Rae Burrell Update from Kellie

I’m not losing sleep over it and we are winning without her (although obviously we would all love to have her back) but my point is that we know exactly what is going on with the national player of the year but not with Rae. I could totally understand if it was mental but it was an injury that we all saw. I agree with the poster who said they think Rae is done for the year. The only thing that makes sense is that she has been told that and having a tough time accepting it. Probably rehabbing and trying to prove the experts wrong. She’s tough as nails and I could picture her refusing to accept that she’s done. Don’t @ me. I pray I’m wrong!

Some schools, coaches and players carry the HIPPA/privacy thing to an absurd extreme. In most cases there is a logical
reason to keep a /conventional/ sports injury secret. If it's something other than a conventional injury--some mental issue or an addition
issue or somesuch, then, yes, it's understandable for the player/coach/institution to keep the matter private. But for ankle, knee, shoulder, etc.
injuries of a type that we hear about every day from teams and players in all sports all over the world, I'm not sure why some want to be secretive
about it.
What is HIPPA? It certainly has nothing to do with this discussion. Could it be that you meant HIPAA??
No wonder you have the views that you do since you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about!

Uh, I thought it was HIPPA too but I also understood the intent. One would think that I would know better after signing so many of them. I don't claim to know anything extraordinary but I've been around a lot of very different people in my life and everyone of them had the same characteristic......the innate need to know everything even when it's none of their business. Secret information drives some people crazy. I get it. I also understand the desire to sometimes protect information when there is a strong possibility that an injury will be used to their future disadvantage. Another reason to withhold information is to protect the teams psyche. They still have not fully recovered from Rae's loss and didn't play well offensively after that. The team is trending well now and it's important to keep that trend line going up. Bad news, if there is any (and I swear I don't know anymore than the average Joe) would be a counterproductive shock.

"Fishy" would be something like Rae has not been seen by anyone and Coach Harper reported, "Oh, she is fine trust us (as with the Chinese govt. and pro tennis player Peng Shuai). So, what exactly would be "fishy" here, which implies some kind malicious decepti

Odds are she had a set-back in her rehab and now they are having to re-evaluate matters. Perhaps Rae or her family want to keep the exact nature of the injury private. She will be back when she is back, (if she is back for the LVs).

I think the coach IS being deceptive. If we take her comment as 100% truthful then (based on her comment) she doesn’t even know what’s going on with the injury. I understand player discretion at releasing info, and despite fans wanting to know it’s really not our business…. But it is the coach‘s business. Do we believe Kelly really has no idea what’s going on ?

Coaches do this all the time. They leave the details of the medical status to doctors and trainers and don't want to speak out of turn on injury statuses. What she knows that the Rae has not been cleared to play and will await a further eval. from the medical staff to give a more complete update on Rae's status.

Exactly what more do you need to know and why? Materially what changes if you know the precise diagnosis, Will your knowledge of the event help Rae return faster?

Fill in the blanks if you must, Here is what I heard (from the voices in my head), Rae's knee has been possessed by a demon. The training staff thought the exorcism had worked but alas the demon was just playing dead. So, they are bringing in a new exorcist and we will see if the demon can be expunged.

Well I hope this demon exorcism doesn’t include surgery

Maybe she went to Ballad Health like a friend of mine did. They determined that is wasn’t COVID and no further action was available. So they sent him home with a fluttering heartbeat and pneumonia.

If doctors don't know how well the injury has healed up to now, how could the coach? If doctors don't yet know what the chances are that she heals without surgery, then how could the coach? If doctors don't know whether surgery should be ruled out or not, or whether it should be ruled in, how could the coach know? The idea that CKH is being deceptive is without merit.

Everyone calls it ‘HIPPA’ in conversation; then people who aren’t actively involved with it spell it the way they heard it. No big deal. Anyone will understand what you are talking about whether in verbal conversation or written communication.

So I got the acronym wrong--I stand by the rest of my post. Some schools and some players and coaches take the privacy thing too seriously.

HIPAA does not apply in this context. HIPAA applies to healthcare professionals, workers and facilities and sets standards for the handling and dissemination of private patient health information.

So her doctor and medical team are bound by HIPAA not to share her private health information, but that’s where it’s reach stops. If Rae were to tell a staff member or coach who spilled the beans it would be unkind and improper without her consent, but not illegal.

I hate to disappoint everyone, but Jon did say, in response to a question in the pre-game coaches talk in the Ray Mears Room today, that they did expect Rae back this season. Obviously, he couldn't be very specific and a bad diagnosis could change things, but encouraging for Rae, none the less.

It isn’t any of the fanbase’s business! It’s a personal medical issue, and if the player wants nothing released then the University can say nothing! It has nothing to do with attitude, dimwit; it’s the LAW!!

CKH said up front it wasn't an ACL injury, which is actually a release of information - albeit a skimpy one. Perhaps you should chill out, maybe be less prone to lashing out at others, and go easy on the exclamation points. Being a "Guru" must put too much pressure on you.

It was easy to read through the lines if you were paying attention and understand that the date they expected is the beginning of the SEC schedule. I hope she gets to return if not get well soon and hope she comes back next season.

Brilliant question. Reminds me of the ones the demons whisper every time I read one of those all too frequent posts and threads bashing another team or coach: Precisely how does this help our team improve?

At the beginning of this year, Rae said something like this is my last first practice. Her mindset sounded like this is her last year to play in college. Don’t know if her injury, or how great the team is playing, giving next year high hopes, will change her mind, but a mindset is hard to change.

HIPAA very well could apply in this context if her care providers are covered entities. If they aren’t, then FERPA does still apply, and any release of medical information by the University or a University representative (staff member, coach, trainer, etc.) which wasn’t authorized by the student athlete most certainly is illegal!

Mud, in medical terms it's called a foot injury....In layman's terms (you, me, and us) it's called a foot injury....
