Recruiting Efforts

Wonder how much better he will be than mcbee? I think using tyler summitt as your measuring stick is a little off.

I'll go out on a limb and predict that he is much more athletic than McBee and will be able to shoot the same percentage or better from three. By the way, McBee is a scholarship player---no longer a walk-on thanks to our previous coaching staff and going nuts over one made shot in the Kansas game.

So you think Pearl gave him a scholarship because of one shot? if so, you have much to learn

You are suggesting that I have much to learn? I was at the Kansas game and the post game when Pearl announced that McBee had earned a scholarship because of his shot in the Kansas game. Get a clue before you start suggesting that anyone else has much to learn. Or are you suggesting that he earned his scholarship on his stellar play and contributions to the team? Makes about as much sense as your defense of your hero Pearl.

maybe if they get some consistant minutes Mcbee and others will come through while these new guys progress.I look at the seven we have on scholarship and i see what could be a good team.

Can we go back to my original question? I don't know these answers. I was hopping that this board would give me insight. Is it because of time? Lack of players? Or just the way he recruits?

Probably a little bit of all of those things.

Martin got here way too late to get involved with any of the top recruits for this year. Since he was at Missouri State, he wasn't involved with any of them before his arrival, either. Even if he had been, no one with dozens of big-time offers is going to choose UT until we know how Pearl's mess plays out.

Because he was coaching at a mid-major, he's probably comfortable with taking mid-level prospects and trying to coach them up anyway. Since he needed players to fill out UT's roster for next year, he offered the guys who he'd been considering for Missouri State that he thought had potential. If we're lucky, one of them might just turn into an outstanding player. Even if none of them do, these guys are probably good enough to offer minutes without hurting the team. They have to be better than Stephen Pearl.

Martin should get a free pass on any judgments in regard to his recruiting for this year. We simply don't know how he'll do right now.

The mind of a Pearlophile is like that of a little kid that knows that Santa is not real, but yet part of them just can't let go of the fact Santa is the "man" when you are a kid. Just like know Pearlophiles know that Bruce screwed up and put us in a bad mess, but part of them just can't let him go.

And the mind of a hatophile is that they don't care if the
program returns to mediocrity. Most of us were in love with winning, not Pearl. I hope coach Martin does great.
But, all the post about how we were going to get a big
time proven coach with our tradition and facilities was only ponzi scheme smoke and mirrors. It's done now so lets hope for the best. We are all in the same boat now.

A little perspective here.

N.C. State, a school with 10 times the basketball tradition of UT, a school that has won multiple national titles, and which has equal resources and facilities, was also looking for a coach at the same time we were.

They ended up hiring Mark Gottfried. The Mark Gottfried. The same guy who got fired at Alabama a few years ago, and wasn't even allowed to finish the season.

You just can't go out and conjure up your dream coach anytime you want to. Remember when North Carolina had to hire Matt Doherty because they couldn't get Roy Williams at the time?

Martin may work out and he may not. I'm glad to take the chance. Or maybe you'd rather have Mark Gottfried?

I was refering to the hatophiles who were posting that we could pull in a big time coach if we fired Pearl. That's all.

Pearlophiles will always be Pearlophiles. Attempting to use common sense with them is an exercise in futility.

I make a thought provoking statement and I am labeled as a pearlophile? What I was trying to say was something along the lines of - build a bridge and get over it.
Everyone seems steadfast in mourning the death of our program and we haven't even had a chance to let a season under coach Martin play out.

Sorry if I ruined an opportunity for you to use your semi-clever neologism

however the scraps he is eating up may be a waste. Also we may have the smallest guard oriented team in D1. Sad to see how far we have fallen because Bruce couldn't tell the truth.
the size thing would have been an issue if pearl was still here. he only recruited 2's and 3's and tweeners. Outside of Harris name one highly rated FRESHMAN player he signed that was not a shooting guard or wing that came close to panning out.

Wayne Chism worked out pretty well and he was top 50

O.k...maybe that part I really don't care about. I honestly don't believe our coach knows how to recruit that well or sell our program. I would believe that all these kids that committed to TN didn't have any other big time offers.

I think you are a bit premature with your conclusion that CCM is not a good recruiter. Harris is making the correct decision and Hopson spent so much time away from classes that he almost had to try the NBA. Jones could not make into UT and who knows what Ware was/is thinking. The pickings were pretty slim when CCM was hied and I think he did a pretty good job of getting enough bodies to field a team this fall. Let s save our negative comments until the 2012 recruiting season is over.

That class also had Duke Crews, Ramar Smith, Cam Tatum, and Marques Johnson (all were top 25 at their position and top 100 overall, Crews and Smith were top 50 overall) as highly rated players, so Pearl went 1 for 5 there.

And Duke, Ramar, and Marques excelled elsewhere?
