Practice begins

I liked Simmons' passion--but she was very overrated as a player. Took too many shots, and her shooting percentage was not good enough to be described as a "scorer." She also shot very badly in just about every big game she played in. Sticklin talented but underachieved. She seemed moody, enigmatic. She could be counted on to play well for one half and very lackluster in the other. Neither of these players had a lot in the way of help; of course Stricklin was forced to play point guard for two years.

Hornbuckle was not "far superior" to Carter. Hornbuckle was a good athlete, like Carter, but no great shakes offensively /at all/. She was a fairly good player on a team with two dominant inside players and so didn't need to carry a heavy load.

Please tell me who the second dominant inside player is other than Parker. Because if you say Anosike ... I'm seriously going to die from laughter.

Anybody who would watch Hornbuckle and Carter and even hesitate to see who the better player was loses my respect. Not to mention Hornbuckle was a top 5 WNBA draft pick.

With Parker and Anosike inside. Dominant. No, Anosike was not a scorer--though she should have been a better offensive player than she was given her size and athleticism. Hornbuckle was a good athlete but I recall her having shooting/offensive issues herself her last two years. We haven't had a legit star since Parker--that's a long time. The bottom line is that team offense--and shooting--have been a problem for this program for a LONG time--maybe 20 years. PS could not coach team offense and neither can Warlick. Anybody can have a decent offense if you've got stars. Can you take 5 good players, no stars, and do it?

What does Parker and Anosike's defense inside have to do with Hornbuckle's offense?

Hornbuckle never did develop into the offensive player she probably should've been, but from what I've been told it was lack of working on her game. I've been told by several people Pat chastised her for not reaching her potential offensively. Even so, she was still never afraid to shoot, and she was always at least making something happen on offense with her ability to drive and set up other players. She had triple-digit assists all four years at UT, and she lead the team in assists three of her four years, and was one assist behind Shanna Zolman for leading her sophomore season -- so she would've lead that year, too, if she hadn't broken her hand and missed several games. Draya is supposedly a gym rat who shoots constantly in practice but is afraid to shoot in games. She isn't good at creating her own offense or creating offense for others. She is a pretty good passer but nowhere NEAR the playmaker Hornbuckle was. Draya just wants to blend in.

And even so, Hornbuckle was STILL able to average just a shade under 10ppg for her career, shot about 43.75% for her career, and yes, she was a superior defensive player to Draya (and rebounder, too).

Can you tell me who was the last coach to actually do that? The most recent one I could think of would be Gary Blair. You can barely say that because Danielle Adams wasn't a slouch herself when it came to scoring or carrying her team. It's rare that you have a superb offense without having a star player. Star players not only provide a scoring threat but they draw attention from the defense and allow better shot options across the floor. Most championship teams have had a "Star" player....so exactly who do you think has taken 5 good players, no stars, and win a Championship?

I'd say Brenda Frese in 2006. She had Coleman, Langhorne, Harper, and Toliver, all of whom were "good" players, but certainly not stars as freshmen and sophomores.

I am beginning to think our starting five will be Deshields, Reynolds, Carter, Russell, and Graves. Holly also had some good things to say about Moore being much improved so she should fill in nicely inside.
Nared out with injury guess we might see freshman Jackson be the main backup at the two three until Nared returns. Of course the point backup is Cooper. Jones was mentioned but not where she would be playing I suspect 3, 4.
Holly was gushing about how athletic this team is and how Diamond is going to be a go to player. Again she said as in past years were working on defense which yikes!! kinda makes me worry if were going to give up 50 and score 48 like this past season.

Left hand, non shooting. After she broke it, she still thought she could practice with it, which is a good sign.

If this is a metacarpal or phalanges, would think she would be cleared to play the Texas game, Nov. 29th, and definitely be ready to go for the west coast trip.
Prayers that it doesn't require any surgery and it really is a simple 3 weaker :)

Big Nicky was a bad ass in the paint :)

she had bricks for hands though, Thank GOD, Hornbuckle grabbed her miss at the end of the LSU game or we'd have never made the FF.

Anosike was a defensive beast--she and Parker shut down opponents inside, and Hornbuckle was a good perimeter defender. I don't recall Anosike having bad hands, but she definitely lacked confidence on offense--almost never took a jump shot until the NCAA tourney her final year. Players like Anosike, who are getting a lot of playing time but lack confidence on offense, should be made to shoot, starting early, until they get comfortable doing it. Graves is another example--last year finally started shooting some jumpers.

Forget jumpshots. We could've built a house with all the bricks she shot on layups over the span of her career. I've never seen a 6'3" player shoot layups from their hip. No telling how many more assists Parker, in particular, could've had if not for her blowing the layup.

I do remember Amb in particular was fond of her missing these layups on the ESPN board. LOL
