Props for Johnny Majors

When ever Dooley left, I actually thought he left it better off than when he started, but now I don't believe that is true. I thought we had a talented team Dooley's last year, but after this season I realized how depleted our talent and depth level was. But, back on subject, it is nice to see Majors around the program again.

What demons ? I know what you are referring to but they do not exist . John could not have returned to Pitt with all those demons you refer to. Ben Byrd cleared all the demon stuff up with a great article in the KJ years ago.

If you don't think Majors had frequent dates with the bottle, then I don't know what to tell you. It was widely known around campus, people ran into him fairly often at bars, and even recruits and their families began to talk about it.

As far as his return to Pitt, I believe he went 11-32 in his three year stint their... which is why I said previously that we never would have one a championship at UT.

I love the guy for what he did for my university... both as a player and as a coach. But he clearly had some issues during his final years at UT.

Both Majors and Fulmer were similar in the end in that both were products of systems. Johnny was a CEO type coach so he relied upon assistant coaches for everything. He was out of touch with the aspects of (modern) football. Fulmer was a product of the system in place at Tennessee when he took over. If Fulmer had gone any where else his success would have been the same.

Not to excuse Dooley's performance. He had some fleeting moments, and blew some opportunities to turn things around. He took the wrong job, and you can't blame him for accepting the offer. He needed more time as a head coach in FCS to iron out his general lack of experience before coming to UT or any other major program on that level. The deck was stacked against him, and he couldn't figure out how to deal it. Didn't have the experience to deal with FBS media....etc...etc...

Mostly agree but I thought dealing with the media was one of the very few things he was good at.

I've seen Coach Majors speak a couple of times in the last 10 years, he's never mentioned CPF, and came off as such a gentlemen.
He was a helluva player, who should've won the Heisman, and then a very good coach, that just couldn't quite get us where we needed (but go back and look, the cupboard was not bare when Phil took it, those teams were freaking stocked)
I wish he would let it all go with CPF, but that's easy to say sitting from the living room, I suppose. It's great to see him around again.

lET'S FACE FACTS. Phillip Fulmer placed a knife in Johnny Majors back and twisted it several times while Johnny was sick. No doubt !!! If I was Johnny Majors I would probably go to jail for assault. However, Johnny is probably handling it the best way he can. This is strictly my opinion and I respect yours if it differs.

Let's face facts. This is bull ****!!!

I love how you open with "let's face facts" and then close with "this is strictly my opinion".

I dont care what was in some article, I am talking about what I knew from the people who were around him every day - I mean he kept a flask on the practice field for goodness sakes. That doesnt mean he still has those problems but he did back then and I think that you have to measure both the good and bad when you look at his legacy. Very happy to have him around the program though.

If Phil had won the NC in 93-95 Johnny's grudge might hold a little more water. Phil was a good coach in his own right. They both are VFL's and should be highly regarded by this fan base, IMO.

I seem to remember Majors saying in 93 or 94 that he had felt that he had recruited the talent that could win an NC in 93 but Fulmer fell short of that accomplishment. Sounded a bit like sour grapes, and probably an overstatement of the talent. Truth is we'll never know what ole Johnny could have accomplished in the 90s because he burned some bridges with administration that made it difficult to keep him around. I think he might have contended for national title in 1985 had Tony R not been injured. Seeing what Daryl Dickey led Vols were able to do to Miami, who knows what the remainder of that season would have looked like with Tony healthy and sober.

The only blemish on Dickey at qb was a 6-6 tie to a ranked Ga. Tech team. The best TRob could have done was winning one more game. We had a loss and a tie earlier that season with TRob at the controls.

I remember an article in the paper as quoting Majors after the Orange Bowl blow out as saying he woukd have won a NC by then.

He may not have won the NC in '93 but he did leave a tremendous amount of talent when he was fired.
