Real HC Options

My 2 cents

The head basketball coach’s extension tacks on a year to the life of the contract, taking it through the 2021-2022 season. This is critical for Mick Cronin’s ability to recruit at Cincinnati. High school prospects want to ensure that when they sign with a program their coach will be there for the longevity of their eligibility with the team. Coaches target and begin talking to players sometimes as early as their sophomore or junior year of high school. So keeping a contract at around 6-7 years long lessens the likelihood of Cronin being axed by UC* while he is playing for the Bearcats.

*This would never happen. UC loves Mick and visa versa. But it’s good for the high school players to see that mutual commitment in writing.

If Lance’s tweets hold true, Mick Cronin will make roughly $1 million more in his new contract than the last time he signed an extension. Bringing the UC head coach up to the $2 million club is critical for Bearcats basketball. In the simplest of terms, this pay bump makes it that much more expensive for other schools to poach Cronin from Cincinnati. Now, we all know he’s worth that money and more, but most schools won’t take that risk.

Still, while throwing money at Mick will certainly keep him happy and ensure he won’t leave Cincinnati if a more perfect job comes along, this is but one task among many that Bohn needs to accomplish on the basketball side. He still needs to address the outdated arena issue and give the UC head coach and his staff a larger recruiting budget. But if this news today is any indication, the new Cincinnati athletic director more than understands the situation at hand and will do what it takes to fulfill those needs for Mick Cronin.

2.13.2014 UPDATE: Per Fox19′s Joe Danneman, President Santa Ono and the UC Board of Trustees were well on their way to awarding Mick Cronin with a raise and extension before Bohn arrived at Cincinnati. So they should receive much of the praise for this smart and generous decision.

And what do we have if we keep him?

Tennessee has served out our Bruce Pearl show clause no post season play for 3 years. Let's right a wrong.

That's what's so funny is that we might as well have just accepted the damn show cause. It would have been less painful than watching this shi-ite for the last 3 years.

the NCAA would have hammered UT. They ruled after he was fired, if they kept him they would have nailed UT and even Pearl could not have salvaged it. They did the right thing, just hired the wrong guy, partly because NCAA was hanging over UT's head during the search, because of Pearl's actions.

So assuming Pearl has been tabbed as the guy the boosters wont allow to get the hiring call. How would UT handle the hire since Pearls show cause doesn't come off till August? Would they not let Martin Walk till later to salvage recruiting. Or Axe Martin early and say a search is under way for a long time and hire an interim like Tony Jones or Mark Pancratz which would tip their hand. Or Hire Pearl immediately but accept he cant recruit.

At least CCM managed not to get us in anymore NCAA trouble.

I don't have to justify, the OP asked for realistic names that would likely be on hart's list.

You know, not the Pearls, Boeheims, Howlands, Smarts, Phil Jackson's etc.

Exactly. I think those names provided earlier in the thread were probably realistic.

Why did Wake can Gaudio coming off 2 straight NCAA tourney appearances?

Fans compared him to his late predecessor Skip Prosser imho. I think the fans thought their job was that lucrative that after what Prosser had done Gaudio was a stop gap but they could do better.

I would think you hire him and live with the fact he cants recruit off campus. All his assistants could, I don't think it would really be much of an issue.

Keep in mind too that he is also petitioning the NCAA to have is show cause shortened.

That's what I wish the powers would have done. I knew it would play out this way. Just bring Pearl back. It won't break the bank and UT is instantly credible again. This was not that hard to predict. Just look at the history.

As long as booger eater and the rest of the highers ups remain in charge, CBP will not be walking back through that door. We also know that UT won't spend the money to hire a real coach, so coaches like Smart, Marshall, Howland, etc. won't be considered.

Accordingly, we will be hiring another mid-major, so who is out there? I've heard Pitino, Jr. mentioned some and Rick Byrd would probably be an option as well. Let's hear some other REALISTIC options.

Don't be so quick to rule out Bruce. This will be Haslam's call. And Bruce will be in Nashville tomorrow at the Sportsfest along with several other UT coaches...which is very odd. There may already be some movement underfoot...

I have thought the same thing.

In 10 seasons as a head coach he led his team to 2 NCAA tournaments, not at the top of my list, or even close really.

Had 2 of the worst jobs in college basketball and coming straight out of HS coaching.
Didn't blossom til he got in with Prosser at Wake.
I'd take him over any of the mid major coaches that have no tournament experience.

Absolutely right about Haslam. All these folks crying about what a criminal Bruce is for not owing up to a freakin' barbecue get-together at his house at not the exactly right time.......Pleeeeeeze! Who was crying for his head back then outside of Big Orange country? Nobody who pulls for the Vols wanted him to go away. He knows the boosters and facilities and UT's system and won't need to actively recruit anybody 'til August. Just his being HC will be enough ammo for his assistants to pull some good ones in until then. I hope you're right DV.:nono:

I agree with 100% of this and believe that UT's admin was shown two sets of penalties - one for if Pearl was retained and another (the one we accepted) for if Pearl was fired by the time of the hearing in June of 2011. My only gripe is why Hammy was allowed to make that hire when it was apparent that he would be stepping down as well and had such an abysmal track record of hires in the first place (we never even talk about firing Delmonico to replace him with Raleigh).
