Private Sector screwing up

I get what you're saying. When it was the only game in town it was a huge success but when forced to compete with the private sector if failed miserably, laid off workers and lost $7bil. I can now see why you advocate more gov't programs
we were arguing whether or not it has been successful.... thanks for admitting it was...

and i have no problem with the private sector being the main entity in most things, but the government does have a role in providing regulation...

individuals have laws placed against us, and yet, that doesn't bother people. i just don't see how businesses are any different.

the USPS's first incarnation was established by Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia in 1775 by decree of the Second Continental Congress. The Post Office Department was created from this in 1792 as part of the United States Cabinet, then was transformed into its current form in 1983 under the Postal Reorganization Act.

Employing 596,000 workers and over 218,000 vehicles, it is the second-largest civilian employer in the United States (after Wal-Mart) and the operator of the largest civilian vehicle fleet in the world.

The post office has been one heck of a failure

anybody can quote wikipedia

you're not getting my point at all.... In lets say 1903, what was your option to communicate with somebody long distances. Travel on your own... Maybe use the phone... or use the postal service.

And from about 1775 to when the UPS's of the world started and technology advanced to where written mail wasn't needed, it was a HUGE success story. So, if you look at it through present terms, yes the post office is a failure. But throughout the majority of its history, it has not been.

I get what you're saying. When it was the only game in town it was a huge success but when forced to compete with the private sector if failed miserably, laid off workers and lost $7bil. I can now see why you advocate more gov't programs

It provided a necessity for its time.

But like most government run operations, when it comes to business it can't compete. But also unlike the government, FedEx,UPS.... have to make a profit. The government will keep operating and pull the money from somewhere else.

kinda like a casino, when the table starts running low on chips here comes the cart to load em up again.

could care less either way... since it's a dangerous job, we should just say oh well??

they do plenty to keep the guys safe but they are drilling into flammable materials. Accidents happen even with the best safety codes around. The guys working there know how to stay safe and know the risks but feel the paycheck is worth it.

Thank you... That's all I was looking for.

that's true... still bet they find something wrong

This was one of your more absurd responses.

If that field isn't doing everything in its power to keep the employees safe, then yes the government should step in.

NO!

The employees should have enough freakin sense to walk down the road.

I have no reason to trust the government to keep me safe on the job. None whatsoever. That is my job, not the government.

YES!!!

Because people got families to feed, businesses can just take advantage of that and provide little to no safety. Give me a break... If the company isn't taking care of its employees, the government has every right to take care of its voters, its citizens.

You are forgetting that there are extremes. Sure, if a company does nothing to keep their employees safe that is a bad situation. On the other hand, the government could mandate that an employer spend 100% of its resources keeping its employees safe. Neither are good because they do not maximize the benefit to society. Somewhere in the middle benefits are maximized. The good thing is that free markets most commonly work themselves out. If a company spends too much on safety, they are unable to compete in price with other companies that don't. If a company spends too little on safety, they can't make products because employees will stop working their in favor of safer working environments. All-in-all, the market works itself out in these cases.

and you proved the USPS was a viable entity in 1815 when there was no competition. Congrats
the argument was whether or not it was successful... only recently has it not been. If I start a company and it lasts for 200-something years, pretty sure I'll take that everytime
