A legendary head coach stepped down from his program. He had recently won a national title, one of many in his career. He became the athletic director. He hired a head coach that had been on his national championship winning staff. That new head coach, despite having learned from the master, had no success. He was fired after 2 years and replaced by a guy who had the team contending for the national title again 2 years later.
The school was Tennessee. The legendary coach was Robert Neyland. He let Harvey Robinson go after two bad years and brought in Bowden Wyatt. Robinson was Neyland's friend. The General called firing him after two years the hardest football related thing he had to do. But the program came first. Neyland saw he had made a mistake and corrected it even though it caused pain. Is Phil man enough to do that?
He is obviously no Neyland, Neyland would probably have despised the behind the scenes politics Phil has pulled over the years. But will Phil admit he is wrong and do the right thing when he needs to or will he drag it out like he did with Sanders? Phil liked having Randy around to take heat and knew he was no threat to look for a raise from OC to HC, like Phil himself did some 15 years prior.
