There is an enormous deal of art commissioned by governments. For some artists, they would not be who they are without govt funding (Michelangelo, Mozart, Beethoven, etc.)

Religion (right, left and middle) is regularly denigrated in the US with impunity. Services have been interrupted including splattering blood to make some idiotic point. To my knowledge, no one has spent more than a night in jail or been charged with more than a misdemeanor. Comparing the cynical use of the Greek Orthodox church by Putin to foster nationalism to the relationship of organized religion in the US to our own government is fatuous and demonstrates an inability to differentiate between cultures and political systems. It also offers further proof that LG lacks the minimum cognitive ability to remain a poster on this board and should be tested immediately to determine if he can emit a brain wave.

Doesn't take away from their integrity as artists, but Michelangelo painted for the Pope, Mozart and Beethoven composed for the Viennese aristocracy. Would we know these names here in 2012 without their government commissions? Maybe not...
