Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

I admit I know absolutely nothing about soccer..............but I guess I'm good luck

But before the season started, a co-worker from London told me to pick a Premiere League team since he's now a Titan fan.

I took a couple of on-line "quizzes"(all gave the same answer) and did a quick history dive and picked:

Nottingham Forrest.

You gotta have a team to support to get bit by the Premier League bug.
Looks like you got the better deal between you and your coworkers].

Does anyone actually like the new UCL format? As a LFC supporter, I'm still trying to figure out if LFC will get the winner of 9 vs 24 or if they'll get the lowest ranked survivor from the 8 play-in games. I assume they can't play an English team until the quarterfinal round? Are the top 8 guaranteed to have the return leg of the round of 16 at home? Talk about an unnecessarily complicated and un-inspiring competition.

There's so many games that the stakes for any single game are much lower. For example, City have played terribly this year, and yet, they still might qualify for the play-in game.

The one change I do like about this format is that teams can longer “fail upward” by going out in the group stage. In the old format, City would likely have ended up dropping down to Europa League after finishing third in their group. Then they’d be in an easier competition where they likely run roughshod over everyone, and backdoor their way into CL qualification next season, even though they are far from guaranteed qualifying on league position. That part is good. The rest of it, especially the part where everyone doesn’t play the same schedule, sucks.

I feel like the Spanish teams not named Madrid or Barca have mastered this strategy. (Sevilla, Athletico, Villareal, etc.)

The top half of the table is so tight right now. From 5th to 10th it’s only a 5 point difference. Difference between 10th and 4th only a 7 point difference. Qualifying for a European competition (any of the 3) is still in play for over half the league with ~15 games left to play. Would be a bad time to stumble for a few games if you are one of the teams in the top half. Could stumble from Top 4 or Top 5 to middle of the table in just 2-3 games.

What competition does 15th qualify for?

Fantastic insight into how Tottenham are run for people who don’t follow the club very closely. Been this way since I’ve been following them (2011-2012 season was my first): ENIC has done a great job of growing us into a global brand but they don’t seem to grasp the fact that elite clubs don’t just make a lot of money, they also win trophies on a regular basis.

Some highlights that stood out to me from the video:

Spurs’ wage bill is 42 percent of their revenue, the lowest ratio in the Premier League.

Spurs are the most profitable club in the history of the Premier League (according to this) and only have 2 League cups to show for it (only 1 since ENIC have been in charge).

Levy is the highest paid CEO in the Premier League (and we are definitely not the richest club).

Question for those who follow CL/EL clubs because I can’t be bothered to dig through all the details of the new, more confusing format.

Is the tournament seeded for the knockout stages, or will there be random draws like had always been done in the past?

I can’t remember if I heard anything about seeding or whether or not it mattered where in the top 8 you finished.

They just had the draw for the playoff.

So it appears the whole goal was to give the big clubs a leg up and make sure a totally random draw didn't knock any of them out too early. But...jokes on them. One of either Real Madrid or City isn't even going to make the R16.

So what about after all this initial seeding? Does it continue for each round, or was it just this once? Like, assuming Liverpool and Barca both go through, will they be protected from playing each other in the QF?

It's all very complicated and much more confusing that the old format.

I am not a fan of this format.

They keep making it worse every few years.

I liked the old format with the away goal advantage

I personally liked it better once they scrapped away goals. My biggest gripe with it was actually that the away goals rule continued to apply even if the second leg went to extra time. Home teams really couldn’t afford to go try and get a goal, because if they conceded, they had no way back. Also, in a system where an away goal effectively counts double, it’s not really fair for one team to get 120 minutes of that, and the other only 90. It would have just about been okay if it only applied to the two 90 minute games, and then the teams just played straight up for the 30 minutes of extra time.

But either way, I much preferred the old format where it was just group play and then the knockout stage.

agreed on the older format. I think I personally liked the old format without the away goals, but I’d even take the away goals format over this. I like there’s more games in this new format but I wish they would have just used the extra teams to add a 5th team to each group and then expand knockouts by another 2 teams or however many needed. # of games would have been similar I think and still could have kept the old format of groups.

They had to do something in response to the super league and address some of the complaints (cough, money, cough) but I think they could have kept it close to the original format, just expanded, and still appeased some concerns from clubs.
