack, which, with her size, she is good at doing. She did cost us on a couple of key players last year when she failed to block out Walsh (sp) of South Carolina, who got offensive rebounds. Reynolds still has a lot of upside, I think--got a great body for a point guard.

If carter doesn't contribute much on the offensive end then she will kill the team, holly will not bench her because of her "defense" (which is very mediocre). Hopefully holly wakes up and realize carter just isn't that good. If she was on any other top team she would come in & get 15 minutes because of the way she hustles. If she played for he I she would be buried at the end of the bench until she improved her offense

I don't think her offense is that bad because she hit some big shots in games in the past. i just think she needs more confidence in her shot. I would take her out if she don't shoot the ball.

I posted last month that this was the time when a certain percentage of boarders would become negative and of course correct in putting down certain players.

"she will kill the team" "she likes to stand and look" "pry them out of Holly's cold dead hands."

go back one year in the threads and similar comments about B------ and M______

I'm not negative at all. I did state that Jordan stands and look because she does. Thats the truth. Those things need to change in order for us to become a Final Four team. I am behind Holly and the Lady Vols 100%
