Rating our Head Coaches

Fulmer A+. Dude won us a natty, dominated bama, turned it around against Florida. Yeah his last years weren't great but he's responsible for our greatest run in program history. Or at least in my time.

How would you rate our coaches from Neyland to present? Anytime we lose, we start criticizing coaches first. Curious, especially for the old timers who actually saw pre-Majors/Fulmer coaches, how you would rank them. Majors was the first coach I remember so I’m just guessing based on what I have read about the others. How do your rankings differ from mine? Was Neyland the only ‘great’ coach we have ever had?

Neyland - A
Wyatt - C+
Dickey B+
Battle C+
Majors B-
Fulmer B
Kiffin C+
Dooley D
Jones C-
Pruitt D-
Heupel B-

So stupid. Do you understand what a mess Heupel inherited? How on earth do you have him and Majors only one single letter than Lyle? Are you trolling or just that clueless?

The South Carolina and Arkansas losses could very well be two games in his 4 seasons that keep Tennessee from 2 playoffs. I get the grade. I’m impartial to anything A+ to B-….

The fact Shane Beamer and Sam Pittman could keep Tennessee out of the playoffs 2 of 3 seasons is sickening.
He inherited the worst roster in the country. 35 scholarship players with most not being SEC caliber players. He turned the program around in 2 years. Unbelievable! Most were predicting 4-5 years. Like I said, how soon we forget.

In his time here I doubt Majors even performed at the historical norm for UT...had things going well last 4-5 years but there were still inexplicable losses and games. B-, B if you want to be generous

I like Heupel more than any coach we've had in my lifetime. I'll like him more if he attempts to show the selection committee that we have a good passing game over the next 2 weeks. More of the same will not change anyone's mind. A person who sees the big picture understands this.

A great coach gets the most from the player talent with which he has to work.
A great recruiter gets the best players,
His record reflects his ability to get the best players.
Is recruiting not one of the primary responsibilities of a college head coach? You're separating the two for the sake of your argument.

At the end of the day, only 1 coach leads their team to a national championship each season. Fulmer did that.

Dude, Kirby isn't going anywhere for at least a decade and probably more. Dude is king of the city in Dawg world.

Only thing I can really see really caving their program would be some severe sanctions or something. You know that's not gonna be allowed to happen.

He doesn't seem the type to want to try the NFL. If anything and at best, he's an average in game coach. He is winning at Georgia with a ridiculous talent advantage against most teams. In the big leagues, parity is king.

Add that he's basically the same age as Heupel
He’s better than average in game. The gap however is somewhat narrowing.

I separate the two based on their true definitions but not for the sake of an argument. I stand by my statements.

Addendum:

Barry Switzer lost one game in his first 3 years at Oklahoma, won 3 conference championships and 2 national titles. When he was asked who he considered the best coach in the conference he said Bill Snyder.

Addendum 2:

I was wrong. He said Snyder was coach of the century.

Snyder's first tenure at Kansas State is still considered one of the most successful rebuilding projects in collegiate history. In recognition of his rebuilding work, Hall of Fame football coach Barry Switzer once stated, "He's not the coach of the year, he's not the coach of the decade, he's the coach of the century."[12]

Am I supposed to somehow believe that the roster he inherited has anything to do with him getting coached circles around by Shane Beamer almost 24 months in? lol

Wow…

“We have entered The Twilight Zone.”

Fulmer, with the only natty in forever. And years of sustained excellence. Perfect? No, the end was ugly. But an A all the way.

And Heupel is an A to date. That could move down as he coaches more years. For context, Majors never got the Vols consistently at the top in nearly two decades of his rebuild.

Heupel has got us in the mix twice in his first four years after inheriting a dumpster fire…with a depleted roster and scholarship restrictions. That is an A.

The next step is a title.

Agree mostly. Heupel is an absolute A given where we are from when he took over the program

Fulmer gets a B+ from me due to the awful way he finished and not getting Peyton to at least playing for a natty. But he did win one.

Majors, to me, underachieved given the talent he had, and never really competed for a natty. - C+.

Pruitt and Dooley get F's, and Jones a D-, as there were at least a couple of moments.

athletic directors

Hamilton. D hired Kiffin, Dooley, Pearl
Dickey. B. Hired Fulmer, poor basketball hires
White A+. Hired Josh and Kim
Hart B- hired Barnes
Woodruff B. Hired Dickey, Battle , Majors, Summit
Fulmer D- Hired Pruitt
Currie B. Hired Vitello
I think Battle was a good Xs and Os coach, but he was a terrible recruiter. The talent level decreased was closely followed by with increasing losses.
