I've never had the least bit of trouble with mine. But yes, it requires some amount of knowledge and self control to run in the snow. My 2002 Xterra was the best 4WD vehicle I have ever owned. 4wd in bad conditions does not equal idiot.
Do people still have a problem with water in gasoline? Happened to me about 30 years ago. Gas station where I bought my gas had some water in a tank . Got down to zero degrees and little ice crystals clogged my fuel filter. In the middle of nowhere in extreme cold.
I started using fuel additive. Haven't in several years though.
