Recruiting Football Talk VII

The NCAA did a masterful job for decades convincing fans that scholarships were enough value for the players. So much more money is flowing now that it’s criminal if these kids don’t get their earned share. It’s pretty un-American and for some reason people can compartmentalize this specific situation to justify them not being paid. It’s very weird.

I think they need a base salary system for all players at schools that can afford to be part of it. Then if a kid wants to opt out, they can, but will miss out on a portion for not playing.
Yah, and the "no one ever forced them to play" argument doesn't understand free market ethics, law, etc...

No one ever forced people to buy Windows 95 and Microsoft Office, but Microsoft still got broken up.

If the suppliers/hirers are conspiring to set prices or cap salaries, then they are breaking the law. If McDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King, etc, all conspire to set the minimum price of a burger or the maximum dollar per hour, they are going down. But people rationalize an organization of universities that conspire toset the maximum salary for money-making athletes to zero. And it's actually the organized enforcement wing to prevent universities that WANT to pay athletes from doing so.

It's bizarre.

The Supreme Court's recent opinion basically told NCAA, "If your business model relies on setting market salaries of athletes to zero, you're in a world of hurt the next time I see you."

Damn that team was good
They could’ve competed with miami
The BCS got it right. Take out the human equation. Weight SoS more heavily.

There are currently 43 bowl games. Cutting out 13 of those. That means 16 teams, all with winning records, will be able to COMPETE for a chance at a championship.

You can be rewarded with HF if you win your conference. Or some such.

16/8/4/2 - My 4th grader knows that math. Heck, I know that math. She is much smarter than I.

If a school has opt outs, or transfers. Take your airing of grievances to commish, or to NCAA. Much like a roly-poly sooner or later they'll roll over and die.

*Please note I didnt indicate that any decision of significance would be reached.

Yawn. With his main competition being Nebraska, Indiana, and Northwestern.
If that's the white guy, he is SLOW!!!!

If it's not, it's probably the one that was interviewed about UT prep saying that they aren't used to having to play spread teams that make you play in space.

I was thinking yesterday, "These LBs are going to be boat anchors for that defense in this game."

3 Interceptions by Nico means ,lots of prozac prescriptions being handed out on VolNation...
Prozac can take months to start working…

IV Haldol and Valium. Immediately puts them in manageable vegetative state. Plus Valium can keep working for up to 100 hours straight 😳 Propranolol is a beta blocker that works great to control rage and aggression in brain injury patients. I would throw some of that in the mix too.

That’s how I would do it.

Don't lose sight of long term management as well, Doc. lol

December 29, 1986

From 1976-1986........I was fortunate to go to every Liberty Bowl.......This was a fun one!

Joey Clinkscales caught an 18 yard touchdown pass from Jeff Francis to give Tennessee a 7–0 lead. Fullback William Howard caught a 23 yard pass from Francis to make it 14–0. Chip Lohmiller made it 14–3 on his 27 yard field goal. In the second half, Ricky Foggie scored on an 11 yard touchdown run. Fullback Darrell Thompson scored on the conversion attempt to make it 14–11. Lohmiller added another field goal to tie the game at 14 with 13:23 left in the fourth quarter. But the Vols went on a five-play, 66-yard drive that culminated with a Clinkscales catch from 15 yards out to give them a 21–14 lead with 11:21 left that sealed the victory as the Gophers failed to respond from there. Francis went 22 of 31 for 243 yards, and he was named MVP. Clinkscales had seven catches for 72 yards. For the Golden Gophers, Foggie went 10 of 25 for 136 yards.

It was a satisfactory finish, too, for a Tennessee football team that staggered through a 2-5 start this season but rolled up five victories in a row to finish 7-5.

I was there too. Always good to see the Vols win in person.

The next year, I started med school. Thankful for my older sister who would record every televised Volunteer football and send it to me. Only way I could watch. Some weeks, it would be 2 weeks after the game. Without social media, it was actually quite easy to avoid knowing the outcome until I was able to watch the game. 🤠

For anyone that needs it

January 1, 2024: Make this day a new beginning as you leave the past behind and forge ahead in faith that I am for you and with you every step of the way. You are never alone. I am by your side to show you the way and direct your steps, says the Lord. I am your fortress and high tower, your very present help in trouble. Psalm 18:2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

The colleges don't pay them to play a bowl game. The colleges have made billions off of these kids for decades by effectively conspiring to limit pay to zero. The athletes are being paid for NIL. Not for playing.

You can't say, "The kids don't deserve to be paid to play the game!" and then paint them as evil for not playing a game.

The next adaptation needs to be a P2W (Pay to Watch) model. Pay me to watch this drivel. I could get into that lol
I'd take P2W in a heartbeat. Then I could completely do away with any form of bundled cable that forces me to pay for a bunch of **** that I don't want so that I can get ESPN, which I don't want, that carries Tennessee Vols, that I do want.

It's like being the old lady that has to keep eating crazy things because of the fly.

Yep. And the people who say they are going to try to fix it are the same ones creating all the issues.
Yep. And they have used this FSU "issue" to completely bury the real news that: (1) the playoffs have now been corrupted for a second year in a row, (2) Michigan and Bama both deserve probation (at the least) and yet they have been oligarchically-promoted into a rigged-up first-round game, (3) and the corrupt and extreme officiating in our games this year was absolutely undeniable.

As you say, meanwhile, television and social media have manipulated nearly everyone into clamoring for they very people responsible for all of the corruption named above to get more power to "fix" what is really a tertiary issue, at best. I mean, compared to the above, who really gives a F what FSU did? It's peanuts.

Now we'll have to sit through all sorts of lies and propaganda about how Saban is great, when he was advanced crookedly into the playoff by rigged officiating; and the same for Harbaugh, who already has his exit plan, and the corrupt and lying story that it is unfair to punish Michigan after he gone is already ready to roll when the time comes. Meanwhile we have a missing Junior class and won't be allowed to have a full recruiting class until 2028.

I am so disgusted by all of this, and especially what was done to us all year long in broad daylight by the SEC office, that I really would walk away after decades of fandom, if I weren't so excited about watching Nico and the '23s and '24s.

I hope we at least get the Clemson-bowl crooked officiating in a few hours, where they simply intervene to stop our tempo over and over, instead of the Purdue-bowl or Bama or second-half Florida officiating, where they shamelessly and power drunkenly stop at nothing to falsify the game without regard for it being obvious.

So, is that in the contract? Seems like all these students (especially the ones who have graduated and fulfilled the 'student' part they make such a big deal about in 'student' athlete) would be facing massive lawsuits for failing to honor their contract to the university?

NCAA: "They are not employees. They are STUDENT athletes! This is not about money! It's about their STUDENT experience! As soon as they decide that it's not about being a STUDENT anymore, they can't play!"

Student: "I'm not a student anymore. I think I'll stop playing at his level and concentrate on my career."

Everyone in unison: "Those low class suns-a-*****es! How dare they refuse to entertain me!"

Late morning early afternoon fans. Hope everyone had a safe and fun new years. Now let's get to biddness.

Put your predictions in.

I'm Calling UT 27 - Iowa 17
They play Nico conservative. We have a turnover and a tight game in the first half leading to gnashing of teeth early. To eventually pulling away and looking strong.
