IDK, Pearl has been in Detroit recruiting a kid for next year and prolly talked to Ramar as well. I'm sure we have offered, but even if we haven't, if he committed, we'd take him.

Here are some tidbits brought up on another board about Ramar Smith and Jarvis Hill and their visits:

Hill and Ramar in town April 7-9th

Dead Period Begins April 10th

Spring Signing day April 12th

Both get home late on the 9th and then opposing coaches may never be able to get ahold of them because of the dead period, both sign with UT and call the other coaches recruiting them and tell them they are all UT, and there isn't a thing an opposing coach can do because of the dead period.

That poster believes that we will take both, obviously he thinks that Passley is done for and we won't keep the scholly for next year.

I'm confused on Passley. I thought he was a walk on and a RS and we had not accounted for a scholly for him last year. We had 5 to give for the 2006 class with or without Passley. Right???? Bottom line, would someone 'splain if Passley getting busted will result in an additional scholly? If you know for sure, I' be greatly appreciative.

Regular poster from Hoopsville here. Passley is/was on scholarship. Passley was forced to sit out a year, but I'm not sure if that constitutes an automatic redshirt. Even if he did redshirt, I'm pretty sure he still counts against the scholarship count for this year because he still practiced with the team. If he gets the boot, I'm pretty sure that opens up another scholly for this recruiting season.

If Passley is gone, I wouldn't be surprised if both Ramar Smith and Jarvis Hill become Vols. As for Ramar Smith, a rumour recently started that he is a done deal for the Vols. I think there may be credibility to it, because Pearl and his staff are in Detroit watching/recruiting Corperryale Harris (#8 PG in class of '07). Harris has mentioned Ramar Smith as one of his top choices for players in his state that he would most like to play on the same team with in college. Furthermore, Harris' interest in Tennessee became known right around the same time the rumour that Smith was to become a Vol began. It could be coincidence, but I think it likely that there is a connection. Also, it is worth noting that Harris has no interest in Arkansas. If Ramar Smith were still considering Arkansas, it would make sense that Harris would also show interest in the Hogs. But between the two, he only has interest in UT, which tells me where Ramar is likely to end up.

The Vols are courting four guards in hopes of bolstering the backcourt next season and finding an adequate replacement for point guard C.J. Watson.

UT has its eyes on a 6-2 Michael Taylor from Chippola Junior College in Marietta, Fla. Taylor is from Milwaukee and likely would have signed with Pearl at Wisconsin-Milwaukee had he had the grades.

Ramar Smith, a 6-2 combo guard from Detroit, has an official visit set for April 8-9. He originally committed to Connecticut.

The Vols are also looking at teammates from Bridgton (Maine) Academy – Jarvis Hill and Keaton Grant. Hill, who is from Starkville, Miss., originally committed to UT under Buzz Peterson, signed at Auburn, but didn’t qualify. Grant, from Kissimmee, Fla., signed with Missouri but didn’t qualify.

Of the four, Smith and Taylor are considered the better point guards.

UT has signed two combo guards: Marques Johnson and Josh Tabb.

If UT gets Smith and Passley's scholarship deos indeed open up then most likelt UT will sign a Forward Prospect, leaving Hill out.

UT going JUCO seems right now a last resort

Guards in order
1. Ramar Smith(may have core, test score ???)
2. Jarvis Hill
3. Keaton Grant
4. Michael Taylor

Wings
1. Kiwan Smith (Grade Issues)
2. Lawrence Gilbert (Most Likely to get Passley's scholarship if available)

67, I'd switch Gilbert and Smith. Alot of the experts say they'd take Gilbert 9 times out of 10. I'll bring a quote.

Gilbert is a better ball-handler, defender, passer and shooter. I'd take Gilbert nine times out of ten. Good looking wing forward. Smith has had the same concerns surrounding his game for the last three years.

That may be true but UT likes Smith better but the grade problem(not very likely to qualify) will cause them to put the heat on Gilbert

Rumors are he is a lock to UT.

I don't think we are higher on Smith. I think we were but we've virtually dropped him from the equation because of how far he has to go with his grades. Gilbert has really shot up the rankings and would be a perfect fit at the 3 for our system.

We would rather have Kiwan Smith than Lawrence Gilbert. Grades may prevent that, but if could choose between the two, the staff would definitely take Kiwan.

There are some positive "rumblings" starting to be heard about Ramar Smith and Tennessee.

Where have you seen that the staff still wants Kiwan more than Lawrence? All I have seen is that we have dropped Kiwan. We hadn't evaluated Gilbert when we were first recruiting Kiwan, now that we have, we are in hotter pursuit of Gilbert.

Brent also said that Kiwan is higher on the talent board than Gilbert but was not an option because of grades.

He also said he believes we will only take one more player and we want a ball handling guard. Our main options are Ramar Smith and Jarvis Hill, Smith is the easy A choice here.

I'll say this about Hoopmasters and Prepstars. Some really good college coaches really respect the guys running both publications. Hoopmasters, run by Van Coleman, has numerous updates each day. I know I've been one of the chief critics of recruiting "gurus" on this board, but these two websites really do a good job. For information, I think Hubbs is a quality source. He has good access to the program. I don't think he could evaluate a player to save his life, but he does get the coaching staff's insight.

Well, while it is important to have accurate evaluations on the players, it doesn't mean anything if I don't know what the staff feels about these players.
