Real HC Options

If you hire Bruce you're NOT taking a chance at all......I've hired a lot of people in my life, mostly professional people, IE engineers, chemists, etc and after you've worked with them a few weeks you know what kind of job their going to do....
We know all there is to know about Bruce...the good, the bad, the warts, everything....no surprises....
And we now know he has a rare, a very rare trait...he's LOYAL...something I doubted existed...he took his beating, stayed in the community, continued to say and DO positive things, was and is an advocate....its hard to believe but to me he's more LOYAL than Pat Summitt....Hire him...

I wouldn't go that far, but I think you have a point about loyalty and Bruce Pearl.

I agree. Hart and Pearl are probably working out the details as we speak.

I don't think they are. Pearl's best season as a coach was immediately followed by an all out NCAA investigation that led to his firing the following year. He shouldn't be in the discussion IMO.

Before yesterday, I would have encouraged you to just let it go. After a night's sleep and long thought on the matter, I still believe it would take a good attorney and a couple of weeks of meetings with the NCAA, but if that Cheeky fellow and his buddies got behind it, Bruce could be re-instated. Other coaches have done worse, and gotten a slap on the wrist.

As of now, the only time Bruce could be re-hired is after August. And that means at least a one year set-back in the recruiting class. Cofer might stick as a legacy, but the others will probably bail.

The only coach outside of Bruce Pearl I would consider is Gregg Marshall. Hamilton passed him over twice, and now it will take paying him the big bucks. But if Tennessee cannot outbid the Shockers, we are in more dire straits than we may realize.

If there is a coaching search, I believe whoever Hart hires will probably be someone on few people's radar. And I hope he gets it right.

Could be that Wichita State and Marshall don't get a lot of respect from the rest of the college basketball nation. He might be willing to come to the SEC.

Who ever it is its got to be someone like a Bruce Pearl, Butch Jones or a Pat Summitt/Holly Warlick its got to be someone with fire and spirit that wants to be the best of the best!

Coach Martin never had that fire to rev up the fanbase get the students to the games or even show some disapproval at the referee's when they are basically having there way with our team!

I lost faith in Cuonzo when I heard someone (a beat writer maybe?) say on the radio that he would be just as comfortable coaching a small school as Tennessee and doesn't see the two jobs any differently!

Wow! Had heard about this. Good Lord.

Let's assume Bruce is not hired. I know many of you want Bruce, but let's look at that situation.
UT is not presently a situation that many coaches will want to walk into. It will be a rebuilding process. We haven't been to the tourney for awhile. But, we do have a great upside.
Hart will have to reach into the same pool that Martin came from, and hope for the best.
This, of course, is my opinion. And we all know about opinions. :)

I wouldn't go that far, but I think you have a point about loyalty and Bruce Pearl.

I understand your reluctance...and don't get me wrong I'm a huge admirer of Summitt but at the end she had some divided loyalties with the reorganization of the department including the dismissal of certain individuals....that's a tough spot to be in...

I've had to terminate close friends...and I'm not proud to say on one occasion I probably did so to save my own job...

I agree its time to let martin go so my names are and these should be realistic
- Donnie Tyndall - Southern Miss
- Steve Prohm - Murray State
- Tim Cluess - Iona
- Matt Painter - Purdue
- Buzz Williams - Marquette

Obviously I would rather have pearl but I highly doubt that will happen so this is a list of guys I think could do better than CCM

Painter?

Oh my, people would freak out.

I just don't see the upside of Buzz Williams leaving Marquette a Basketball school with a better overall resume in a basketball driven conference for UT. What can UT offer Buzz that Marquette can't?

From a recent article, fwiw:

But like most things in life, it's not a perfect fit.

When Marquette replaced its president and athletic director more than a year ago after problems within the athletic department, Williams lost two allies. Much has been made about the disconnect between Buzz Williams and Larry Williams, but from what I've observed and learned in the last seven months, the rift is exaggerated.

And nowhere is it decreed that an AD and a coach have to be friends for the primary sport to run as smoothly, efficiently and successfully as it does at Marquette.

Are there drawbacks? Maybe the job has changed some since Williams, one of the few big-time coaches without an agent, negotiated his own deal three years ago that essentially allows him to stay as long as both parties are happy.

Marquette does require its freshmen basketball players to live in a non-air-conditioned freshman dorm, but the school spent time talking with Steve Taylor Jr. and Jamal Ferguson last summer to hear their wishes. The school wants its players mingling with the student body for the cultural experiences.

Marquette's academic standards are high and the school cannot be moved away from Midwestern winters, but Williams, given some of the challenges, has managed to recruit and develop players as well as any coach in the country.

Not many thought Frank Martin would leave K State, relationship between AD and President can be very important.

Had 2 of the worst jobs in college basketball and coming straight out of HS coaching.
Didn't blossom til he got in with Prosser at Wake.
I'd take him over any of the mid major coaches that have no tournament experience.

Exactly. He coached at a school that is one of only 5 original D1 schools to never make the NCAA tourney. Hardly a fair measuring stick. If Coach K and Knight couldn't do it why is it held against Gaudio?

This guy's about to become a really hot commodity, IMO: Derrick Clark, Metro State

Metro State is currently 22-1 and ranked No. 1 in Div. II.

...

I'd be thrilled to get this guy. Success at Div II beats mediocrity at Div I.
