Question on how Vol fans feel about "beating Florida"

It is simply amazing that our fans dont understand the importance of those games. A win over Bama is great, its fun, it feels good. But in the end it does not mean as much as a win over a division foe. And the converse is also true - a loss to a division foe is twice as bad as a loss to Bama. A loss to Bama is one loss. A loss to a division foe means you have to win 2 more than them to over take them in the standings. Considering there are only 8 games to do it and one is a loss to a division foe, you only have 5 games to overtake them and have to pray to God they lose somewhere down the road.

My hatred for Alabama isn't logical.

Dont get my statement wrong - I understand your hatred and share your hatred for those cousin phukers but in the grand scheme of things called SEC football, our game against Bama is just a single game. The games against UF, UGA, USCe, Ky, Van, and Mizz have more meaning regarding the landscape of standings and have more impact.

You are correct of course. All I know is that when we lose to Alabama, I feel sick in the gut in addition to being angry. When we lose to the others, I just feel angry.

It seems that when we have more talent than Florida and we are playing well enough to win, we lose confidence.

Sorta like someone walking a high wire, then they pause and look down. Then they are struck with doudt.

It is the same way in the Florida games that we play. Think for a moment of all of the times that we have had them beat, then we fell apart.

One season, at the Swamp, we had them beat at 1/2 time by 21 points and then they beat us 62 - 35.

One season, we had them beat, and Colquitt threw a pass, rather than punt the ball. I missed the game because I was in Iraq, but I heard about it.

Last season, we had them beat, then Sal messed up things and we let a scat back have the game of his career.

In 1999, we had them beat. End of regulation in the 4th quarter, Jamaal runs to the wrong hole and doesn't get in the end zone, and they end up winning, as time expires.

So much inaccurate information in this post, it's laughable. :eek:lol:

UF trailed UT by 9 at the half in 1995 (30-21), not by 21. The largest lead UT had at any point during the game was 16 (23-7 and 30-14).

At no point during the 2005 game did UT "have us beat". UT never led past the first quarter.

Last season UT quit after UF tied the game. At no point did UT "have us beat" with over 20 minutes left to play...UT packed it in with 20 minutes to play. And Trey Burton weighs 225 pounds...he's not a scat back.

I'm not sure what you were smoking in 1999. UF led 23-7 at one point in the second half, and Jamal Lewis' failed 4th down run took place near mid-field, not the goal line. Time didn't expire until UF got the ball back and ran out the clock.

Or than that, everything else you posted was 100% correct.

Tennessee never had the lead in 2005.

Tennessee hasn't had a lead in Gainesville since 2003

You look at college football like I look at baseball. That's fine, and I can certainly understand your logical approach; however, college football for me and a lot of other fans is something that transcends the confines of reason. For me, it's closer to a religion than a sport. Beating a program like Alabama or LSU is something that I try to will to reality with dreams of glory. There's no way a win against Vandy, Mizzou, Kentucky, or South Carolina could mean as much to me. Maybe if we start to have consistent success I will be able to step back and be logical, but right now I'm desperate for a big win.

I'd say without a doubt that Bama is UT's chief rival. However, for me, I grew up watching UT beat Bama. When I was a student at UT the Bama game was honestly kind of an afterthought. It was Florida, Florida, Florida.

If I could beat one or the other I'd probably say Bama just because I know that would ruin their chance at a National Title. If it wasn't a "screw Bama over" win (assuming they have a loss coming into the 3SIO) I'd rather beat Florida.

The streak of losses stings.

I only gave him partial credit because in 1995, from what I remembered, at one point it did feel like UT was going to run away with it. I'm guessing that was when it was 30-14; then again I was a lot younger then. I even thought UT was up more at halftime than just 31-20.

The other 3, yes he was way off. I do think there was a point after UF failed on the fake punt that had UT scored a TD, they would have definitely taken control, but in no way did UT have the game won at any point.

2005 and 1999, I have no idea what games he was watching.

Another problem (IMO) about the UT/UF series, is on top of UT only winning 6 of the last 23 meetings, UT hasn't put a beatdown on UF since 1992.

The first 2 of the 6 wins, UT dominated UF; the other 3 have been close, and 2003 was a 14 point win but I wouldn't call it a beatdown by any means.

I wish I had a World engine like in Man of Steel and at half time in the Swamp I would start that sucker up.

The three teams that I think are equally as important to beat are 1)Bama, 2)Florida and 3)Auburn.

Those are the only teams in the SEC which UT has an all time losing record against. Numbers 2 and 3 only passed us in our slow downward spiral since 2001.

Being married to a Gator I have to say out loud that 1 is our biggest rival and that I will enjoy beating them again (even though when I was in college at UT we never lost to them and were 2-3 against UF).

On here I can admit that there is nothing I want more than UT to gain some traction against the Gators. I throw up in my mouth every time my wife puts on something that says Gators on it. To her credit, when UT and Florida aren't playing she solidly pulls for UT. It was intolerable in my house when Tebow played. Ugh...

EDIT: We now technically have a losing record against Mizzou. But, in 116 years we only played them once so I don't count that. Should Mizzou win this year, making us 0-2 against them, they will be added to the list.
