I guess that it helps your reputation when you are on a really good team, and win a Nat Ch. I have edited this to add Tee Martin. He seems to be about mid-pack in this group of the 6 who followed him.

that is a little surprising,I thought he would have rated a little higher

Not to be overly critical, but you simply are not giving Heath Shuler enough credit. He had an absolute cannon for an arm and he was every bit as mobile as Tee Martin. Furthermore, he finished 2nd in Heisman trophy balloting in 1993.

You mentioned Jeff Francis. Are you not quite old enough to remember Tony Robinson? In terms of physical tools, Tony would far surpass most of the quarterbacks on this list.

Shuler was an excellent college qb, and threw it on the run as well as anybody ever did at U.T.

T Rob had some incredible skills, but I think that his teammates slacked off and waited for him to make a play, because they knew that he would. It is a shame that he couldn't stay out of trouble.

Agreed on both points with respect to Tony. 'twas a classic example of extraordinary talent wasted. The teams that he played on didn't possess the overall talent of our late '90s teams but they were still prone to the "let-the-superstar-pull-it-out-of-his-hat" syndrome. Ironically, it was his loss that served as a rallying cry, particularly for the defense, and made them play about three quantum levels above their previous level of play during the '85 season.

That is a fact. The Sugar Bowl Vols of 85 played as a team with no real stars. They had good players, but I got the feeling that nobody cared who got the credit.

Absolutely. As the crown jewel of that team's performance, the '86 Sugar Bowl annihilation of Miami was the single most inspired performance I have seen from a Tennessee team in my 45 years of fandom. In terms of intensity, the defense played like eleven Mike Singletarys.

Shuler is #2 on the top list and possibly #1 on the second. He is still the second best quarterback in UT history in my opinion. He had wheels and a cannon.

I don't remember Tony Robinson or Condredge Holloway. Good point on Shuler.....He is actually my favorite but I don't think his IQ was there. I couldn't remember his arm strength though.

Check out the youtube video of the UT vs AU game in the 80's...Bo Jackson and Tony Robinson are in that one. Still one of the best UT wins ever imo. AU was ranked very high and UT handled them in Knox.

I can go back a couple more!! This is a good list though.

1. Peyton Manning
2. Heath Shuler
3. Andy Kelly
4. Alan Cockrell
5. Tony Robinson
6. Jonathon Crompton
7. Tee Martin
8. Jeff Francis
9. Jerry Colquitt
10. Tyler Bray

Remember Colquitt and Shuler alternated some possesions, Colquitt got hurt his Sr. season should have got the extra year of eligability, which NCAA didn't grant.....and he still got drafted. He was a good QB. I'm convinced, if Shuler has any other Head Coach in the League at the time, ho would have played until 2007-2008. Norv Turner Sucks....

But let me submit this to you....

Why would you say Tyler is better than Crompton?

Admittedly, Crompton had some bad games.

BUT Tyler Bray never won a big game, whereas Crompton won some big ones against Georgia and South Carolina, and almost led us to beat Alabama.

I mean, I know that Bray statistically was better, I'm just wondering what pushes Bray over Crompton.

(P.S. I'm not saying that I think Crompton is better/worse than Bray. I'm just throwing the wrench in there)

ill tell you why bray is above crompton because ut had way more talent when Crompton played than now they had a pretty good defense and good oline and wr and rb.but Bray hass only had a good oline this year and wr with hunter hurt ,rodgers had a great season but he has never played with a rb that you could count on as 100 yards plus a game c clausen was a winner not near as talented and had a floater arm not a rifle arm but he won games.everyone thinks of MANNING when they think of qb but martin had a cannon of an arm was pretty accurate at carolina he was 21 of 22 at one point plus he could pull the ball down and run as fast as most running qb ever .it just fell in to placee his junior year cause he could run and pass and had great running backs and some damn fine wideouts and a great defense and a little sister luck when clint stonerd the football and ut rcovered.and UT was dew because they were really ckase with peyton. as far as wr j hunter had a very good junior year which could have been a great jr year but i can remember more than 15 drop balls without thinking at all and a couple in two or three games in which the Vols might have one if not for the drops them so instead of having one of the best years as wr he had no better that 5 or 6 best season

The great Ken Donahue at his best. Attack, attack, attack!

Martin completed his first 23 passes against a 1-10 South Carolina team that beat Ball State in its opener, and lost the last 10 in a row. He was a career 55% passer. As far as running goes, he carried the ball about 7 or 8 times a game for about 25 yards , or 300 a season. He averaged a 3 or 4 yards a carry, depending on which season.

Casey Clausen
Erik Ainge
Rick Clausen
Jonathan Crompton
Matt Simms
Tyler Bray

How would you rate them?

Also, now that Hunter's career with UT is over, where would you rank him among the "greats?" Or would you even rank him up there?

Just interested in everyone's opinions, now that another QB's career in the book of UT football.

casey clausen
eric ainge
tyler bray
j crompton
rick c
matt sims
