Rank 'Em: BCS Champions

The '01 Miami team is the only team in the BCS era that stupid played out "might beat the worst team in the NFL" argument may actually apply to.

'05 Texas was a great team, and they won what was by far the best BCSMNCG but '01 Miami is in a league of its own. Go look up their roster from that year.

'01 Miami is the best champion of the BCS era, and it's not even close to debatable.

Agreed. I know they lost a little bit after the '01 season, but I've always held to the opinion that the '02 Miami team that came to Neyland and hammered the Vols is the best best college football team I've ever seen in person. I still have no idea how OSU beat them in the NCG. If McGahee torn up his knee the game might have turned of different, but who knows.

The '01 roster is basically a who's who of great NFL players. The fact that they are ranked 4th in the current poll shows that many of the people voting are either too young or have too short a memory to accurately rank all the champs.

Its called a phantom PI call from the Big 12 crew...still one of the worst calls I have ever seen

I think it's funny that an undefeated UT team is trailing in the poll to a TWO LOSS LSU TEAM. How can they be ranked anywhere other than last? Aren't they the only team ever to win a NC with two losses?

That is true. In some ways the end of the game was Music City Bowl-esque. The staff at the Fiesta Bowl might have already had the stage set up to present the trophy to Miami before the ref FINALLY decided to get the flag out of his pocket. I do distinctly recall Miami celebrating for a good bit before the refs eventually made everyone go back to the sidelines and they sorted the call out. I think that's what made the call seem so bad, not the call itself, but the refs indecision before actually making the call.

My entire list

Miami 01 (The best team maybe ever)
Texas 05 (The best quarterback maybe ever, with a stacked defense)
USC 04 (That entire team was sick. Their D was just phenomanal)
FSU 99 (Had a lot of offensive weapons
Tennessee 98 (A great defense, with an excellent running game)
Alabama 09 (Could go with number 5, basically same team as Tennessee)
Florida 08 (That team was really good offensively)
Oklahoma 00 (Don't remember them much)
Florida 06 (Overrated, they didn't impress me very much)
Ohio State 02 (Not even Tressel's best team)
LSU 03 (That team just wasn't that good. Would have lost to USC)
Auburn 10 (Two great players, great O-Line, and that's it)
LSU 07 (the teams they lost too weren't that good, despite injuries)

This is pretty close to mine.

Miami 01
USC 04
Texas 05
FSU 99

-big gap-

Bama 09
Florida 08
Tennessee 98
Oklahoma 00

-gap-

Florida 06
tOSU 02

-gap-

Auburn 10
LSU 03
LSU 07

an FSU without peter warrick remember...who was there entire offense/kick return game

Peter Warrick was a Cincinnati Bengal that year. He left after FSU beat Va Tech in the Sugar Bowl in 99.

Edit - I might have misunderstood you. It sounds like you are saying that Warrick was their entire offense in 2000 but wasn't there for the bowl game (which would be incorrect). I realized though that you might have been saying that he was their entire offense on the 1999 National Championship team but wasn't on the 2000 FSU team that lost to Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. If you meant the latter, it doesn't seem fair to punish Oklahoma for that.

And I agree with those who said Miami should've played Oklahoma that year.

They were certainly good, but I'd take the 2001 team over the 2002 version no question.

Agreed.

In the 2002 NFL Draft (i.e., after the 2001 college football season), Miami lost Najeh Davenport, Clinton Portis, Jeremy Shockey, Bryant McKinnie, Ed Reed, Phillip Buchanon, and Mike Rumph (plus a few others). I don't care who stepped up to take their spots; I don't see how the 2002 team could've been better.

I think it was 12 total starters. They replaced them with talent, but that talent was another year removed from Butch Davis and another year into Larry Coker's tenure, not to mention they had less experience.
