Mike Elko and Aggies hire away Florida LB coach Jay Bateman as the DC. Bateman was the former Army DC for 7 seasons and UNC defensive coordinator. Known as a very strong recruiter
Know this won't go over well, but I think we've got "comfortable" guys on this coaching staff. They aren't great coaches and definitely aren't great recruiters. Heupel is familiar with them and comfortable working with them. They aren't the kind of guys who usually help you succeed in this league. Give Saban credit. He's not afraid of hiring the best talent he can find. He's secure in his skin and surrounds himself with only the hardest workers...the best. Kirby is along the same lines. Heupel is really starting to remind me of Fulmer toward the tail end of his career at UT in some regards with his coaching staff. Along those lines, I see some parallels between Fulmer losing a detail oriented, disciplinarian type in Cutcliff just like Heupel lwith Golesh. Yeah, everyone says Heupel is really the OC, but being the head man is tough enough without trying to be the OC, too. What Fulmer missed the most was the discipline and attention to details that Cut brought. Wonder if USF will lead their league in penalties?

One thing is certain, this will be the longest Heupel has been the HC at one place if I'm not mistaken. After this year, this will be HIS roster. That's when the clock is ticking. I'll be curious to see what the program looks like in Nico's year 2. I'll also be keeping an eye on Golesh at USF to see if my comparison to Fulmer/Cutcliff still remains somewhat reasonable. Hope Heupel figures it out and this program takes off, but those similarities with Fulmer has me feeling a little on edge.

I said it before, but he's a physical guy, great blocker and possession type, but we need big play dudes. I'd trade McCoy straight up for Stewart. That's the kind of guy we need in this offense. Matthews and Staley might be one of those and are great athletes, are they more like Bru or are they the type of players who can really stretch/stress a defense like Hyatt? Solid recruiting class, but I don't see the game changers this offense needs.
Matthews is a game changer for sure. We have added 3 frontline receivers and a hoss of a tight end. I would say the we did alright.

Dang.....I'd trade Mizzu (or USCjr) for FSU.
Trade them Vandy maybe, only since IT MIGHT strengthen them in recruiting and hurt UF. I would still prefer to poach UNC from the ACC to clean up our SEC map, improve BB and decent FB that might pick up steam in our league. Vandy fits better with WF, GT, and the rest of the remaining teams after the other leagues poach the big boys. Let FSU go to the Big 10. Just have an unexplained anti FSU tendency probably dating back to them avoiding joining us years ago.

Not sure about the "home grown talent" idea. Things are different now. We're knee-deep in CFB free agency and there's no going back.

Check out the 2023 rosters of UT and Florida State. Coaches who play the transfer game effectively will win.

Squirrel
Thornton
Nimrod
Webb
Leacock
Matthews
Staley
Brazzell
Spillman

Potentially:
Stewart
Bru

Not enough footballs to go around. Good problem to have but who is leaving?

Thornton and Bru I think have only one year left. Nice to be in position we can let guys develop but how long will some wait to play? I really have high hopes for Leacock hope he doesn’t bounce if he doesn’t get much run this year.

I think they tended to avoid the situations that got Joe in trouble. His clear inability to throw receivers open or anticipate them being open likely made the middle of the field less available. Whatever his role in '22, Golesh wasn't key in all the successful offenses Heupel had in the past, and Heupel didn't forget how to coach offense this year. Joe's stats were decent *because* of the game plan, but the overall performance was down because they were planning around his limitations. I bet that'll be obvious by mid season next year.
Agree - good post. If VN posters would go back and look at what they posted when it was happening they would all have to acknowledge it. Stood out like a sore thumb. "Why do they keep throwing the bubble, why do they never throw over the middle, why do they forget the TE's, why not throw to the RBs, why, why?"

The answer was Joe. He did not have good vision, anticipation and timing. He did not throw intermediate routes well because he apparently could not anticipate the holes and windows for the throws. The targeted receiver had to be open first and then he would throw. Throwing guys open was not his thing. Heup and Joey could not fix it for all of the route tree and in-game situations. It is the same problem he had from UM to us.

Some guys cannot "see" a target that is in open air. They need a tangible target like a player. The former is how a guy like Brock Purdy can step in and succeed immediately. He has barely NFL minimum velocity, but his vision, anticipation and timing with the routes is off the charts good.

From what I can tell Nico in his limited action has all of that. He just needs playing time and to build chemistry with receivers. This point is probably why Heup chose to RS him.

Aggies and Longhorns will dominate the SEC recruiting scene for many years to come - no doubt about it. Florida will as well, once they get a coach with a pulse.

Buckle up. This isn’t the old SEC anymore.

Why are some saying get the OLineman from Georgia?..

The guy isn't even in the Port Hole 🤑🤑
People have convinced themselves he will enter the portal after their bowl because of some ambiguous tweet.

Some people look for reasons to get their hopes up so they can then be disappointed.

I love me some Bru.. but I kind of wouldn’t mind him declaring for the draft.

We need some solid representation in the draft. It would be a selling point to recruits to say we’ve had receivers drafted each year they’ve been here - and Bru is the only one with draft potential this year.

And I think we’re fairly loaded at receiver now so we would be fine.

That’s said - he’s a hell of a player and I’d welcome him back excitedly.
Agree. I just think it would possibly be better for Bru's career to come back, get stronger and prove his health and ability. Even a 25-30 catch season could reestablish him as a premier receiver for draft day.

You can play it effectively, but I’m not sure it’s a way to develop long term stability. I still think you have to recruit and develop a decent amount of high school talent. We will see what FSU does going forward, but there will be ups and downs when you mostly rely on transfers.

I agree. That's where "effectively" comes into play. A mix of homegrown and transfer talent will be the key, I believe.

Depth will be an issue from now on. How do you keep talent that isn't starting? I see a lot of parity in the future.
