It really is mind boggling, and a nuclear option for Ukraine. Probably the only thing restraining Ukraine is the negative effect it would have on European countries if they cut the lines. From the article it sounds like Russia doesn't care about damaging the lines that Ukraine is trying to protect.

It's like hedging bets. European countries know what Ukraine could do, and Ukraine for the time being realizes they have those countries over a barrel and want their support. In essence they need each other for the time being. If Europe turns their back and the Russians look to capture Ukraine, that's the time for Ukraine to blow the lines ... just like people look at Putin as a nuclear threat if they back him into a corner. As far as I know Ukraine has never threatened with the gas lines, and Putin has threatened with his nukes ... that makes Ukraine the bigger of the two.
