Predicting our Final Class Ranking - 2016

With 8 three stars already and only 6 slots left this class will be outside the top 20.

Very discouraging.

It is part of the rule that if a player is going to blueshirt, he cannot sign anything. Seriously. So, if something was signed, then he would have to count towards the current class.

I've not heard CBJ say he is only taking 18. I've heard the number will likely be around there. And that will be based on what I said early. Staying under the 85 man limit. 15 seniors go plus a few leave for the league or transfer. That gets your number close to 20.

I have not been able to locate the "blue shirt" rule in the NCAA's rule book. Can you point me to that if you have located it? I can find no reference to blue shirts at all in the NCAA rule book.

CBJ has not said it publicly. Only in staff meetings to the staff.

Can you show the link where they would have said that on their message boards? Also, if it is top secret, why would they have put it on their message boards to begin with?

if the names of all players signing FAAs or being blue shirted was out, other schools could call them and try to sign them to LOIs. That is why names are not being let out.

JMO I think Bruce and Perry came out to keep the focus off any other blue shirt candidates. So other schools would not try to contact.

those are why recruiting sites supporting UT would not out any candidates the staff would not want out.

First off, what rankings are you looking at 85?

Next, who cares!? Butch is one of the top 5 recruiters in the NATION, and we're moaning and groaning that we have too many players ranked lowly by a bunch of non-football coaches. Alexis Johnson is a 3* on most sites, but he's gonna be a freakin' beast! I don't care if Jeff George drops to a 2*, he's gonna dominate in the redzone. Austin Pope is a perfect tight end for this offense. Corey Henderson has SERIOUS SPEED. TD Marshall, Tim Hart, Devante Brooks - all really good players. Forget the rankings! Butch is gonna get who fits on this team, and we're gonna be competing nationally for what looks like years and years to come. #InButchWeTrust #GBO

Bylaw 15.5.6.3.3 A student-athlete not recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.8) by the institution who receives institutional financial aid (based in any degree on athletics ability) after beginning football practice becomes a counter but need not be counted as an initial counter until the next academic year if the institution has reached its initial limit for the year in question. However, the student-athlete shall be considered in the total counter limit for the academic year in which the aid was first received.

Sure, I'd buy that. But could you point me to their message boards where they said that 7 were blue-shirted? This is the first place I've seen anything near that number.

85 just put together some fun possibilities of where we might finish in this class. I appreciated it.

I've asked mod to post it on 247. Actually asked him how many blue shirts will be in the class of 2016. whatever he responds with I will link.

I don't want to spend a lot of time trying to locate where he has said it but it has stated it multiple times.

My source on it is from the football complex.

(previous would fit a "blue shirt" even if NCAA does not state it?) However, the student-athlete shall be considered in the total counter limit for the academic year in which the aid was first received. (this would be the 85 number)

I'm trying to interpret it. what I have in bold is your interpretation? This rule would be reference to a blue shirt while not stating it is the blue shirt rule, agree?

Yes. I'm not sure where the 'blueshirt' lingo comes from. I don't know that the NCAA manual calls any scholarships by shirt color (red, grey, blue).

Ryan Callahan is writer / mod on 247 site. He is at all football practices / functions reporting on the Vol. Here is his response to m questions.

if you can't read post in the link let me know and I will copy and paste.

...

obviously it is not going to let me post the link to the thread.

here is where he quote my questions and provided answers. Sorry, best I can do.

How many blue shirts do you believe are being carried forward to the 2016 class?

Is Renfro going on scholarship and will he have to be an initial counter with 2015 class?

Thanks my man.

Tennessee only had room for 23 initial counters in the 2015 class and ended up signing 30, so I believe the Vols have seven blueshirts that are being counted forward to the 2016 class. That's why they have been hoping to sign only about 18 in the 2016 class.

Renfro is going to be a walk-on, so he won't have to be an initial counter. For what it's worth, if UT had added any other initial counters, they would have had to count ahead to the 2016 class since the Vols are out of room in their 2015 class.

yeah won't open. Perhaps there are others on Volnation with 247 accounts that can verify. I copied and pasted my post and Ryan's post.

Also asked him about Renfro. He says he is going to be a walk-on and not on scholarship.

Appreciate it. I still don't buy it because it goes against all the NCAA rules, but Callahan is a good insider.

What NCAA rules does it go against exactly? If FAA is signed, players can be openly discussed and still be a blueshirt. Blueshirts can't sign a LOI.

Sounds like Kristy has done her research and I know Larry is plugged in. FWIW, I have a friend who is on the staff who has told me every time I ask that they have 18 initial counters for 2016 and that is the number they're sticking to because if they go over they will have to borrow from the 2017 class and they do not want to do that. I didn't ask him to show his math but his answer has been consistent for months. I'm sure if that once in a decade prospect landed in their laps at the last minute they might change their minds and take a 2017 initial counter but for now that's definitely not the plan.

18 is the number coming from inside the program over and over and over. I don't really understand why people can't just roll with it. :dunno:

Doug Matthews has this year's number at 19, fwiw.

TE 2
DT 3
DE 2
CB 2
OLB 1
QB 1
RB 2
OL 3
WR 3

Well I must apologize, I was wrong about Renfro. Also, someone mentioned in the past week that Giampapa is now on scholarship? When did that happen? Thanks for clearing that up, Larry.

They are Matthews' projections. He doesn't believe Tennessee is likely to sign a safety or middle linebacker in this class.

Yet Warrior is our #1 target according to most everything I've read.. I agree on taking only one linebacker, but we lose two potential NFL players at safety and decide not to recruit players to replace them? That's crazy, Dougie..
