Rank the QB's after Martin

It's hard to get a good gauge on Bray. He's a phenomenal talent, but he was really hampered by the crap coaching that went on during his 3 years here.

I put him behind Crompton solely because the latter showed in his senior year (post-Florida) that he could be poised and win some big games...something that Bray never did here. That and Bray's maturity was always a question mark at absolute best.

Ainge
Clausen
Bray

...for the rest of the list, I spent each game wishing we had a different QB.

I liked Clausen, but I don't understand the excessive love. He was a solid, albeit weak-armed, QB. I don't go for the "he beat" stuff. Sometimes the QB is the main difference (see A&M vs Alabama this year), but even then receivers have to make plays, the offensive line has to play well, the defense has to hold them to no more than the offense scores, etc. The 2002 year when we started out #4 is easily the most frustrating I've ever watched. And it was the impotence of the offense that did it. Against Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Miami we scored 13, 13, 14, and 3. He didn't play the Georgia game, but was pathetic against Alabama and Miami. (I don't care how "tough" a guy is when he's hitting 5 of 14 for 63 yds.) Using the "he beat" mentality, he lost more big games than he won. But...his time there was a great time to be a Vol fan. Teams on the cusp of greatness each year.

This year, Bray's receivers failed him much more than they helped him. Two guys projected in the top 30 draft picks dropped enough balls to add 50 yds per game (and probably a couple of wins) to Bray's numbers. With those guys playing up to par and even a mediocre defense, "he wins" 10 games.

But let me submit this to you....

Why would you say Tyler is better than Crompton?

Admittedly, Crompton had some bad games.

BUT Tyler Bray never won a big game, whereas Crompton won some big ones against Georgia and South Carolina, and almost led us to beat Alabama.

I mean, I know that Bray statistically was better, I'm just wondering what pushes Bray over Crompton.

(P.S. I'm not saying that I think Crompton is better/worse than Bray. I'm just throwing the wrench in there)

Tyler put up the points, but didn't have a defense to hold the other team to less points.

If we had HALF of Alabama's defense, then we could have won 4 or 5 of our games.

1. Georgia (51-44)
2. Miss. St. (41-31)
3. South Carolina (38-35)
4. Missouri (51-48 OT)
5. Vandy (41-18)...I just put this on here because it's Vandy, and by this time the team had given up on Dooley

Total Points FOR: 176
Total Points Against: 222

For a team that averaged 35 PPG against those teams and still lost the game is astounding...

2. Ainge
3. C. Clausen (had the best teams of all)

6. Simms

I don't think that anyone on Vol Nation is wrong about Tyler Bray. He has given his supporters an incredible highlight reel to remember him by. He has also given his detractors plenty of ammo to the point that they believe he is a terrible quarterback and leader. It all depends which Tyler Bray one chooses to remember. There are two of them.
There is the Tyler Bray who threads long throws through tiny windows like a bullet, and lays the long ball out perfectly for a receiver speeding for the end zone. . He played against NC State and Troy this year.

Then there is the Tyler Bray who stunk up the joint, and gave up in the second half against Florida, finishing with 7 straight incompletions. That Tyler Bray also played against Kentucky last year and Vandy this year. I submit that there are 2 Tyler Brays, and everyone's opinion is at least partially correct. It just depends which one you choose to remember.

You've hit on an excellent interpretive angle, there. If we had possessed the foresight to hire a clinical psychologist who specializes in split personality disorders, perhaps we could have unified the two Tyler Brays into one highly effective quarterback.

Matt Simms was not as talented but he gave all he had to give. I never saw him one time give up. I would start every qb listed over Bray.

He was the worst decision maker I've ever seen....worse than crompton as a junior

Oh I know.

I just always feel like after Martin, it was a different era of UT football, so I just marked it there.

If we went of all time, then absolutely, none of them hold a candle.

it is a good starting point, but we could go back one more and guess what,he didn't do what Tee done :) Tee is the man

I guess that it helps your reputation when you are on a really good team, and win a Nat Ch. I have edited this to add Tee Martin. He seems to be about mid-pack in this group of the 6 who followed him.

Crompton was pretty much a terrible QB until the last half of his senior season, when he moved up to competent. Would never rank him ahead of Bray or hardly anybody.

After thinking about it a little more I now disagree with you & myself. I changed Jonathan Crompton and Tyler Bray due to the fact the Crompton did win some games and did show some heart.

Casey Clausen
Erik Ainge
Jonathan Crompton
Tyler Bray
Rick Clausen
Matt Simms[/QU This... Is how I would have ranked them!

Crompton had wins against SC and UGA but he was still garbage for the majority of his career. Bray never won a big game but he at least gave us a chance in a lot of games.
