Recruiting Football Talk VII

I just wish NIL could be regulated for what it's supposed to be instead of what it is. It wasn't supposed to be for paying a HS QB 8 million, or stealing an edge rusher from a rival for 300k. It was supposed to be for the kids who made $10 off a YouTube channel, or the OH St kids who sold their stuff for tattoos.
I just wish CFB epically big time CFB would admit what it is, and set up a free agency/contract situation.

The problem is it's basically IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to have the burden of proof.

To me a "perfect" NIL world is, hey this QB through his own channels (his family or a former HS coach/school etc.) setup a camp for a Saturday during the off-season and made a couple grand. Or this player has his own VLOG channel and can make a few hundred per video etc.

But the money is simply too vast for schools not to inject some level of "here's the carrot, come play for us"

Don't be an ass...I've not had a problem with players getting paid...I have a MASSIVE problem with unregulated free agency.

How the **** can you be so blind you can't see how destructive it will be? We lose Pearce and I'm gonna absolutely lose my 💩.
Listen, I let you talk to me like that when you come pick me up at my tent shed in the woods for treatment, but I'm not gonna sit here and let you treat me like this on VN

And in this perfect world, I have no issue with NIL. I just hate what it is now.
I mean honestly how many athletes do you think have a deal vs have a deal and they actually do something? I can probably count on one hand how many spots I've heard from guys on our team this year, but I would guess at least half the team is getting something.

$300 for an autographed jersey or doing a local TV spot for JoBob's used cars.....or getting paid if EA Sports wants to put you on the cover of a video game...that's what this was originally about. and in that type of market it would regulate itself, because let's face it, the back up right guard isn't going to be sought after to use his name/image/likeness for monetary gain like the start QB would.

what we have now with the collectives is all fancy talk for Agencies that are acting on the behalf of the athlete to get them paid. while each individual player still doesn't have an agent, the program does. and every program wants their collective to be the equivalent of Jimmy Sexton.

and i'm fine with that, but i think anyone that's confusing what NIL is today, vs what it was originally meant to be is being naïve.

Not a big baseball guy...but I think Rickey Henderson would be my #1 pick in a draft your perfect team.

The fact that the gap between him and 2nd place in career stolen bases is so vast that the number between them 468 would be good enough to still put him in the top 50 all time is absolutely CRAZY to me.

First all time in runs scored too
Also in the 3k hit club
Just 3 shy of 300 career HRs
and just a tad under .300 for his career batting average

Welcome to the pay for play era....I hate it....
College football has been pay for play for decades.

The difference was that there were only a few teams at the very top that were skilled/connected/protected enough to do it and get away with it.

Now it's above the table and everyone can do it. Only some teams will be able to do it well. Congratulations, we are one of those programs. We need more Vol Club members to preserve our spot in the Top 10 collectives going forward, but for now, we are at the forefront.

I understand why a lot of posters on here are calling for regulation, but you do realize that we will just go right back to how things have been for at least the last 50 years. The teams that figured out paying recruits/players under the table (Bama, UGA) will just go back to their well-oiled, well-protected machines, and then everyone will be complaining about cheating again.

For a program like Tennessee, falling on our face constantly since the mid-00's, this new era is way better for us.

I can understand @Ulysees E. McGill not liking that (very click-baity, engagement driven) headline that Pearce is getting other offers. But guess what, we can afford to keep him, and we likely will. We are also indirectly speaking with other players that will be looking for a raise. That is the game now. It's a second and sometimes third recruiting cycle for players.

Well I've filmed 2 different events. Meet & Greet with basketVOLs and they more than earned what they got paid, stayed and met every single person that paid to attend and played some hoops with any kid that wanted to. A 2 hour event and I'm certain they were all there closer to 4 hours because they simply weren't going to leave if someone was still in line.

A football camp for a former player, he wasn't a Vol at the time but also not doing anything in the NFL yet. It was a full blown day camp, more of a use my name and I'll make an appearance. A good number of the kids that attended were there for the coaching, but all the kids got a chance to meet and get a picture taken with him.

That to me was how NIL should be worked, but I agree I'm sure there are quite a bit who got "deals" that basically only exist in writing and they didn't do anything other than sign to said university to get the pay.
