Who knows if any of this comes to pass, but if it does, fair play to Abramovich. Maybe the sale isn’t as cynical as it first seemed, and he really does just want to get the club sold to buyers of his choosing and not left to whatever it’s fate might be if the UK government seized it from him.

People can say whatever bad things they want about Roman the businessman and Oligarch, but Roman the club owner has been incredible. He genuinely loves the club and wants what’s best for it. He’s right to reserve some criticism for everything going on because of his past dealings and affiliations but people also tend to forget about everything he’s done charitable wise with the club and especially during COVID. Hope he finds an owner that can carry on what he’s built.

The impression I've gotten about him is that he did some incredibly dirty things to initially make his money and since he made the money he's done legitimate or even good things with it. It still doesn't really take away the fact that most of his purchases in the West, especially the initial ones, were undertaken to effectively launder the money. At one point, he was Putin's BFF to the point where Putin would run prospective cabinet appointees by him.

Talking about Chelsea, they are down 2-1 in the FA Cup to Luton at the half.

He turned his very small fortune into very large fortune through the loans for shares program in Russia which was highly controversial. He had already made millions at that point but bought an oil company through that program for essentially only like 15% of what it was worth and then later sold it for 1.8 billion. Shady **** for sure.

Like I said though, no one is trying to paint a different image of him then a shrewd and shady businessman at best. Just that he also did incredibly good things for the club and it was because he genuinely loved the club. That’s evident by his statement from earlier today.

At halftime, some of the BBC commentators mentioned that one of the first challenges the new owners would face was building a new ground or renovating Stamford Bridge. I though Chelsea abandoned those plans several years ago. Was it back on the table again?

They did abandon them but I think most people realize that something will still need to be done whether it’s renovations or a new ground. The Bridge hasn’t had any renovations since 1999, or at least major ones.

Happy with the win. Incredibly shaky first half but found the resolve to battle back even with todays bombshell announcement.

They’re in a tough place with that one. Honestly, it’s not in bad shape, just undersized for a club of that stature. Increasing capacity at the current location is going to be difficult, as Stamford Bridge is effectively landlocked on three sides by the District line and Overground to the north and east. Then there’s a huge veterans hospital to the west, although there is a bit of room to expand on that side.

I remember at one point they considered buying the old Battersea Power Station. That would have been a wonderful riverfront location for a stadium, just not ideal for Chelsea. Getting there would have been a nightmare for fans from West London, plus it’s not in Chelsea (although neither is SB if you want to really split hairs).

The room for the renovation was one of the major points that stopped it. I think one of the major sticking points of that though was actually more along the line of they didn’t have adequate space for the foot traffic outside of the stadium as opposed to more of the building room. The room to build was an obvious issue too, but I remember the city being concerned for safe travel into and out of the stadium due to the railroads and space. I haven’t had the pleasure of stepping foot there so I really have no idea what the surrounding area looks like to know how small of an area it is. Whoever the new owners are they will have to figure it all out. Like you said, it’ll be tough.

The good…Everton avoided the three big names left in the FA Cup.

The bad…the big three also avoided each other, so the semifinals are likely to be loaded.

So what was the deal with Evertons minority owner that was a Russian Oligarch? I think I saw they may have already cut ties with him?

Just thought it was strange there hasn’t been much coverage of him, I guess because he’s only a small part owner or whatever it was. Did he get bought out at the start of the war or was this all pre-war that he was cut out?

I don’t know that anybody TRULY knows what his involvement with the club was. He has some sort of ties with our majority shareholder, but never actually owned any shares himself to my knowledge. He, through his company USM, was bankrolling the club at least to some degree through sponsorship, and was also almost certainly involved in financing/outright funding the new stadium. All the USM branding had been removed from Goodison last night though, so it would seem he’s going to step back from the spotlight at least for now. Beyond that, we’ll probably just have to wait and see.

Gotcha. I hadn’t heard anything about it and saw one tweet mentioning him and was just surprised it wasn’t a bigger story and if he truly was a minority shareholder that he was able to sell so quickly or be bought out quickly without media coverage. Being on the sponsor side, even if he was bankrolling, makes more sense on why there wasn’t as much about it.

I hope Ted Lasso keeps Leeds in the PL, they played well today. Several very good chances but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Yea, sitting pretty right now. Just can’t completely choke (asking a lot), but thankfully the other teams around us are helping by also not being consistent

At this point all I want is to stay in the top 4. Chelsea isn’t catching Liverpool or City unless they both or one of them just completely fell off. 3 or 4 is just fine by me to keep CL football next year.

Question, do the top 4 enter the CL in the same round?

All of todays MX Liga matches have been postponed.

Concacaf Statement regarding the acts of violence that occurred in Queretaro, Mexico

Miami, FL - The shocking acts of vandalism and violence that occurred last night in Queretaro, Mexico, have no place in football or society. The thoughts of everyone at Concacaf are with the victims of these awful events, and their families.

Concacaf wholly condemns these types of behaviors. We call on the local authorities to fully investigate these criminal acts, and to hold accountable those who have tarnished our game.

The Confederation also believes that strong football sanctions must be applied and will provide any necessary support to the FMF and Liga MX as they investigate.

Yes, they are all in the group stage no matter what. I saw yesterday that UEFA is looking to change formatting of the UCL in 2024 which would essentially create a table and play 10 games, and the (8?) top teams automatically move into the knockout stages and then there is a playoff for the final 8 spots of knockout round. After that I think it’s normal structure. Idk, I didn’t read the whole article so not sure of the exact specifics.

What happened???

Never mind. Googled it. Thugs beat up everyone they could find that was wearing other team's shirt. At 62 minute mark of a 1-0 game!
