Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

I had some friends that participated in this beers around the world contest. The way it worked was you had a card with all the different countries. Every time you drank one from that country, you got a stamp. They said it was fun, especially working your way through the good beers, but some they said were awful, like from some of the Asian countries. If you made it through all the beers of the world(Not sure the time frame if it was a month or year or what) you got a shirt and your name was engraved on a plaque in the establishment which was considered an honor.

There are definitely some countries where you have to try a few before you find one you like… and I love trying different beers. When I was in Thailand it took me a couple days to find one that I liked. Singha is one that you can find in stores in the US, but I didn’t care for it. There was a beer that started with a X that was pretty good and then I drank mostly a beer called Leo the rest of the time I was there. That one was pretty good. Couldn’t find any local good beers when I was in China.

Yikes. Chelsea draws Manchester City for the 3rd round of the Carabou Cup. That’s an, unfortunate, drawing 😂

Both sides will probably won’t play a starting strong side though. Who knows.

Didn’t see when it was announced that the 3rd round of the cup is the week before the World Cup. So highly doubt any World Cup bound players will play that week for any teams… at least not a substantial role.

I know the Total Wine near me has a TON of global beer options. I honestly might take a look there before the WC and see if I could even get them all. I also think that unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to buy singles though. Would have to buy full packs.

Is that bad?

Here is a couple of questions for you fine folks.

1: Do you refer to these symbols as logos, crests, shields, emblems, etc.? I have heard many answers from many folks.

2: Which of these symbols are your favorite? There are some big hitters on that list. Allegiances aside, purely aesthetically, which do you like the looks of?

"Play for the badge on the front of the shirt and they'll remember the name on the back."

Aesthetically I’d have to say PSG with the Eiffel Tower. It’s simple, clean, artistic, modern, nice colors and easy to identify.

I’ve always called it a badge. Crest is another one that I hear enough of but mainly badge is what I hear and use.

For me it’s Juventus. Idk why as it’s the simplest out of all of them. I think it’s just so clean and simple and if you aren’t a soccer fan you won’t know it. A close second for me would be Inter Milan. Same concept.

According to FiveThirtyEight's Soccer Power Index, Group A (Ajax, Liverpool, Napoli, Rangers) is the most difficult group in this year's competition, followed by Group C (Bayern, Barca, Inter, Viktoria Plzen) and Group E (Milan, Chelsea, Salzburg, Zagreb). The easiest group, by quite some margin, is Group H (PSG, Juve, Benfica, Maccabi Haifa).

I did this when I still lived in Memphis a lifetime ago. It was drink all of the imports. I got my name on the bar at one of them and a T-shirt at the other.

I like FiveThirtyEight for sports analytics. They have some good stuff.

Their rankings come down to the last team from Pot 4 for their reasonings of Group A over Group C. If you look at their own power rankings of top clubs, Group C has the higher weight between Pots 1,2,3. Looking at just the top 3 teams of the groups, the average position for Group C is 5.3, while Group A is 10.3. The reason they are giving the overall grade is because Rangers are a much better team than Viktoria, which makes sense and I can agree with. One thing sports analytics can’t do though is see context. Ajax just lost their coach, their best defender, and are about to possibly lose their 100M winger (all to Man United I might add). If the wingers transfer does happen, that overall weight of top 3 teams will fall as AJAX ranking will likely slip a bit.

It’ll be interesting to see if these rankings would change the week before group stages start when teams are locked in personnel wise and have played more than a handful of games.
