Recruiting Football Talk VII

I’m still enjoying the Josh Heupel era of Tennessee football. He’s stabilized the program, and we have won more than we lost. All that said, it’s basically the end of year 3 now, we’re going to lose to Georgia, we’re going to finish 8-4 and there are some serious red flags and trends emerging that I think warrant some real concern and aren’t overreactions.

1) Josh Heupel is now 1-10 when trailing at half. Clear evidence that he is terrible at making halftime adjustments. He gets his ass kicked in basically every 2nd half he plays against a team with a pulse. I don’t even know how you improve that in Year 6 as a head coach.

2) Josh Heupel is now 3-7 on the road against teams not named Vandy or Kentucky. Not only do we lose games, we look like trash on the road, lifeless, and like a team with no real plan. You can’t win championships being that bad on the road. Relatively, we have now pissed down our leg twice against two mediocre football teams in South Carolina and Missouri in back to back years in games with a lot on the line.

3) Our defense continues to be terrible. Outside of the defensive line, not a single unit on the defense has improved in 3 years. Heads need to roll. 350 scrimmage yards for their RB. Just awful. Can’t tackle. Can’t cover.

4) Undisciplined. Yes, the other teams should also be called for flags, but we do commit a lot of dumb and poorly timed penalties. And I’m not talking about this game as the prime example, it’s been all year.

I’m not calling for Heupel’s head. Far from it. But it’s hard to feel really good about this program right now when all of those points I just listed are glaring issues and pervasive in the program. I mean 1-10 when trailing…..that’s not good coaching.
1. True

2. That wouldn’t be so worrying if we didn’t have utter debacles on the road. You expect a rebuilding program to have some conference road struggles, but not these complete meltdowns.

3. Yep, not good enough in year 3.

4. I want to agree, but I think that wouldn’t be such an issue if you got the other stuff fixed. Maybe I’m wrong.

Heupel and the Vols on the road is a problem. Defense sucked ass. Banks and Martinez are problems. Offense didn’t help either. Can’t believe we got our asses beast by a poverty program like Missouri.

We scored 7 points!

I know the defense was BAD but aint beating Vandy with that!

Line couldn't block for the run and Milton Miltoned.

When did people start excluding teams from stats? Yeah vandy is an awful team. Every college football team plays awful teams, it's part of college football.

Take it all and throw it in the trash.

He was hampered like no UT coach ever has been. NCAA eyes, scholarship reductions, left with a SKELETON roster...we were CHEATERS and left in the TRASH.

Then we start with a borderline top-20 team talent. We're now ONLY at #16 lmao. Want to know who's around us?? UF, UNC, and Auburn, man they're KILLING IT!! 🤣🤣🤣

AND NOW, JUST NOW, WE HAVE B2B TOP 10 TYPE CLASSES COMING IN. OUR CURRENT CLASS BCR IS 70%+ 😅🤣😂 WE'RE JUST NOW BRINGING IN TALENT WITH CURRENT FR CLASS AND THE INCOMING 2024 CLASS.

CHILLL

Bruh almost all those came in Y1 😅
Do you think Josh Heupel is good at making in game adjustments? Does he use timeouts wisely? Does he make good choices on 4th down conversions?

This is not directed at you, as you should know I am pro Heupel, so everyone spare me the “turning on Heupel” rhetoric.

When you get beat this bad, it is mostly coaching, IMO. We had some critical errors that aren't on the coaches, but they have to be better. They are better. Still need to improve. It's up to Josh to make the necessary changes to keep this from happening.

Been said a few times on the podcast that Martinez is coaching on an expiring contract.
