Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

Oh, that wouldn't surprise me at all. I think City are a better team overall and I'm surprised the Gunners have been on top of the table for this long. There is obviously a lot of time and games left, and you never know with injuries, form, and such. So I'll be happy while we're competing for a title - been a while since we've been in the discussion this much into the season. Obviously the main goal this year was European (champions league) football and gunning for the title is a huge improvement from years past
Agreed. Even if they can’t hold off City, they still have a squad capable of winning the Europa League, should finish Top 4 with ease, won both NL Derbies and will finish well above Spurs. That’s a massively successful season and gives them a lot to build on, especially with the uncertainty surrounding City’s future and many of the other big clubs a bit of a mess right now.

This comment has me thinking, what club even would qualify as “hipster”? Wrexham maybe? I don’t think any PL club fits the description.
One of my assistant coaches is the biggest soccer hipster I have ever met, exhaustingly so sometimes. I asked him this question and his answer was about 18 minutes long. Most soccer hipsters choose their clubs based on the clubs activism, history, status.

Every PL team is out, they pretty much are the establishment. It can’t be a club everyone supports or that chases trophies all the time, it needs to be niche.

Dortmund used to be the king, then became too popular. Now some of the more popular hipster clubs are Dulwich Hamlet in lower league England, St Pauli in the Bundesliga 2, and Union Berlin in Bundesliga 1.

Arsenal are not a hipster team at all, and who do you support?
Maybe it’s more fair to say the monicker applies to most US supporters of premier league teams? My disdain for Arsenal is primarily bc I loathe the Kroenke organization as they represent the my least favorite elements of ownership with zero loyalty to fans, using teams as ATM’s, putting taxpayers on the hook for their capital investment while keeping the profits, etc.

I intentionally steer clear of supporting specific Premier League teams because I don’t want the emotional baggage I have with my teams and want to enjoy the game. I do support a particular League One team because of a distant familial tie. Unfortunately, I get to stream only a couple of games at that level.

Do hipsters even like soccer?

In England for the PL? Doubt very many. I will say that after going to quite a few NashvilleSC games that there are actually a good amount of hipsters that follow either NashvilleSC, or MLS in general. Maybe US Soccer is still niche enough that hipsters won’t turn away from it? Idk.

This is probably true. I’ve never been able to get invested in a team here in the US, but haven’t people in this thread mentioned that there’s an element within some of the American fanbases that tends to be a bit “gatekeepery”?

Definitely feels that way. It’s easy to follow a team and go to games but the supporter groups is where it gets a little “gatekeepery”. I follow NashvilleSC enough to know the players and go to games every so often, but I’m not nearly invested the way I am with Chelsea and other leagues.

Not a lot of context, but looks like it’s the form over the last 5 games. How many expected goals (xG) the teams had, and how many goals they actually converted
What is this?

Yeah, what Doc said. xG can be a bit controversial, like a lot of stats honestly. They basically take a “goal scoring opportunity” and convert it into how good of an opportunity it is. .31% chance is better than a .13% chance, etc. If it’s clear as day should have been a goal it’s 1.0. So basically they are saying of those teams goal scoring opportunities they had an aggregate chance of xG amount of goals. And then the second part is the actual goals.

You can see that City and United have been clinical. They’ve still created a lot of good opportunities but they have also capitalized on some lower opportunities. That’s why they are above their xG. Meanwhile, Chelsea has 3 goals. 😂

Understandable, given the magnitude of his error last weekend.

But…considering he hasn’t refereed on the field in the PL for a couple years and was just pulling part-time VAR duty in his retirement, he seems like an easy sacrificial lamb to try and quiet some of the outrage. They need to start holding the guys who are actually active referees accountable.
