Recruiting Football Talk VII

I think we all need to temper expectations for next year. The o line, interior D line and defensive backfield, depth at linebacker, uncertainties at wr and TE.

There are a lot of question marks..... But the future is bright. I just don't see 2024 being THE year.
For a natty or just a good season? I see no reason why we can’t be 8-4 or 9-3 next year.

We haven't recruited well enough for next year to be THE year. Not to mention we'll still be limited by scholarship reduction because of Dumbass Pruitt. Even if it's just two a year, that's a big deal on a team in serious need of depth. Nico could be all-world, but he can't do it by himself. I just don't see us having the horses for next year to be THE year. I mean, making the expanded playoffs? Sure, that's possible. But I don't see us winning the SEC or the NC. And I assume that's what people mean by THE year.
Its really just LoS and WR recruiting. Im jot sure what the issues were Y1 and Y2. But its hurting.

To me... good is the top 2 or 3 SEC teams are the only ones we lose to (unless major injury concerns).

This year BECAUSE of the rebuild and inexperience, 8-4 is a good season. That'll mean we only lost 1 game at home (Georgia) and the other 3 losses were to good SEC teams on the road. Florida game stings, because they too were in a rebuild and there's no reason for the lack of effort in the first half that game. You haven't won in the swamp in 20 years, the fans were hostile, the other team was chirpy, if that's not motivation enough then wth are you doing?

I can understand (but don't excuse) the mental apathy for Missouri. A team you absolutely demolished for 2 years... Heupel has to figure out the balance between being confident and being almost delusional that you're an underdog (like Kirby/Saban create).

But the staff and team should understand, you got a big orange T on your helmet and regardless of how good or bad the team is anyone playing you is going to give you their best shot. The fanbase and brand is too large for it to be a game other teams overlook.

Win the East
Make the final 4.

You can win 8 games and beat nobody with a pulse.
You have a different definition of "with a pulse" than most people here.

South Carolina, A&M, and UK have a pulse. Are they great teams? No, but they have a pulse. UVA, Austin Peay, UConn, Vandy, et al don't have a pulse. Beating nobody with a pulse yields 5, maybe 6 wins.

AM maybe but because of their talent.

Pretending SCAR and UK are any more than gum on the bottom of a shoe is hilarious.

Lol, UK isn't even going to a pointless bowl game this year. That's the funniest thing I've heard all day.
Kentucky under Mark Stoops is a team with a pulse. Especially when it comes to playing Tennessee at home.

A&M wasn't belly-up yet when they came to town either.

You don't have to write off the whole season.

The annoying little brother that you keep around because you have to.
They're bowl eligible.

As you usually do, you define terms to be over-the-top, unreasonable things, and then make an argument around the unreasonable definition.

I don't think anybody here is suggesting that USCjr/A&M/UK are good teams. They aren't "the gum on the bottom of your shoe" either. I do agree that none of our wins are against very solid teams. It also doesn't mean this season is some kind of unmitigated disaster.

Just looking at our 2024 schedule
OU
Bama
UGA
All good wins

The rest of the schedule should be penciled in as wins before the season starts.
So if we go 9-3 next year, it's an average season, 8-4 is a failure because you lost to a bad team.

We have had two problems this year that everybody has touched on. Less than average play on defense and lack of consistent play on offense. I think Defense is mainly scheme and or preparation game to game. On a couple of series last week it looked like a Chinese Fire Drill at times. The inability to get on the field and line up ready to play is coaching.
The offense I really think has been hamstrung by the lack of confidence in the QB and or the WR's to open up the play book. Until the past few weeks we haven't thrown the ball in the center of the field more than a handful of times and I can't remember us throwing the WR screen passes 20 times a game last year.

I think some changes MUST be made on the defensive side of the ball next year and on the offensive side they are just getting ready to bust loose. Everybody talks about the OL but remember that this offense is built for speed and the ability of the backs to find the cracks and run. The days of mauling the guy in front of you for 10 secs is not what they are supposed to do, they are basically for lack of a better way to describe it are supposed to just get in the way for about 3 seconds. Now I'm not saying they don't need to block but opening huge holes and holding a pass block for 10 secs isn't always needed. The scheme itself is designed to keep the LB and DL off balance where they can't just pin their ears back and go wide open in any specific situation.

I am by no means a coach and I'm not at practice everyday but these are just a few things I see while watching. No I don't study film but I played long enough to look for some of the little things that go on during the game and these are just some obvious things I have noticed.

Lmaoooooooo UK is a game TN wins unless the coach is going to get fired. (Looking at DD and Pruitt.) If you can pencil them in as a win before the season it's not a team with a pulse.

When the AM game came around, I said it was a big win, they're talented. So maybe 1 bug win with 2 bad losses. That's still an F.
