Recruiting Football Talk VII

I can’t wait for all the collectives to finally be like, yea you ain’t worth it to all of the athletes. It would be funny to see the kids sitting there with an empty bag.
I mean it won't be the collectives. Given that a collective is a representetive of other people's money, they are (should be) under an obligation to spend it.

After a few millionaires and billionaires blow a bunch of money getting no closer to a championship, the market will eventually settle with only a handful of teams spending serious money in NIL and everyone else playing at an entirely different level. That's my prediction anyway of it continues this way. They can only pay a high school bust a 7 figure contract so many times. That won't sustain itself.

Not intending to be a self-serving post, but this place is like an extended family so: Retiring today. 39 years teaching Math /coaching HS Football, several years with Wrestling and Track. Time to spend time with wife and help look after our Moms. Gonna start tutoring Math online, so if yall know anyone that needs that service, send them my way. Excited to see what God has next. GO VOLS!!
Awesome! I am a year into retirement, much for the same reasons. Highly recommend it! Congratulations!

Paying players lacks integrity? Every program does it. Every coach we have ever had did it. Am I missing something? It's even allowed now.
You don't think there is anything a little scummy about slipping 20s in McDonald's bags?

There is always some moral culpability in running any kind of scheme based on lying and cheating the rules. Whether you agree with the rules or not.

And I can accept disagreement there, but the fact of the matter is everyone on this forum had no problem calling Saban and Bama some dirty cheaters in the Pre-NIL era. Are we taking that back now? I'm not. It's scummy. And it sucks Pruitt gave us the black eye for that while simultaneously being bad at it.

Obviously there are levels to this. It doesn't remotely come close to say... Art Briles and Baylor.

Definitely take care of your moms. Received tragic news yesterday. After weeks of worrying, well, extra worrying, over my mom's health, I found out my best friend's mom passed suddenly. Still in shock.

Paying players in cash against the rules, bringing in players during Covid restrictions, coaches texting that they know they are breaking rules, and then you want the administration to cover it all up? Then, when Pruitt got hired at Bama, he would get immunity from the NCAA to talk about what was done and how it was covered up. Great plan.

I always said that the end result will decide how it was handled, and it was handled correctly. Leadership took charge. Yes, I am competitive, but I don't condone cheating and covering things up. Just like what Jim Harbaugh, the Patriots, and the Astros did. This isn't complicated.

You're right-- we're not a "win at all cost" program and that's top-down. Our rivals are. You're also spot-on that UT is having to recruit around the perception that UT football is a next-tier down program-- not elite. They're having to chip away at this-- and proving it on the field is the path. The losses to UGA and Bama aren't as detrimental as losses to programs like UF and Mizzou. If UT had beaten UF this year, it would be a different narrative.

That said, I think recruiting reflects this staff's philosophy more than anything else. They prioritize keeping the players they have (and want) and bringing in guys who fit their profile and can be developed up the depth chart-- along with select plug-and-play portalers who fit very specific needs.

.
In the current Wild West climate of the sport, if we aren’t willing to do what it takes and other teams are, then no one should want heupel fired for being an 8-4 coach.

That’s literally what we are in a conference as hard as ours with a “win with integrity” mindset over a “win at all costs” mindset… at least until something changes with the way the sport is being run.

The McDonalds bags thing just adds to the story for the media. Players were getting paid anywhere whether it was through a mcdonalds bag or handing them a stack of bills.

Of course Saban and Bama are some dirty cheaters. It just never made sense why programs like us and Ole Miss got in trouble for paying players when it was clear as it could be that Bama was doing it at a much higher level for many years. We just wanted the same blind eye to our payments that Bama received, not that we didn't do it or want to do it. I also didn't want us to pay Pruitt's buyout bc I can't stand that Bama bum but getting your entire program in trouble and having a ton of good players transfer out to avoid it didn't seem worth it.

Not paying players is just asking to be Vanderbilt. Hell, they probably did in some capacity, at least during the Franklin tenure. I don't consider it cheating, just playing on a level field with the rest of the good teams.

Where exactly was he going to go? Arena football is out of business

I wonder how many NFL execs look at him and see another Jalen Hurts? Not saying he is, but NFL execs see players completely different than we do.

I read we saved 4.6 million. 12.6 million buyout - 8 million in fines (not even sure that includes expenses/billable hours). I wanted Pruitt fired as much as the next guy, but what exactly did he do that lacked integrity? Firing him in the circus show way we did set an extremely high bar for college administration stupidity.

I disagree

It is remarkable that a few of the guys at the center of the investigation went to UGA, not TN. Wonder what that offer looked like….
